C2 - Detected error on startup

I was running C2 overnight like I usually do to find it crashed in the morning (which it actually had been running very smoothly up until now). Now every time I try to re-open it I get the message "Creatures 2 detected an error on startup. Please restart your computer and try again."

Obviously restarting didn't help. What do I do?

Also, how does one backup the world? I thought you just made a copy of the world file but that didn't work.

Thanks!

Do new worlds work? And yeah, copying the world file should work fine, I do it very often. Make sure you're copying the file from your userdir\documents\creatures folder, not the game instalation folder.

New worlds work just fine, as do other established worlds. Just not that one.

The world is most likely corrupted I'm afraid. :(

If you upload it somewhere, I could take a look. No promises, but I've had some success uncorrupting broken worlds and at least getting them to load long enough to save the norns.

Oh, wow! If you really want to take a look at it, I posted it here.

I'm afraid I couldn't save the world, but it might be possible to save your norns. I will need to test the method, though.

If you want me to try, could you upload another file for me? You should have the following:

My Documents\Creatures\Creatures 2\Genetics\0ZEI.gen

It is the genetic information of one of your trapped wolflings. I'll use it to test the method. If it works, I'll send you a list of the other 17 genetic files I'll need to save the entire colony.

Uploaded that genome here.

What is the process for saving it? Like, how do you do what you do, you wizard?

It's a bit of hex editing and frankensteining. :)

I open the World file with a hex editor and find the second instance of this byte string: 80 fa 00 00

That brings me to the beginning of the first norn's code. I then ctrl+F "birthplace" and count 337 bytes to find the endpoint.

That's the first half of the norn, but the world doesn't store their genomes. Those are in the .gen files that you've uploaded.

So the .gen information is added to the end of the data pulled from the world file, and this completes the norn, but some header information still needs to be fixed in order for the game to understand what all this code is.

It's a similar process to how I extract a genome from an exported creature, only it's the reverse.

Thanks for the genome, I'll start working on him in a bit and let you know if the operation succeeds. :)

Dienes, would you download "0ZEI" and see if you can import her?

Out of interest, any idea what caused the world to become corrupted in the first place?

Doesn't look like it could import. But if you know the gen files I can try a genome injector instead.

No clue! I don't have any COBs that crash the system, or any hybrids. I did have EggSitter running, but that's never caused crashes before.

I'm glad. :) I know what it feels like to lose a long-lived population, so I'm always happy to help in any way I can.
