So i downloaded the creatures 3 exodus from amazon yesterday and I have to say im pretty confused!
I have looked everywhere for a beginners guide for this game but just can't find one but I did come across this site when I was looking.
Can anyone offer me any basic tips?! especially on how to stop the grendells killing them! |

There are several upgrades in the game (those little boxes with the green button) which should help you already. First of all, the best is when you choose an adult pair of Norns. Those already know their words and all.
Drag them along by right clicking them and tell those to "push tool". When they do, the upgrade should activate and explode in a burst of stars, additionally giving you a pop-up what exactly has been done.
One upgrade, not sure where but I think in the upper floor of the jungle, lets you select grendels and ettins. The upgrade in the marine terrarium (the watery one) lets you pick up creatures instead of holding hands, when you hold shift and right click.
That should solve a bunch of the initial problems.
Creatures also can be thrown into the piranha pool, which is an instant kill. There is a big button to the right of it which opens the drawbridge. Just make sure your norns do not fall in as well.

First of all, welcome to the world of Creatures! You said you got your version of Exodus from Amazon. Note that there are a good deal of compatibility issues with newer Windows versions. I would recommend looking into the GOG.com versions if you run into any problems with running the program.
Anyways, it really is a rather complex game to get started with. Your download may have included a PDF manual, which I believe offers some beginning tips. I have a few YouTube videos showing how to take care of a newborn Norn, but they're geared towards Creatures 1.
You might want to take a look at my list of Essential Agents and Additions for Creatures DS. You can avoid Grendels completely if you just run Docking Station, which might be a good place to get started! If you would like to get rid of the Grendels in Creatures 3, you can simply stop the eggs from being laid with the Grettin Switch. The official site's navigation is broken, but you should be able to right-click and save as from this page. It's called grettin_switch.agents.
A lot of the fun of Creatures is discovering how to do different things, but it can also be frustrating! If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask! Hopefully this at least helps you get started. Good luck!

Thank you! this is very helpful! I remembered playing a childs version about 15 years ago and nostalgia made me give this ago.
I wasnt even aware the docking station was there! but after looking it is, what actually is it, is it an online version are something? I think il give it ago, would be nice to get more then an hour in without them all being killed grendels.
The version i bought from amazon said it was for windows 7 which is what i have and was released in 2013 i think? unless i got it wrong. it seems to run fine on my laptop anyway.
Thank you for the links il have a read now |

Glad this helped! Docking Station is an add-on to Creatures 3. One of its main purposes was to allow for online play, but new user registrations and the server have been basically dead for years. You'll need the DS Offline Option in order to enjoy DS nowadays, though its still great!
I see the version you got on Amazon. GOG.com usually has much better prices, and their downloads are often updated to add more compatibility. I see a few complaints that the digital download for The Albian Years on Amazon has a version of Creatures 2 that doesn't work in Windows 7. GOG.com also offers sales fairly regularly. I think I got my game bundles for around $3-$4 each.
Again, hope this helps get you started without too much frustration!

Ah - have you 'checked for updates'? This tends to break the game. this thread here explains it in depth, but you want to uninstall, and then reinstall, ignoring all the updates.

You need an add-on that allows you to use the software offline - there are a few around. There's an explanation and a download at AmberCreatures. There's also the Essential C3/DS add-ons thread here at CC, which has a lot of good info.
Hang in there; it's a heck of a learning curve when you start with it, but it's worth it in the long run. |

On the CreaturesDockingStation.com page, you can see a 'Playing DS Offline' heading - that will explain how to install a button that lets you play DS without needing a username or password.
