Does this happen to anyone else?

I don't know why this happens...but in each of the Creatures games that I've played (C2 and DS, mainly), one or two of the breeds I've installed seem to take over the joint -- especially when I've done wolfing runs.

I don't know if it's simply because theses breeds are stronger and/or more prolific, or if it's due to a glitch of some kind...but when I play C2, the Bird and Aquatic Dragon Norns have often ended up dominating the place even though I have a lot of other breeds installed (I wish C2 gave you more information and/or more control over which breeds you can hatch in the incubator).

When I play DS, the Zebra Norns are the ones that take over even though I've hatched several Norns of different breeds! What gives? Has this happened to anyone else?

I normally end up with mixed breeds being king of the game worlds with no particular breed being dominant. I do have breeds die out, though.

Well, I'm doing a DS wolfling run as we speak...and at this point, nearly all the surviving creatures have Zebra features with a little Treehugger thrown in. I began with only one of most of the breeds I have -- one Apple, one Bondi, one Butterfly, one ChiChi, one Fallow, one Hardman, one Harlequin, one Siamese, one Tilynn, one Treehugger, and one (just one!) Zebra. (I usually add a couple of metarooms so that they have plenty of room to run around.) As far as I can tell, all the other breed strains have died off to the point that none of the surviving population have anything other than Treehugger and Zebra characteristics.

This is interesting, I'm doing something similar atm as well, although my goal is behavioral. I had an 1st gen pair (one bondi and one treehugger) that I raised together and bred. I took care in raising them too so that they lived full and educated lives. After that, I introduced their offspring to other 1st generation breeds (one of each) so that each subsequent generation (in theory) would have at least some bondi/treehugger qualities. After I felt I had educated them enough, I left them all to their own devices and let the wolfling run take its course (I am also using all CFE breeds).
Later, I discovered that only the astro-mix seemed to be the dominant breeder (nearly half my population looked nearly identical with each other) followed by the zebra-mix, and the "runt" of the litter was the siamese mix (whom NO-ONE seemed to like at all - so sad!).
Also, NONE of the hand's educational lessons seemed to be passed down. Most of the time, all my norns would be found cuddled up and crowded around the food vendor or displaying OCD with the elevators. Some displayed no behavior at all and simply laid down until their life bars were at 1-0%.
I'm starting to think that norns need to be re-educated after every generation, otherwise they'll just degenerate into mindless zombies. I have yet to see any remarkable survival behavior mutations from any of my past or current wolfling runs.

Maybe it's just me...but I've (unfortunately) noticed that the more I coddle my Norns, the weaker they seem to become intellectually.

I've been monitoring my wolfling run from time to time and, as I usually do, "cloning" (temporarily removing and then copying) any Norn who seems to be doing particularly well -- I look for Norns who have enough curiosity to have made it to the HLM (regardless of where they were born) and who don't seem to have any trouble keeping themselves fed and amused. I've come across a few really smart ones, although not as many as I'd like (and I've had some disappointments as well)...but I've also noticed that a few others in the run have managed to learn bits and pieces of the vocabulary simply by listening to some of the others who have used the HLM. However, none of those who have not yet used the HLM have managed to pick up more than a couple of words and phrases...nowhere close to the full vocabulary.

Maybe it's similar to what I once saw in C2...I managed to tame a Grendel by naming him and tickling him, and he started hanging out with one of the Norns. After a while, the Norn in question (who had been thoroughly educated in terms of vocabulary) began to use a few words of Grendel-speak! As is often the case, perhaps part of it is the company Norns keep...if a smart Norn begins to spend too much time with stupid ones, he or she adapts to the crowd culture and loses the gains made.

I guess that the Zebra norn was particularly popular in your world? Without knowing too much else about the world (like when the other breeds died, what sexes the norns were, how they migrated) that's really all we can surmise - that the Zebra norn was popular.

Pankypie, have you tried turning off the voice activation on the food vendor? My theory is that having it on tends to lead to norns that express themselves constantly and huddle around the vendor, and they don't explore so much.

There always seems to be a dominant breed in my worlds, but since it is never the same I guess it's just that a male was around most females or a female was the only one who truly got a chance to mate.

This is quite funny though, to see what kind of creatures you'll end up with after a few generations.

I've noticed that dream norns tend to be dominant as well, but that's moslty because they can't mutate much.
