Hello everyone!
I've just finished my university year so I decided to play Creatures again. However, my game was completely messed up due to some agents so I decided to delete it and install it again. I didn't think there'd be any problem with that since the game worked pretty well on Windows 8.1 and I was able to install it on Windows 8 about two years ago.
Of course, it's no working, I can't install it. I've tried compability mode and running it as an administrator, nothing works.
So I thought: "I could get the GoG version, my CD is a bit old and I do have a bit of money right now."
So question: I know that the GoG version will work on W8.1, but does the setup work?
Thanks everyone!

I have Windows 8.1, and I can assure you that it works
You just might have a little problem with Docking Station, if it says to change your system to "16 bits", go to the game folder, and in user.cfg, change "fullscreen = 0" to "fullscreen = 1", and it should work. If it still says the same thing, go to your shortcut to the game, go to "Properties" and in the "Compatibility" tab, check "Reduced color mode" and select "16-bit color", and then you should be good to go
If it still doesn't work please tell.

I'm using Windows 8.1 too.
It works just fine, but like ghost_norn said remember to set colours to 16-bit for DS under compatibility settings.
I didn't need to set it to work in full screen - I play in a window, but the thing is you can not swap between window and full screen, its one or the other for a play session or everything turns pink.
If you are having trouble with the installation make sure that you uninstall it and then open regedit.exe to delete all the registry settings for creatures (use the search function, there are approximately eleventy-billion hidden away in various places).
Once you do that you should be able install it ok.
GOOD LUCK.

It works, I didn't need to change anything. :-) The official breeds were a bit tricky to install, but it's fine as well. I'm now adding agents, it works so well I can't believe it. And I thought my old CD would always be better. :-p

I had to change over to the GOG version some time ago (Creatures Trilogy edition of C2 wouldn't install on Vista). Glad to hear it worked!
Setting it to high color via the compatibility options worked just fine for me. I wish the options included more resolutions though, because my new computer's native resolution is crazy (1900xsomething). While the scaling thingy in 8.1 is nice for most things, it makes older stuff that isn't made to work with it blurry. So my options for Creatures (C3/DS at least, haven't tried the others yet) are either awkwardly small, the right size but blurred, or fullscreen which is stretched horizontally. (Setting it to "Run in 640x480" cuts most of it off.) That's why I haven't been playing for a few months...
Edit: So I saw something in another thread about just running it in windowed and hitting maximize, right? I opened the game up thinking I'd try that... And for some reason it's already got the size right, with scaling off. I have no idea why it's suddenly working, other than I had to reinstall it because I accidentally uninstalled it earlier on. (Not a long story, but a dumb one.)
Guess I have no excuse not to put my CC back in and give it a go! |
