In DS, I had (the world's deleted now) four CFE Desert Ettins that appeared to not be capable of seeing gadgets. Whenever they mentioned doing something involving a gadget and one or more were nearby, my Ettins just walked back and forth. They could apparently smell gadgets. No green arrows appeared when a selected Ettin wanted to interact with a gadget, either. My Norms and Grendels saw gadgets just fine, though.

Where were they in the world? I believe there's some trickery in the ettin terrarium to make their stashes invisible and unsmelly.

This is true. Areas classified as "Ettin Home" (instead of indoor corridor, normal soil, saltwater, etc.) have a special feature where Ettins there cannot see gadgets.
In C3/DS the only "Ettin Home" type area is the main corridor of the Ettin Desert terrarium, where the big door, volcano controls, and seed bank are... so that's the only area where you should see this effect, unless you've done any tinkering or something you've downloaded have changed the room type of other areas.

Well, the Ettins couldn't see gadgets anywhere. In case it means anything, I was using the following agents in the world:
The Hydroponics Bay
The Nursery
The Infirmary
Bridge Atrium
Air Purifier
Gaia
Death Update (the one that comes with the Yautja Norns)
Jungle Grass
Crunchy Beetle
Sacred Dragon Skull
Everything from the Vampyre Grendel Pack
Also, the Ettins were hatched from an egg agent.

Funky. Did this happen with all of your CFE Ettins (if you had any others)? If those four came from the regular CFE Ettin egg agent I doubt it was some kind of brain mutation, so the room type would seem to be the most likely culprit. Still really weird, though.
If this problem happens again in any of your other worlds, you could download Moe's Room Changer. It will let you see what the room type is for different parts of the ship, so you'd know for sure if the room type had become Ettin Home.

It turns out that my problem with Ettins isn't a constant one, although it's annoying. Also, no areas appear to have become Ettin Home according to Moe's Room Changer.
