I'm looking for a list of all the possible words that can appear in the second part of a creature's moniker for every species.
001-fern-(lines of gibberish)
What I mean is "fern" in that example moniker. Has anyone found an online list of all the words that can appear in the place of that for every species,or if it's not online, where can I find the list in the game files?

It is in some catalogue file. Not sure which, though...

Interesting question! I've actually wondered about this, too, but never bothered to look for it. It appears that you can find it in a catalogue file, for both Creatures 3 and Docking Station. They are located in the following locations:
- C3: Catalogue/Genome.catalogue
- DS: Catalogue/DS Genome.catalogue
Only difference I can see is that the very last line for the World Friendly Name is ship vs. dock, although that kind of makes sense! It has everything split out for each species. I wonder if it's possible to create your own, kind of like how some of the autonamers work... Anyways, hopefully that answers your question and helps!
Just for reference, and to make things easier to see, here are the monikers that I see in my files:

Geats are so simple that it hurts.

They put that lazy one-word "list" in because the game wasn't intended to have Geats, but then Gaius barged in and threw that out the window. At least I can see whether or not an exported creature is a Geat without opening the game and importing it. |

I find it amusing that the list entirely consists of four-letter words.

One could go ahead and see how the game reacts on altered lists. What happens if you use words with more/less letters than 4? How does the game react when you import a creature with a weird moniker, such as "doge" or "kumquat"?

"doge" should be fine. Don't know about "kumquat", someone needs to test that out. |

I think changing the filename won't do much, though. The moniker is probably saved within the creature as well. Someone had to add it to their catalogue, wait for a creature to use it and then either send it to someone without the change or undo the change themselves. Then see if the game freaks out, changes the moniker or simply accepts it as it is.
I guess using geats would be the easiest, as a newly added tag had a 50% chance besides "geat" to be picked.
Also, don't forget that catalogues either need to be refreshed by hand or one has to open a new world to apply changes.

I imagine the four characters thing is necessary as part of memory management and fitting the moniker string into a certain number of bytes, but that's complete guesswork on my part. Someone needs to experiment and see what happens. |

It turns out that if you have entries more than four letters long, the game just truncates them.
Edit: If you try a name shorter than four letters in length, it just repeats the word until it has enough - in my case, "oil" became "oilo".
Edit 2: Numbers also work! |

And what does the game do when a creature uses an "invalid" one?

What do you mean by "invalid"? |

I mean you create a creature with a new moniker word and export it.
Next you remove it from the catalogue, restart your game and make a fresh world.
Import the creature with the now no longer existing moniker word.

I'm not sure what happens in that case. I don't think it would cause any problems, but you can test one of the Norns I uploaded and see if it does. |
