Hello everyone,
I have been trying for a bit to get my Albian Years version of Creatures 2 working on my laptop, which runs Windows 8.
Unfortunately, it just won't work! I have DS and C3 as well as Albian Years C1 all working fine, but C2 has been giving nothing but trouble! ![[ncrying] [ncrying]](/images/smilies/emot_crying.gif)
The game's world switcher pops up, but when I try to load a world, I get this error:
"The error [DDERR_INVALIDPARAMS] has been detected when attempting to draw game sprites. Please check that your desktop is in 16-bit video mode, Microsoft DirectX is correctly installed and that you have the latest driver software for your graphics card. Extra information: [Creatures path]\dung.S16"
The thing is, I've searched the internet for fixes and tried the ones suggested (that I could find), but to no avail! :C
I have it NOT running in any compatibility mode after reading somewhere that I shouldn't. I only have it running in 16 bit color. Also, considering C1, C3, and DS are all working, I'm pretty sure DirectX is installed properly.
The only fix I was unable to try was the one given on the Creatures Wiki, where it said to change the Loading Flags entry from 0 to 1 in the registry. I went to the proper place in the registry, but there was no Loading Flags entry! (I'm assuming because it said the entry is created after the game runs for the first time, but the game doesn't run, so the entry wasn't created.)
Can anybody help me with this problem? I really want to play Creatures 2 and this is my last resort
Thank you so much,
-OctoberFlash

I'm fairly certain that it isn't possible to install Creatures 2 from CD due to an issue with DirectX. I know there are some possible workarounds, but they typically only work for a handful of people. The GOG.com versions are usually the best bet, especially when they go on sale.

Believe me, I tried so many things with my original disc! Getting C1 and C3/DS working with few problems seemed to show that there wouldn't be an issue with C2. At least my old CD is still sitting about as a collector's item, I guess.
Have you ever considered getting The Albian Years at GOG.com? That way, you'll also get a copy of C1 that works on newer computers.

I thought you were installing from a CD? Like I said, this version isn't known to be fully compatible with newer systems due to the DirectX problem. The GOG.com version of The Albian Years is much more stable.

You could try setting up a Windows XP virtual machine. They don't normally work with C2, but if you have an XP license lying around it's worth a shot. What version of Windows 8 do you have? |

I think it's windows 8 professional.. I don't really know how virtual machines and such work though :S

I can't even get C2 to run well on XP for me, so, good luck. Then again, for some reason even DS crashes for me after so much time spent on it. No matter the computer. But since DS works best, you know there's C2toDS right?

Argh, yeah.. when I had XP I couldn't get it working either.
I knew there was a C2toDS, but I thought it was incomplete.. maybe I was wrong
Edit: I've gotten C2toDS.. It's not quite C2, but it'll do :>

Hi!
How did you manage to install Albian Years on Windows 8? I'm a bit curious because the setup.exe won't run on my laptop.
As for Creatures 2, I'm afraid it doesn't even work properly on Windows 7. :-( Well, at least it never worked for me.

Ah, for me I think I had to go into the CD's files and put compatibility settings on the setup.exe. I told it to run for Windows XP and I put some other settings on it that I don't remember. ><;
Yeah :C I couldn't get Creatures 2, so I ended up going with C2toDS. It's the next best thing, I guess. ^_^

I've been trying to install Albian Years for days and it suddenly works. I'll see if I can find a way to make C2 work but I'm not counting on it.

Hey, I'm having issues getting my Creatures 2 game to work. It comes up with the world menu, I click world and then it has a little loading thing then it pops up with this: The error [DDERR_INVALIDPARAMS] has been detected when attempting to draw game sprites.
Please check that your desktop is in 16-bit video mode, Microsoft DirectX is correctly installed and that you have the latest driver software for your graphics card.
Extra information: C Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Creatures Albian Years\Creatures 2\Images\dung.S16
So I googled it and tried to switch that flag thingy in Regedit to 1, which took me a few hours to figure out, and then it just resets everytime I try to play back to 0. It's so annoying and I don't know what to do to get it running. |

As mentioned above, the CD version of Creatures 2 is not known to work reliably on newer versions of Windows. I highly recommend looking into GOG.com! Their version of Creatures: The Albian Years is very stable, and I've had no problems running it on Windows Vista and Windows 7. Best of luck!
