So, I edited a genetics file from a creature in one of my worlds to nuke most of it's instincts so I could play with instinctless norns, and I can't seem to inject the creature with dev-thing.
"Gene file not found or attempt to load into invalid slot [{@}gene load pntr 1 "norn.noinstinct.gen" ... "
I have no idea what could be causing this, but there's a few things i've noticed:
1. Gens exported from worlds, when exported and renamed, inject perfectly fine
2. Gens injected like "norn.chichi.cfe.gen" inject perfectly fine, without this error.
What's going on with my genetic's folder?
Edit:
The genetic file i'm looking for isn't in my folder, but I know I saved it there, it seems to be ghosted? This would explain things, but how do I unghost it and get the genetics kit to stop ghosting it automatically? It's there, and devthing sees it, but it's hidden for whatever reason. |

Have you put it in the right place?

Yeah, it's there, and both the genetics kit and devthing see it. It's just hidden for some reason from -me- and the game, and does so automatically.
I have the same problem with the sprite editor - all files it exports are there, but hidden, and only accessible via that program. |

I'm using windows 7. Could that have something to do with it?
Edit: I've tried examing the 'properties' of the file and there seems to be no reason for this there; it's not hidden officially, according to the computer. I've checke and unchecked this with no luck. Most security permissions are allowed except for 'special functions' or something similar to that. When I try to move it to the desktop the computer can't find the file to do so. |

Okay, I dug a little further into it, and i'd looked under the 'details' tab in properties, and the attributes of all the invisible files say 'AI'. I fixed this, but it still doesn't inject.
The genetics kit can load the file now that it was fixed when it couldn't before, but cannot inject it. This seems to be a universal thing, perhaps from a bad install, and doesn't play a part, as it can't inject ANY eggs. The computer STILL can't find it even after this and devthing can't inject, although it is a step up? |

Update 5,000:
I removed the program from my system and and attempted to reinstall. What happens when i try? It attempts to install.. that's right, Fraps! Guess you would have never guessed that.
Both installations have been from using the genetics kit downloadable from gameware's website.
If anyone has a seperate install that doesn't attempt to install fraps (fraps?! Really?!) i'd appreciate it. I had this problem with the sprite editor before, minus the bizarre fraps thing, and I instead downloaded the version from treesprite's website. That one worked perfectly fine and it might be the solution to my rambling woes. However, an alternate version of the genetic's kit is not available there, and there appears to not be one -anywhere- except gameware's website. |

Oh when you try to inject it doesn't work you need the Egg Maker. You type in the name of your gen file in the egg maker and you have an egg! Just make sure you have the gen file in the right place.
You can find the egg maker here.

The only other C3/DS gentics editor I know of is Gene Lab and it's a fairly good substitute. It's good for most sorts of editing, and the one I use the most. I don't think it likes to edit emitter genes though, at least on my computer.

Thanks, Kitty. I ended up using Live GMS and it worked wonders for what I wanted to do, but that's not available at all times. |
