Hi folks,
I'm running the original standalone Docking Station on a laptop for testing purposes. It can cope fine with creatures named via Protective Tub, until I open the creatures history page (where the norns are named). It only seems to display around 10 characters. I've tried installing the creatures history update agent, but this doesn't affect it. The norns can call each other by their full names, but it also seems that the max. characters for the hand's speech bubble are also restricted, because I can't give instructions to all of the norns by name.
I'm assuming this was something that was fixed in the later versions, because the Exodus version doesn't seem to have this problem. Is there any way round it, other than installing Exodus on the laptop? |

Find the right cosfiles and expand the lenght of the text field.
Though.... I think it actually is defined via a blank sprite file which creates the boundaries of the text field.
Maybe you just need to replace the according blank sprites with larger ones and then somehow make the game reload the file.
How to reload sprite files? Not sure, ask a breed developer.

Don't think it's the displayed size of the field - more like a character limit in an array somewhere. I've been looking through the cosfiles, and I've found one where there's a CAOS command to get the name, but there doesn't seem to be a restriction there on the variable length - unless it's something hardcoded into the original DS game engine. |

I don't know if it helps, but there were different versions of Docking Station. Later versions might contain a fix. Have you downloaded DS from Don's or TreeSprite's website, or maybe somewhere else?

Can't remember where I got it - it might be from Don's site. I wonder if that means I need to run the version2 update on it? |

Input fields indeed are limited by the size of their background sprite. It is something that annoys me every time again. I got an extra blank file I use specifically for numeric fields, because when I take a smaller one, I end up with text in 2 lines or being cut off and what not.

You could also install and then remove Protective Tub in each of your worlds. The name field extension's supposed to stick around when you remove the agent. |

Oops, thought I'd replied to this - it was indeed the Protective Tub autonamer, that I'd got installed on the other versions but not on the laptop. Installed it and everything's been fine. |
