Can't dock C3 with DS

Hi everyone!!

Like many, I'm reliving (or trying to) the nostalgia of these wonderful games that I spend so many years playing.

I would really appreciate some help getting DS up and running... cause I'm stuck.

It goes like this:

I have a new laptop with windows 8.1, and no CD drive. I downloaded Creatures Exodus through GOG, got it all patched up, patched C3 with the update, fixed the registry key problems I was having, got the offline patch working... and I'm still having problems!! What an ordeal!!

Anyways, now I can open DS, and launch worlds, and C3 works as well, but when I try to open a world in DS docked with the C3 world, it says I have to have the CD ROM in.

Well... that's not happening. It's all on my computer, and I'm CD Drive-less.

I would really appreciate help on this! I'm SO CLOSE!! And after all the troubleshooting I did, now I'm stuck. Bummer.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome back to Creatures! It's always lovely when you want to jump back in and run into problems, isn't it? Ha! Anyways, I have just a couple of questions to try to offer up some more solutions. Others might have better ideas from a technical standpoint, so feel free to wait to see if someone has some other ideas.

- When you say "got it all patched up, patched C3 with the update, fixed the registry key problems I was having..." what do you mean? The only update you should need after installing the GOG.com version of Creatures Exodus is the Creatures Remastered Patch.

- Have you changed the location of the game from InstallBlast.exe to engine.exe? I cover this and a couple of other installation issues over here.

Hopefully some of that will help get you going in the right direction! I'm always happy to help, as are many others in the community!

I did the remastered patch, and then the Creatures 3 Update 2, then the login bypass for offline play.

I just changed the target location.

When I start DS up, it says that C3 is installed, and gives me option of creating a world with it docked. When I go to load the world, it says "you must have your creatures 3 disc in your CD ROM drive to play in a docked world. If you make a world with just the Capillata then you can play it without CD. Please insert your CD and try again".

Thanks for your help. I'm wondering if I need to just start all over again from scratch. Maybe something got messed up somewhere along the way, or maybe I did more than I really needed to?

My guess it that it could be the Creatures 3 Update 2, which isn't needed for the GOG.com version. I've had to do a couple of reinstalls multiple times when I messed things up... And I was a pro at that for awhile. Ha ha! I'm hoping you'll have good news to report back with. If not, we're here to help you solve things!

Ok, I tried it again without the Update 2... and now both of them open, and it says they will dock, but no elevator shows up in the atrium.

Am I lost? I haven't actually played DS before.... but I sure can't figure out how to get to the C3 ship....

Again, thanks for your help. I had to take a few steps back and simplify, but I'm still having trouble! haha. I'm sure it will be worth it when it's all working.

OH OH OH!!! I figured it out!!! It's a teleporter and I was looking for an elevator!! Wow they hid that one pretty well.

Thanks so much!

Yippeee!!! I'm off to play with some delightful critters now :D

Glad you got it working... If you are playing with a docked world, I would also strongly suggest you look into Vampess' DS/C3 fixes, These fixes are all really great, I recommend all of them, but I would especially recommend the 'Umbilical Fix'.

See, the teleporter that connects the capillata to the ark (called the Umbilical) is seen by creatures as a lift by default... and because they cannot tell if the ark is above or below, and because lifts are usually inside of a metaroom, not connectors between metarooms, they are not properly able to navigate through it... This fix lets creatures see it as a metaroom door so they can properly follow smells through it and navigate between the ships.

Without this fix installed, you will see creatures frequently get stuck just on the other side of the teleporter, and they can sit there until they starve, because if they get hungry in the bridge, and can smell the nearest food in the capillata, they will get to the umbilical, but then won't be able to figure out how to follow the scent through it. This fix solves that problem, and your creatures will be bouncing all over your docked world in no time.

^ So that's why that happens! I remember doing a wolfling run a long time ago and noticing that norns would always get stuck and starve in that spot (I called it the Bermuda Triangle), but I never knew why that happens. :o
