So far, my Norns have learned pretty much okay, but I can't seem to figure out how to teach them how to express themselves, like "me tired" and "eem hungry". Is there any way to do this without cobs? ![[nquestion] [nquestion]](/images/smilies/emot_question.gif)

Not that I've found, unfortunately. I actually go through the game with my Norns and Grendels uneducated in how to express themselves in English. I like using the different kits to figure things out if need be, though it's not entirely ideal. Definitely wish these had been included with the original learning computer, though!

There is a verb allocated for finding out what norns are thinking - Slink's Encyclopedia Nornica calls it 'think'. Unfortunately, without explicitly teaching a norn the concept using a learning-device, it can't be used in the game.
(Though because C1 norns don't suggest things to each other like in C3, they don't get stuck in loops.)

So it's not detrimental if they can't speak those words?

I wouldn't say so. I've gone through several generations and had to put up with the Nornish responses mixed in. Hasn't really taken that much away, at least for me! The big downside is that you won't really know what a Norn/Grendel is feeling based on words. I like using the kits for this purpose, though!
On Malkin's topic: Is the 'think' word different from the 'what' word in C1? When asked "what" I usually get responses like "me look food" or "me push Norn." I'm guessing this is what action the Norn is thinking of, rather than what he/she is feeling. Didn't know about that word, though! I might need to pick up Enclyclopedia Nornica one of these days!

As far as I can recall, 'think' is not the same as 'what' - 'what' is 'what are you doing', and 'think' is 'what's on your mind?' - 'think' is the precursor to 'express'. (But without the response loops!)

Norns will spontaneously say "think" - it seems to be when they're processing too many inputs (i.e. it's taking them some time to work out which of a range of actions they could do, or assessing drive levels). Asking "what" can result in them either telling you which action is most likely, or which drive is highest.
I've used Slink's Encyclopaedia to teach norns the full set of drives/emotions and there are some they never use. The only one I know is suppressed by the game itself is the one for high sex drive (called "amorous" by default in the cob) - that's what the norn's saying when you just see a blank speech bubble. They'll say they're sleepy, tired or hurt; but they'll say "food" rather than "hungry", for example. |
