I finally get everything working, made a C3-DS docked world, ready to try my first Norns. Windows 7 forced an update overnight, and now it will not allow me to switch to 16bit color so I can play DS. It switches it back to 32.
One more instance of Windows thinking it knows better. grrrr.
Anyone else have this issue or know a workaround?
I am researching further and also waiting to hear from my fave computer techie, will post if I find any fix.

How have you been switching color depth before? I know windows 7 has a pretty obscure way to get to it through monitor properties, but if that's not working, there are a few programs that will switch the display's color depth for you... if you have something like that and it's still switching it back, then I'd say the most likely thing is there was a driver update for your graphics or display that keeps telling it to switch back. Finding out which driver was changed in the update and installing the old driver should fix it if that's the case.
I have windows 7 myself (64-bit), and the method I use is just an executable that I put in my creatures ds folder, and a batch file that I used to call the program and then start up ds. The program I use is called 'nircmd', it's a free open source command line utility that should be easy enough to find if you search, it lets you do all sorts of stuff, but i just use it to change my display colors. If you get stuck anywhere setting it up or making the batch file to start up creatures with any command-line programs like this, I'd be happy to assist.

Thank you Evol. I may have to call on you if I try that method. I am so weary of tweaking my computer for the last five days, I just want to play the game. For now I found that going through monitor properties but not closing the window is letting 16bit stay. I need to keep my current graphics driver because I also play Second Life which gets unhappy if I don't have the latest driver installed. |

i believe amaikokonut has a tutori for a batch file that will switch to 16-bit automatically. maybe that will work? |

I have Windows 8.1 ( but this worked back when I had 7 if I'm not wrong) and my pc is 64-bit, and what I did was to right click the shortcut of DS in my desktop, then go to Properties, go to Compatibility tab, and then check "Reduced color mode" and in the drop down menu select 16-bit, and also check "Run as Administrator", and voilá, I play in window mode - I changed it on the game's directory, the file user.cfg, I opened it with notepad and changed "Fullscreen 1" to "Fullscreen 0"

Solved my initial problem, it was operator error. I've been feeling kinda foggyhead the last couple days and in that fog I was not clicking apply on the last of the windows for switching color settings. So of course it didn't take.
But in the meantime I learned some very useful info, so its all good.
