| C3/DS Norn Offspring Mutation..Or Error? | |

So, I have been pretty much letting my norns go wild. So far, I have had two offspring that cannot move...and when the hand grabs them, they only slide with the frontal pose still (I hope that made sense).
Is it a common mutation or have I made something go amiss..? |

This is what is known as the "slider" mutation. It's a fairly well known mutation, and tends to crop up when breeding things like Amanora's breeds (with all the extra color genes) with normal creatures.
It's avoidable if you watch what you breed together, but unfortunately there's not much you can do for the afflicted creature.

Actually, I believe if you have them in a docked world you can give them injections through the C3 Medical Bay. It takes a fair amount of work, but if done right you can nurse them through their lives.

Sadly no. There is no way to make them mobile.

If you want, you could send them to me and I'll take care of them?

Sadly, the first one died because I didn't get to him in time. But if you want the other one, sure! It's a shame too..because right when I exported the little guy..his mother was giving him kisses. ;-; Anyhow, he appears to be a Dream/Astro Norn mix. 3rd generation. Should I upload him to adoptions..? |

Sure! Just make sure you include everything you have to say about him and explain why he's special. Then people will be more inclined to adopt.

Where did you get the Dream Norn genome from? They're fairly prone to this kind of mutation.

I think I know the reason as to why these norns have been suffering. I didn't download the updated genome that apparently somewhat prevents this. |

Do dream norn hybrids also tend suffer from missing organs? I distinctly remember having a breed that was prone to that, but I forgot what it was... |

The exact technical reason this happens with Amanora's breeds is that they have a bunch of extra pigment/pigment bleed genes at the end of their genome while lacking the default genes. When such a norn breeds with a normal creature, the gene numbers don't match up sometimes and wind up resulting in things like missing poses or brains.

You could call it more of an error than a mutation, really. It's a weakness in the way the engine handles genomes with different layous, like Grendel Man explained. I also sometimes got norns that were unable to do anything but walk right from these incompatible genomes, instead of sliders.
Creatures 2 had something similar happen if you bred Canny norns with regular norns. I think it might have been for the same reason. Except in C2, you'd either end up with norns with far too few genes - who would die instantly - or worse, norns with far too many genes, who would crash the game upon birth. |
