The game claims it cannot find its registry. What should I do? It is installed in a folder on my desktop. I cannot use the program files folder.
Exact error: Creatures could not locate its Main Directory from the registry. The registry may be corrupt. Using current directory instead.
Then
Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT.
Also, I am using the Deluxe Edition on win7\32bit. Running in compatibility mode for Win 98

I don't think you can install it on your desktop. Why can't you use the program files folder?
Also, I highly recommend you purchase the GOG version of Creatures: The Albian Years, which also contains Creatures 2; it has been remastered to run on newer operating systems. |

My program files folder is picky. It requires the hassle of admin approval, and only sometimes lets me do things. I try to install in C or desktop to avoid that. Would it be possible to install it somewhere else, without these issues?

Generally if you right click on stuff and tick the "run as administrator" option under "compatibility", it should remember that and work fine from the program files folder. |

Still, I don't like Program Files. It is my nemesis. Again, if it can work on the desktop, or other non-Program Files alternatives, I would very much appreciate knowing.

I think you might have to open your machine.cfg and edit it to match the new directories. I don't think that's related to the registry but it couldn't hurt to fix it now. If nothing else, you'll be nipping future problems in the bud too.

Creatures 2 doesn't have a Machine.cfg as far as I know, Kezune. |

I can't find the Machine.cfg. Are there other configuration files I should try to find, though?

Oh, whoops. I was thinking Docking Station for some reason. Disregard my advice.

I'm going to try moving it to C . Will report results soon.

No success. Maybe the number of folders is confusing it? It is at C users\{insert name}\desktop\New folder\New folders
Maybe renaming things will help...

No, manually moving the folder won't work, as everything will still be pointing towards where it was originally. Also, don't install the original Creatures 2 game in your documents; you only need to do that for the Creatures: Albian Years version. The only thing I can recommend is reinstalling it to your C Program Files folder. |

Hmm. Is only C2 incompatible with the desktop? I plan on getting C1 soon, does it work outside of Program Files? Or C3?
Does the GOG version work outside of Program Files?
Does a patch for things like this exist? Would editing registries actually fix this?

I just thought of something. I am going to try moving it to a folder within program files.

Let us know how it works. By the way, you can edit your posts instead of posting twice in a row when you have more information.
Also, as far as I know, the GOG versions work outside of Program Files. I have all of the games installed to My Documents/Creatures. While you're at it, you should also try using the Remastered Patch. See if that makes a difference.

Moving it to a folder within program files didn't work, nor did my documents. Seems like GOG version will work better, so I think I will get the GOG version and patch. IN the meantime, I will keep regular C2 in case I figure something out.

GOG c1 and c2 have exact same error in documents, my documents and desktop. Haven't installed the patch yet, maybe it will help.

Just installed Exodus from GOG. Has Docking Station in there too. Should I make edits to the machine.cfg?

As long as it installs properly no. You should only need to edit the machine.cfg if you move any of the folders listed in the machine.cfg.

I got it to almost work. Editing machine.cfg yielded results. I set main directory to 'C:" and it stopped complaining about directories. It still gives an error, which I assume is more common. Something along the lines of "Please switch to high colour (16 bit)" I'm going to look around the forums for this one.

You should be able to edit it in your display settings. Naturing::Nurturing also has an automatic color mode switch option that might be worth investigating. Good luck!

Colour works fine, just had to turn on fullscreen. DS works great, hoping to find a way to change directory for other games. If possible.

Since DS is working fine, would it be possible to dock C3 whilst it isn't in Program Files? If not, are there files equivalent to machine.cfg that I could edit in other games to change directory?
Don't die thread... Don't die on me!

I wonder if I could manually merge C3 and DS, thus gaining access to both games. Copy and pasting it into DS folder would be the easiest way, but I don't think it would work all that well.

I doubt that would work out.C3 works differently from DS,and it's altered to be compatible with DS in a docked world. You're still free to check out the absolute insanity you would probably get if you actually did that, though. |

I don't want to risk my game, so I think I will do some tests. My idea is to import Grendels into default DS. I know where to download Grendel egg agents, and the game will kindly tell me what sound files I will need.

Worked great. Copy and pasting sound files from C3 into DS worked very well. DS has also apparently has Grendel dialogue, so no need to import that. Muco layed a Female Grendel named Import. First C3 Grendel in default DS (afaik). Not without bugs, though. Muco got stuck on Grendel, and she is constantly complaining about homesickness. I assume Grendel Home isn't specified in default DS. I want to import a C3 COB as well, not sure how that will go. Importing C3 rooms will be difficult, if possible at all.

If you skim through downloads, you'll find metarooms that you can inject. Anyway, this has gotten a bit off topic. If you figure out how to get that to work, you could write a tutorial for it in the resources section. Good luck!
