Weirdest Genetic Experiments

Anyone out there with the genetics kit has seen just how simple it is to start tweaking the Norn genome. (I've only ever played C3 and DS, so that's the context I'm speaking from). I'm sure (or at least desperately hopeful) I'm not the only one who has experimented with creating some bizarre, and usually woefully ill-advised, variants on the available genomes.

I want to ask specifically what the weirdest ones people have made are. Preferably the ones which made you stop and say "What was I thinking?"

For me there's a lot of choice, but the one I often think about is this horrifying thing I created. It was a 'Defender Norn' which, if it ever encountered a Grendel, would instantly age up to adulthood, become intensely angry, and instinctively begin hitting the Grendel mercilessly (it also got calmed down by the sight of corpses). If I'd stopped there, it might have been OK... Instead, I also added a feature wherein the Norn would begin to produce Muscle Tissue in response to the threat - what an utterly stupid idea, predicated on a totally false concept about how the engine works (I was a lot younger / even more stupid back then).

But yeah, the result (and I still don't know exactly why this happened) was that the moment it detected a Grendel, it Enlarged to adulthood, then seized up and died. Presumably in a lot of pain.

So that's my weirdest / stupidest example of amateur genetic manipulation (at least the weirdest one I can remember after all this time). Now I wanna hear some others! :)

Lol, a Hulk Norn :D

One weird thing I once tried to do was something I called the Eggttin. I tried to create immortal, infertile ettins and then reprogram their hoarding habit so that they carry creature-eggs to norn-home.
Of course the results were more than mediocre, as a lot of the gadget hoarding is done via scripting and not genetics. Sadly I did not know it back then, making me puzzled and angry that they were so stupid.
I kept tweaking their behavior all the time, hoping to eventually get the results I want, but in fact I made their poor little instincts so messed up that they were constantly confused and unsure what to do.

I tried to make a grendel with limbs that would change at every life stage.

Derp derp.

I was always really interested by the ettin gadget thing. Shame it's largely scripted, there's a lot of basis there for some epic behavioural stuff.

Limbs changing at each life stage sounds like a cool, if freaky, concept! Pity it wasn't meant to be!

Not sure if I should be worried, but I'm starting to get more ideas for experimental Norn designs... :P

My favourite genetic experiments were pretty standard. I made immortal bondi norns that didn't get old. They still died from all the usual stuff though, just not old age. My favourite was a female bondi norn with zebra legs. I think she got sick and died though.

I've been meaning to experiment with the sex drive and who to mate with stuff. Someone did some seriously awesome caos stuff and made it possible for creatures to inter breed. The only problem is that they are not inclined to do so naturally. I spent ages trying to splice some messed up grenorns, grettins and whatever norn-ettins are called, to see if I could get them to breed naturally with each other but I think I gave up after many many failed attempts lol.

I'm not sure if it's possible because I'm pretty sure the three sets of 'who to mate with' genes will cause untold confusion for the poor thing. But it's been a loooong time since I've dabbled with genetics so don't quote me on it lol.

There is the Gay Norn (adoptions), though, so it might not be too confusing?

I can't remember what I tried to make - I was quite fond of 'supernorns', and once I found out about the Yin Yang Norns, I would gengineer many of their improvements into my regular norns.

Basically anything I made before about 2012. [nlaugh] A lot of them were deliberately weird and stupid, though. If I have to pick one, it's probably ripping genomes out of the C2 game folder and injecting them into C3. :P

Limbs changing sprites at every life stage was kind of complicated. You could not just slap in appearance genes for the changed life stage to make it work. According to the handbook it is impossible.
But to be honest: that is not entirely true. Norngirl figured out a way once, more or less by accident. It was something weird, like you needed to have all sprite sets for the metamorphing body parts active at baby stage (sorted ascending by the age you are going to use them) and then have a second gene with the new sprite set kick in at the actual life stage.

Not sure if it was exactly like that, but something along these lines.

I've generally just done vanilla stuff like change colors, I was a bit scared to touch anything else, until recently... Pretty much the only thing I did was make an interesting breed based on civets that changed colors like a rainbow at every life stage, but with males and females being 'shifted' to a different stage in the rainbow at each step (the males started out kind of indigo, and the females magenta or pinkish)... I set the bleed genes in such a way that the colors varied in interesting ways between their spots and their bodies, and I made all the pigment and bleed genes able mutate a lot but not allowed to be cut, so they got all kinds of weird colorations after a few gens and didn't easily lose their color.

Actually there is one I can think of... A while ago when I was experimenting with speech instincts and reactions in Norns to try and make them quieter, I made an interesting breed that gets fear and a small amount of pain from sound/speech, and that don't particularly like to hear even other norns... My idea was a kind of 'Churchmouse Norn'... I was thinking that would make them extra shy, quiet, and reflective, not realizing that almost all speaking is scripted. They were okay in small groups, and still spoke to each other some without any problems, but if a bunch started talking at once or there was too much noise, they would start freaking out thinking there were grendels around... they would start running around frantically saying 'retreat grendel' and 'eem very afraid' which of course made the situation worse for the poor things.

Still, I tend to make boring stuff... Even what I'm doing with CFF is really vanilla-ish, pretty much just trying to fix the broken things in C3/DS genetics and put a bunch of things back that are missing from C3/DS that were in C1/C2... though there are some behavior mods I came up with based on my experiments with speech and social behavior that I have found are pretty nice and seem to make them act smarter...

That's maybe my favourite story so far. The plague of terror that swept through this peaceful, quiet grove of Norns. ...Poor things! Thanks for sharing! :D

I recently had a succesful genetics experiment. The EttinXbreeders!!! Yay! What's different about them? Well they mate with norns and grendels! Naturally! Amaikokonut made a crossbreeding script so that there could be inter-species breeding but of course genetically thats really really really unlikely. Although I did manage it by having an ettin and a norn alone together and spamming Cupids Lyre but it still took ages and a lot of prompting.
I posted the ettins for download. I'm working on norns and grendels too. I'm fairly certain they'll work ok but I haven't tested them out yet. The grendels might be a bit of a problem what with thier hate of norns lol.

Interesting fact, depending on how wimpy the Norns are, even the mean Jungle and Banshee c3/ds Grendel genomes can grow to like them by hitting them and approaching them (approaching norns reduces loneliness and boredom for most grendels, and hitting them also makes them happy... though they don't like it much when Norns fight back or hit them, a smack or two won't make them really dislike the Norn that much... Usually they are still getting more reward out of interacting with the Norn than punishment... unless the Norn is really kicking their butt...)

If they like the Norn more, then would be more likely to push them (though of course they still won't have instincts to push them, so it will still take some prompting even if they do... Still it will be more likely to work if you can get them to like the Norn)

I made flying Draconians with Gargoyle arms (for the wings).
I also made norns that could live solely off fruit, and had instincts to match. I don't think I was using CFE genetics then though.

I tried to make creatures that got more out of their food.

Essentially I wanted to make a breed with micro ettin/grendel sprites which had small needs to match, less food, less space.

So I increased the nutritive value they got out of their food, by a great deal, this more or less seemed to do the trick since taking one bite almost, but not entirely filled their hunger from empty.

Then they all died.
Presumably from obesity-related problems.
I may simply slow down their digestion next time, akin to how bondi norns function, that wasn't really what I was going for.

Possibly increasing their nutritive intake is viable to a certain extent but certainly not that much.

I, aged about ten, used to open up norn export files in Wordpad from C1 and just change something random for something else random. Usually, nothing really happened, but once I swear I had a norn that could destroy objects by looking at them. I mean, she was probably just making the game crash, but in my mind I had created a goddess.
