Issue with DS color depth

So I've reinstalled DS and the first I get is an issue where DS doesn't detect that I have my desktop set to 16 bit color for it so I can run it windowed. I would just settle for full screen if it wasn't so slow compared to windowed. Now best solution I've found so far is to use the QRes method by Amai but that requires I run in full screen first in order to have windowed mode and exit out of the game in full screen otherwise it won't run. Does anyone have any suggestions or is this the best I'll get? I'm on a 64-bit Windows 7 if that helps.

if you go into compatibility modes in your c3 or ds icon on your desktop you can set it to run just that program in 16bit mode

You can? I don't know how I didn't find that yet...

On Windows 7, you should also be able to get to it this way:

* open Control Panel, select Display
* "Change my display settings" (it's in the sidebar, at least on the comptuer I'm currently using)
* Advanced settings...
* It's on the Monitor tab.

That's a lot less convenient than in previous versions of windows, though, so i'd try Sothar's method first.
