Creatures 3 Genetics Kit Issues

I've always had issues with my C3/DS Genetics Kit, although I've made do with it for quite some time. However, I figure it's a good idea to see if anyone has some ideas for how to fix these errors. It's making some genetic work pretty difficult. I have a few thoughts on what could be the cause, but I don't want to jump in and just guess. Thanks for any help with the following issues!

1. When I try opening up the genomes of hatched Creatures in C3/DS, I sometimes get this message:

File exceeds maximum length for genome (60000 bytes)
Operation aborted

You may try getting a more up to date Genetics Kit from http://www.creaturelabs.com

2. I know this issue is associated with problematic .gno files, but I actually get this a lot more than I thought I would:

Failed to load captions correctly.
Description: Error ID 63 (Bad record number)

3. Finally, this is a very specific issue I just came across. When loading the genome of the Dragonfly Demon Ettin, I get this error (options are to press Yes or No):

ERROR. Corrupted genome. Expected 'gene', found '"

I'm running Windows 7, with C3/DS installed to My Documents. The Genetics Kit runs from Program Files, so I have a feeling moving it to My Documents might be helpful... I just figured I would see if there are other ideas first before I create some mayhem. Ha!

The first error is just as it says: the genome is just too big. Since most if the time this error happens when one tries to read a genome from a DS in-game creature, you can try to work around it by extracting the genome from a .creature file and using that, but it doesn't always work. Ultimately, the best option is to open the genome with another genetics editor (e.g. GeneLab).

The second error means "I couldn't find a .gno file for this genome." The genome will load just fine if it pops up, although the captions will allow be "no caption." Fixing this is as simple as copying a .gno file from another genome and renaming it so it matches the genome without a .gno file.

The last one I've only seen with Trix's ettin breeds, and I'm certain it's a problem with the genomes and not with the Genetics Kit (other genome editors will spazz out upon loading them as well).

At any rate, none of these can be fixed by reinstalling the genetics kit to the Documents folder; they're not Exodus-specific and you might break its ability to load normal genomes if you try.

Thanks, Grendel Man! I didn't know about the .gno file trick, which should come in handy. I should have some time to take a look at some genetics this week and get some things working. Thanks again for the help!
