| C1 Nornposer game path problem on WinXP | |

Im using Albian Years (from my Creatures Trilogy pack, that let the Creatures games run on WinXP,
wich is the operate system I use.
Anyhow - I downloaded Nornposer for C1 and put it in it's own folder of choice, and can run it,but have problem for it to get the game path right,as I know it is set to recognize the original old C1 ch I do own,but I could never get my real old C1 run on win XP,so thats why I got that trilogy pack in the first place).
I even tried to manualy enter the path(C:\Gameware Development\Albian Years\Creatures 1
But had my doubts as I know older programs allways shorten such longer names like nornposer does:
C:\Progra~1\Creatu~1
any ideas? I realy would be happy to be able to use it,as I can run it and all - it's only the path to my game I would need to somehow set up and then Im sure it would be useable!
(using nornposer C2 for some of the C1 breeds just isn't the same ^^' )
Also before anyone ask me - yes I have used the remastered patch...
Thanks for any help in advance! |

I'm only at my work machine at them moment so can't check for myself, so I've got to check,
Where are you inputting the directory path? Is it in an .ini file or elsewhere?
Does the path have quotes round it for the space characters?

My current C1 setup is in the following directory:
C: \Program Files\GOG.com\Creatures Albian Years\Creatures 1
In Norn Pose, I have to use the following game path:
C: \Progra~1\GOG.com\Creatu~1\Creatu~1
In your case, Norngirl, have you tried C: \Gamewa~1\Albian~1\Creatu~1? (Note the extra space I have in the main directory). It's always a pain for me to remember this game path. At least now I have it written down! I had to dig through a bunch of online articles about how to convert file names to this format. Hopefully this works for you!

Thanks for trying to helping me Jessica!
Yeah thats also why I asked here because Im unsure where to put that symbol and the 1 in the names and how much to cut of the names in the path ^^'
I tried that path you suggested but no go,
but thats maybe because I noticed something!
I just re-cheked my C1 game path:
C: \Program\Gameware Development\Creatures Albian Years
I forgot to mention C: \ Program <- !!
so Im going to try now to add "Progra~1"
so it becomes :
C: \Progra~1\Gamewa~1\Albian~1\Creatu~1
Instead of just C: \Gamewa~1\Albian~1\Creatu~1
as the "program" was missing ^^'
EDIT: Oops, I just cheked the Progra~
is nodded to "Program Files",not "Program",
Re-typing it simply to Program didn't help either O_o'
I just keep getting this: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h78/Getchuz/Nornpose-path_zps95f2e8a9.png
@Don: Im not sure what you mean by file and inputing?

I used to find my directory by looking at the path that comCOB would put for the folder. Maybe that will help?

Ah yes, you're pasting the directory path into the application itself.
The ~ was used to shrink long directory names down to 8 chararacters,
It does this by taking the first 6 characters of the name if its over 8 characters long,
and adds to the end ~1 for the first directory that begins with that prefix, and ~2 is for the second directory that begins with that prefix, etc.
So \Creatures Albian Years\ becomes \Creatu~1\
and a second folder at the same location named \Creatures Albian Zoo\ would become \Creatu~2\
Therefore "C:\Program Files\Gameware Development\Creatures Albian Years\Creatures 1\" should shorten to:
C:\Progra~1\Gamewa~1\Creatu~1\Creatu~1

Yeah - pasting it in manualy is the only way,as it won't auto detect ^^'
Thanks for explaining it for me,Don - but the thing is - mine don't use "program Files"
My path: C: \Program\Gameware Development\Creatures Albian Years
As seen - mine is just "Program"..so I wonder,
"Program" dosn't get shortened,right?
When I tried to enter simply Program,it didn't help,
only gave me the standard message that the path is wrong.

Im not sure what you mean with comCob,is it a program of some sort?
Im glad you people try to help me :3 |

err, i meant COBcom, its a program that lummoxjr made. When you save a new COB in it, it will show the shortened paths on the side. So i would just copy the directory it would show me for my creatures folder.
although it looks like your path may just be C: \Progra~1\Gamewa~1\Creatu~1\Creatu~1 for C: \Program\Gameware Development\ Creatures Albian Years\Creatures 1

Ooh I see! That surely is a great idea!
Thank you - yeah I think so too ,but when I enter that path you suggested - it still complains about the path : (
(I am having the Nornposer exe in the creature folder itself,so it should be right)
Maybe I have to try the COBcom myself - or maybe my nornposer just refuse to work ;__;
EDIT: I tried CobCom now, still no go - as it list instead of program it becomes C\...\Gamewa~1\Creatu~1\Creatu~1 O_O
Now Im clueless how to solve my prob - I don't want to re-install my game so it comes into "program files" just because of nornposer T__T' |

