After reading a few pessimistic posts on the Creatures Online forums, I am starting to get fed up with people moaning about how the game because it has become more kid-friendly and the Norns don't have tails (seriously, that's one of the things that people are moaning about!).

Let's face it, the Creatures series has never been as popular as say, Nintendogs was in 2006, mainly due to the fact that the series wasn't exactly created with any particular audience in mind. However, Creatures Online could change that by making them game seem more appealing, and therefore, more people are likely to buy it. This in turn will help attract more people towards the community, who will then go on to discover the other games in the series.

Although Creatures Online may have its bad points, such as being more casual than the previous games were, I still feel that it will be a pretty good game. Fishing Cactus have worked very hard on this game; until Creatures Online was announced everyone would probably have admitted that the series was pretty much forgotten about, and it came as a big surprise to everyone when it was finally announced.

Overall, I think Fishing Cactus have done a good job so far with Creature Online. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I guess that's the way the cookie (Ettin) crumbles.

Does anyone else have anything to say about their views on the game?

I appreciate the hard work that Fishing Cactus has been doing; in no way will I write off the entire game because there's a few things I might not like. There's some things I feel that could be improved upon, but the other Creatures games had flaws too, as nothing is perfect. It doesn't mean that it can't still be enjoyable, though!

I hope that a lot of people enjoy the game, maybe it will teach a lot to the younger audience, too!

I don't see why the logic of "they'll make it popular with kids and then we'll get an influx of noobs" is seen as a good thing. Given that CO looks to be aimed at the under 13s, if you're correct and they coming flooding in here, what do you think that's going to do to the signal to noise ratio?

With each version of Creatures, it's become increasingly dumbed-down to appeal to a wider (and younger) audience. CO is true to type here. It may be a very good example of its type - free-to-play, micropayment encouraged - but won't require a great deal in the way of thought or engagement. For those who want thought or engagement, at least they'll have access to the older versions on GOG.

I have to agree on almost everything in these 3 posts, personaly I don't understand , what people have against the new design of norns, because a series of games always demands a change of design. Let's take as another example The Sims, a well known simulation game. And now imagine the 2D View style would remain in every single game of them, even in Sims 3 and now Sims4 ? What would this achieve? People would guess, that there isn't a developement and wouldn't buy the game. Just because the new norns don't have tails, it doesn't mean that this game can't be good. ( And from 2D to 3D.)

About the kid friendly and aiming for 13 year olds, I have to add, that to develope a game nowadays needs a huge amount of money and time. The new game trends are apps for the cellphone or games on facebook, which offers a great possiblity to earn a lot of money, don't get me wrong, of course the aim of Creatures online isn't to just earn money, but everyone needs in times like this money. In our material society it is hard to survive without any form of cash, but in order to suceed and to become a popular entertaining game, you need advertisment in order to reach people.
However I fear that the amount of true creatures fans wouldn't be sufficient enough to cover the expenses of a freetoplay game. Therefore, just out of economical interest you have to seek for a high amount of people to play games.
In order to become popular, the creature game series has to try something unconventional. On the one hand I agree on your opinion , because of course it brings it's own disadvantages to become so popular for 13 year olds, on the other hand I think you also have to understand the game companies.

I have to ask, why is it so many people think the game is being aimed at younger audiences?

Firstly, myself and many other people here picked up one of the original games as children. The fact I'm still playing it 10 years later is testament to the amount of depth in the games, not because the games were targeted at adults.

Fishing Cactus has repeatedly confirmed they're not dumbing down any of the genetics, kits or anything else. There may be changes that make these things easier to access, but I don't think they're any dumber for it (hopefully I'll still think this come release).

Honestly, the only reason I see people spouting is this nonsense about the games being more vibrant and colourful, therefore it's for kids. Have we really been so completely sucked in by the brown noise that is Modern Warfare that we think all 'adult' games (coz Call of Duty is soooooo an adult game!) need to be desaturated muck?

Seriously, go watch Pixar's 'Up'. One of the most colourful movies I've seen and I don't care what anyone says, that is totally not a kids movie.

