HighGen crashing C3/DS

I put a comment on the download itself, but I wanted to post here as well.

I'm interested in trying out the HighGen .cos file from Amaikokonut. I put it in my DS Bootstrap folder and started a new docked world since I had previously crashed both standalone C3 and DS world versions trying it out :)

Unfortunately, I still get a big, ugly error message when trying to run a new world with the .cos file and then I have to manually kill Creatures - I have also tried calling the .cos file on an existing world using CAOS and get the same result. I feel like I might be doing something wrong or maybe the .cos file doesn't work with the C3/DS from GOG.com for some reason. I have found C3/DS to be refreshingly low on bugs and horrible crashes compared to C2, so I'm a bit surprised. I have also successfully placed other .cos files in Bootstrap and created a world with them already in the folder or manually injected them via CAOS so I have at least some grasp of how to go about this.

Has anyone been able to get it to work and if so, what am I missing?

It would help if we actually knew what the big, ugly error message said. Can you take a screenshot of it and post it here, please? Welcome to the forums, by the way. :)

If you don't mind awful grammar, here is an article I wrote on the subject of error messages.
You already covered a lot of the things mentioned in the article, such as the object glitching, but as Laura pointed out, the "big ugly error" would be interesting at this point.

Thank you both :)

Not sure yet how to upload the screenshot, I haven't actually joined or used any forums in years, so here is a faithful hand-typed reproduction that came in an alert window labeled "CosIntaller::ShowError":

.Bootstrap10 Docking Stationzzz_gamestart_login - BACKUP.cos
Invalid TARG ... 1 rgam rtar 2 2 26 {@}cmrt 0 new: comp 1 2 206 "conn ...

Windows NT/2000 6.1 build 7601 (Service Pack 1)
OriginalDisplay DirectX (netbabel 148 )

I tried it again in a docked world once without the HighGen .cos file and once with - I was able to start a new world without HighGen in the Bootstrap folder no problem. What baffles me is it references a different .cos file when it crashes. As I look at it, I think that was the original .cos file for the game - I manually edited zzz_gamestart_login.cos using some code from the Creatures Wiki to play DS offline. That BACKUP file I made seems to be ignored though, except when I also have HighGen in there.

You should not keep backups of cosfiles in the bootstrap folder itsefl. The game has no list or anything of which files to load and which not. It simply loads all files which are within the right folder. That means even if you add a file which is called... IDK, PeanutButterAndJelly.cos, it would load that one as well.
So my guess is that the problems arise from the regular and the edited cosfiles both being present at once, creating vital parts of the ship twice, but with slightly altered scripts.

Also, posting images is easy. You click "gallery" in the top bar and then go on "post". Then you are presented with a form which should be self-explanatory.

Thanks, Papriko! I will take out the extra file and report back [nsmile]

EDIT: I took out the backup and I get the very same error but from the original zzz_gamestart_login.cos instead.

That's weird... Also, I wonder what that classifier refers to...

Rather annoying that it has no line numbers, but this appears to be the area of failure:

rgam
** Move to Docking Station Hub
rtar 2 2 26
cmrt 0
** Create Connect GUI
new: comp 1 2 206 "connect gui" 0 0 9000
attr 304
*** ask for the user id...

I think the rtar identifier has something to do with a popup box from what I was reading about CAOS, so I started a new world, manually got rid of all the popups first, and then I was able to use ject to run the script. I don't know if I was right or not but I got it working - weird :)

Not sure how that helped. According to the classifier list, 2 2 # is some kind of door. It seems to center the camera at the door.

Anyways, when it works now, that's good.

Looks like I read the classifer 2 from the 1 list by mistake, oops :) Thanks again, not sure what happened but I'll take it :D