What version of XP do you have? And which version of Nornpose? I've got Nornpose 2.02 on XP Service Pack 3 and it's absolutely fine - though there does seem to be something non-standard about your installation if you have C Program instead of C Program Files - did you install XP as an upgrade over an earlier version of Windows? I've never had a problem getting Creatures to work with XP, but all the versions of XP I've had have been fresh installs.
Everything else people have said up-thread is spot on. The only thing I can add is: check to see if you have both a Program and a Program Files directory. If you do, it may be possible that your path is C Progra~2\Gamewa~1\Creatu~1\Creatu~1
Similarly, if you have multiples of the other directories, the number may not be ~1. Without seeing your directory tree structure, it's hard to tell. But there should not be a space anywhere in it - DOS naming doesn't "do" spaces. |

No this is a pure windows XP,as far I know - it's WinXP Home Edition and the Nornposer for C1 is shown here - you can see it on it's header :
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h78/Getchuz/Nornpose-path_zps95f2e8a9.png
And also my game do work - so do nornposer too,it only complain over the wrong path X_X'
About the program bit isntead of program files:
the only time I had creatures ever installed on Program files was when I got first my original C1 for my win 95 when I was a kid - but as said - since my original C1 cd won't install on win XP,I had to buy the trilogy pack, wich have Albian Years (C1 and C2) Exoddus (C3 & DS) and Village (CA & CP)
as this pack is for win XP users.
installing the upgraded win XP - The Creatures Trilogy,
it sets "program" as default folder, then program files - alltought I did see I do have a program file folder too,but it's allmost empty ^^'
I also know about the spaces - I did say I can't type them togheter here on the forum as it becomes that silly smiley if I do -> this one , I do remember to remove the spaces when entering it in the nornposer XD
The only thing I do know about the creatures 1 folder (or actuly all the creatures games i been installing from that trilogy cd of mine) is set in programs and one is set in my documents\creatures (and inside that one is C1,c2 and also c3-ds) but those folder only holds extra leftover files - like for the C1 one, there is the genetics folder, but it dosn't contain the mum and dad genoms, instead it holds all the moniker genoms of all the creatures that ever been imported/living in ^^'
same goes for image folder in documents creatures - it contains not the breed sprites, but moniker sprites of all creatures,so thats why I don't think that it will help if I try set the path to that folder,as it lacks the proper sprites/att files, wich is within the real creature folder so to speak, wich is : program\gameware development\Creatures Albian years\creatures1
EDIT: Here is a image showing what I mean by 2 folders: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h78/Getchuz/mycreaturepaths_zps4f27f609.png
trying C: \...\Gamewa~1\Creatu~1\Creatu~1
as Cobcom suggested didn't help,
trying C: \Progra~1\Gamewa~1\Creatu~1\Creatu~1
wich GirlySatan suggested, wich I think should be right - so I have no idea...but there is one thing more Im going to try as a last resort - copy over a creature folder with the atts and sprites within into program files folder,
I did something similar once to nornimator once and it did work,so hopefuly it maybe will work *crosses fingers*
Thanks to you all who try to help me, Im sorry about all this - I never thought this would be so troublesome,as It do run, then entering the path is just all I need to be able to use it ..
EDIT: IT WORKS!!!!! I did my last resort - making a empty folder and named it Creatures 1 and put it into Program files, and copied only over the body data and image folder from my program-gameware development creatures 1 folder - and droped in nornpose exe there and it works 8 D
Here is Proof: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h78/Getchuz/FixedNornposerforc1_zps4df9bef5.png
(and yes - I have no clue why grendels are messed up,they look so ingame too..did not touch anything - can't recall they ever looked so messed up at front when it was my original old C1 cd...hmm)
Hah! Is so glad that my silly idea works, but I did say I did something similar once before, just didn't belive it would work for this now too XD |

I'm glad it works, Norngirl! As far as the Grendels not looking correct, that is actually how they show up in the original game: Their sprites and body data were all mixed up. I've fixed these issues with the Updated Creatures 1 Grendel. Note that the one weird issue I've found with my updated version is that in Nornposer, setting all body parts to position 9 causes the program to crash and quit. I have no idea why, but if you do update them, just be aware of this problem! The actual issue, I believe, affects a few leg parts, but only in that position.

Thank you Jessica ^^ Yep,very happy it works now!
Ah yes, well I do know they where all mixed up,but my memory somehow want to remember it to be..not this extrem mixed for males at least O.o'
but yeah - true that they surely had a issue with both front and back indeed,those poor things ;__;
I did see the news about your'e grendel project,
wich is great ^^
I only didn't like much of the cutting the hair when baby stage, (no offense meant, just my own openion) otherwise it looks good ^^
Oh my thats strange,so when set 9 *backveiw* for all ages it does this,or just for one specific? o.o
I wonder if it can be fixed somehow
*if ever needed the backveiw of grendel via the nornposer c1 program*

Glad you got it going! Must be something to do with XP Home - which is bizarre, because I thought it only differed on the networking components... |