Their are a few reasons why some people think it's aimed at young children. For one thing, the visual style does look a lot like children cartoons.

The new norn design on the other hand, makes them look more like clever monkeys whom by all means shouldn't need any help staying alive. Not to mention, none of the creatures we've seen so far looked in any way ugly or threatening. Might be perfectly safe previews for 3 year old Suzy, but since we're not getting grendels(as far as i know for the release version), to (some) older fans it can seem as if there's no opposition or challenge to keeping your norns alive at all. Toddler friendly games that play themselves are so boring even the target age group can't be kept interested, and the thought of the creatures series turning into toddler fodder scares some people. (even though we already have creatures village/playground for that. I could never figure out the point of those games...)

The key to understand people's opposition is to understand their fears and putting yourself in their shoes. Yes, it would be horribly disappointing if C.O. turned out to be exactly like that, but the developers have told us many times it won't, so we should at least give them the benefit of the doubt and trust them a minimum with THEIR game.

While i hate micro-transactions and find them to be a repulsive money siphoning gimmick in most cases; it makes sense to use them for C.O., and might actually give us all a chance to get everything we hoped to see from the game, given enough time and a few dollars to throw their way.

I'm still rooting for norn tails(they're adorable, deal with it), ettins/grendels and c1/c2 looking norns -in the future-, but i won't complain about the game not having them on release day. We've already been told and shown it wouldn't be part of the original release, but FC have already said that things like ettins and grendels were on their list of possibilities for future add-on options. Just because we don't start off with something doesn't mean we'll never get it, so we should reserve judgment until after we actually play the game.

I think it's amazing how much fishing cactus has been listening to the fans; and if past behavior is promise of future behavior, it's not at all unreasonable to think we're going to see "everything the game is missing" as extra downloadable content somewhere down the line. Who knows, we may even be privileged enough to be polled for and given exactly what we want.

It all comes down to: Sometimes we just have to trust the developers.

EDIT: Sorry for the length. @-@;

I appreciate that FC listens to the fans, and I like the art (even most of the new Norns), but I'm a little short on optimism. The talk about it being a browser game totally soured it for me- that plus the microtransactions has me very concerned that it'll ultimately be just another Facebook-style coin grinder game. I know publishing it as a regular game would be too much financial risk but... bluh.

The "childish" factor doesn't bother me (I love Disney and Pixar, I play Viva Pinata- I'm not ashamed to like bright kiddy things) I'm more worried about whether they can deliver non-dumbed-down gameplay in the format they've chosen.

I guess I'll try and reserve judgement until the game is actually out (even though I won't be able to play it myself; slow, unstable internet + small monthly cap I have to share = I generally can't play always-online games or large browser-based ones.)

Andrea Di Stefano reckons that a large chunk of the demographic for free-to-play games is 'women aged in their 20s, 30s and 40s', so it won't necessarily be 'kiddy' - but making sure the graphics are appealing and varied has been a key new feature of Creatures Online. :)

I guess I should note I'm pretty biased against the F2P+microtransactions format and single-player games with always-online requirements* in the first place. So it's hard for me to see past that.

* edit: I mean, when the format doesn't actually require it (I don't hate browser games in and of themselves, it's really the microtransactions thing that sets off alarms). I'm not sure if CO being a browser game was confirmed or just rumor?

I am willing to try the game and give it a chance. But my hopes are not high.

The graphics looks... cheap or unfinished, of course that could just be the pre-look before they add the finish touch. Or perhaps because I am so used to a different kind of graphic from the games I play, but I still think they look cheap/unfinished.

I did not know it was going to be a browser game and that worries me in how its going to work. Will it be a coin grinding game like InsanityPrelude mentioned or how is that going to work.
Also if its browser game that means we can only play it with an internet connection, which means no net no play.

