GOG Albian Years C2 not working?

I don't usually go to forums for help, but I couldn't find this anywhere else.

So I just got the GOG version of The Albian Years. Creatures 1 works fine, but when I start up Creatures 2 (in 16-bit color mode) I can see the World Switcher but before long a "Server Busy" error appears:

"This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch To...' to activate the busy program and correct the problem."

Three options are available, being "Switch To...," "Retry," and "Cancel" (which is grayed out.)
If I click "Switch To..." the start menu pops up and the message changes to:
"An error was detected during startup. Creatures 2 may not function correctly. Please restart your machine and try again." I click OK, and everything closes.
If I click Retry, the error just closes and reopens itself.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I remember getting this error when I first installed but I can't remember exactly what fixed it. Try running it as administrator perhaps?

Also what version of windows are you running?

How many times have you clicked Retry? If you just keep doing it over and over, there's a possibility the game will eventually work.

Are you rumning it in compatibility mode other than 16-bit mode? I think I remember getting that error after I clicked 'Switch to..' when I was running it for any other conpatibility mode other than default. Running as administrator also caused the error. (For me, using Windows 8 )

Running as admin didn't fix it. I am running Win7 64-bit.

After about 10 clicks of Retry I get the "An error was detected during startup..." message again.

Also I am not using any compatibility modes. Should I be?

Try using the compatibility modes next if admin didn't work. You can also try running the game from the file itself instead of the shortcut GOG creates. This will bypass the GOG launcher.

I'm at work at the moment so can't check but I think it's launcher.exe in the install folder. Try the compatibility modes on that file as well.

I didn't use compatibility modes or running as admin because it simply did not work. The only thing I changed was the color mode to 16-bit.

If I remember correctly, compatibility modes must be applied to the 'creatures2.exe' for them to work, if you want to try them. My experience though is that compatibility modes made the problem startup worse. Running as admin completely broke it. But for that, I blame Windows 8, so it might work on Windows 7. Note that I use the 'launcher.exe' to run the game. Seems to work best, as Nudgie mentioned.

Creatures 2 barely worked to begin with, and works even less on newer operating systems. GOG.com states that C2 works with Windows 7, so it should be working. :/

Well, I tried the compatibility modes (on both launcher.exe and creatures2.exe) and started it with launcher.exe. Nothing.

However, I looked around the error reports. It was just a lot of gibberish to me, but I figured out that the problem has something to do with a file called ddraw.dll. I found this in the Creatures 2 folder, but couldn't do anything with it since the game broke even more when I deleted it. I then decided to dig up my old CD of C2 and installed it. I knew it wouldn't run, but I wanted to check the files. Sure enough, ddraw wasn't there. Not sure if this is important or not.

If I cant get this to work soon, I suppose I'll just stick with Creatures 1. I kinda wanted C2 for the nostalgia but it looks like that's not gonna happen.

I couldn't get it running stable in Windows 8 but on Windows 7 it was alright.

But yea, as Isis said it wasn't very stable to begin with lol >.<

You can ask someone for a new version of that file, if you deleted it. That could fix the problem, as something could have gone wrong with installation that screwed up that particular file. .dll files are rather important, if I recall.

Haha Nudgie, I remember being able to play C2 for a little while, then it would run slowly, or crash. I was playing from a disc back then, and even so I think that made no difference on how well the game played. It was still... broken. Stuff didn't work right, and I got frustrated. My norns went stupid randomly, (OHSS) and things within the world constantly glitched. I didn't have internet so patching wasn't much of an option, and I didn't know the community existed. XD

Back on topic, there could be some C2 patches you don't have that may fix your problem, but I am not sure. I have never gotten any for C2 (I use GOG version now since my disc got ruined) Though I have heard of a "Creatures Remastered Patch" but I think that is for C3/DS.
