What does this mean?

I'm using CJ's Creatures Genome Editor to edit C2 genomes. When editing the header of a gene, there are four options for sex: none, male, female and both. What does both mean, and how does it differ from none?

I covered a little of this information in one of my genetics lessons. I'm not entirely sure about the option for "none" as I've never seen this in a program. Presumably this would make the gene have no effect.

Assigning a gene to both genders means that it will be applied to all Creatures. The ability to choose male/female allows you to set genes that only affect one gender. Seems like you know this, though!

I also notice that there is an option for "all" under sex dependence, so I'm a little confused about the options, too. The only ones I've ever seen work are both, male, or female.