Also will the community be able to make stuff for CO? Agent, metarooms, etc or has the company closed that down? In my opinion the community is what made the game more fun and interesting, if they close that, then yeah =/

And are the metarooms locked for a specific age in the norn? I think I read somewhere that some metarooms would be off till they reached a certain age, but that was a long time ago and I am not sure. But my worries is if they do lock them for whatever reason.

My BIGGEST worry is if there is going to be a creature population limit. I would not like being restricted to only having 7 (or whatever limit) norns and that is it. I would like to choose that myself. Beside all the other stuff I mention above, this is my biggest worry. I do not want a population limit.

I will still give the game a go of course, and I do hope its going to be a good and fun game.

Perhaps we should dub it 'Creatures Mobile' and move on. That would be a more apt and less misleading name, from the sound of things. [nlaugh] If people regarded Creatures Online as just a posh mobile game, instead of a massive, intergalactic PC game, then I'm sure there'd be more happiness in the community right now.

When I first found out about it, I heard of it as 'Creatures 4', and got super-excited, thinking it would be a new updated version of Creatures for modern PCs, long awaited after almost 15 years... but yeah, it's definitely not going to be that from the looks of things... Still, it seems like it won't be bad, at least for a mobile game... Actually, it looks like it will be pretty groundbreaking, and include a lot of cool stuff you don't commonly see, including a lot of the stuff from the original PC games you definitely wouldn't expect from a mobile game.

I only learned about this like, a month ago. I'm very excited but also cautiously optimistic considering how many times it's been pushed back.

I'm not the biggest fan of the metarooms or whatever I've seen so far just because they seem so much more cartoonish and cheery than what we've seen so far from the series. I really liked the darker and more realistic look.

Is it true that eggs will not be able to hatch on their own? Not a big fan of that idea but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

The only other thing I've heard that I'm eh about is that apparently grendels and ettins will not be involved?

Considering the amazing programmers we have in the community, I'm sure fixes for all of these things could be made so I'm not overly concerned.

I dunno, I always thought C2 was very bright and cheery in places (though admittedly not cartoonish.)

Assuming they're able to develop fixes - I believe the ability to create any kind of add-on is one of the major concerns many people here have.

A while ago, FC said that wolfling runs would still be possible, but I don't know if that's still the case. Grendels and ettins aren't included, although there is a grendel jack-in-the-box agent available in the shop.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Creatures Online will be open to modding, despite the participation in Computer Science Education Week with Algo-Bot:

Jessica wrote:
I was rather surprised by a quote from the developers that was posted on the Creatures Online Facebook page in regards to third-party development:
"Despite the free-to-play nature of #Creatures and the obvious implications of that on the "opening the game" to the community, we would love in the future to get around to having some form of support of user-created content. We've always been straightforward about the fact that when the game is released we will hear the community about the direction it wants the game to go to. All options are open really (for instance we've thought about the "team fortress" kind of moderated user generated content) but ultimately the evolution will likely follow the will of the community. It's hard for us to bet on support for modding that will maybe only interest 1% of the players considering we don't have the resource to be as big as, say, Little Big Planet. We'll gladly do it though if we see there's an overwhelming number of players that want it"
I understand what they're saying, but the fact that they said that modding might only interest 1% of the players seems like a really low number. Guess they're thinking their main audience is new players who won't want to mod, or very young users who wouldn't be able to mod? Just thought that percentage stood out. Guess we'll see what happens, but they might be in for a surprise since many people have been asking for third-party content support since the beginning!

Lack of modding is one of the main reasons I'm not to excited for CO. I hope it's a good game, and I can see myself breeding neat colored Norns. I just feel like it'll be like Petz. I'll play it ever so often, but it doesn't hold my attention for long. The Norns are even starting to grow on me, though two or three of the breeds still look terrible.

Did we ever see what the genetics kit was like? That's the real deal breaker for me. If the in-game genetics kit is really limited, then I'll be really disappointed. I like having the option of creating killer Norns, even if I never do.

I really hope it isn't. Splicers are fun to play around with, but they aren't a good substitute for a real genetics kit. I wouldn't even mind a simpler in-game genetics kit, just as long as I can edit more then their appearance genes.
