So I've noticed that the Fishing Cactus Blog has moved over to Disqus, and I'm a bit disappointed. Looking at the Wikipedia page, it seems like yet another platform which I need to register onto that will stalk me all over the internet. :(

Some commentators have noted the privacy issues inherent in the use of services like Disqus, which serve their content through third party JavaScript widgets.
As with other embedded web widgets such as like buttons, the Disqus widget acts as a web bug which tracks a users activities, even when they are not logged in, across different sites that use the Disqus commenting system. Information tracked by Disqus.com, which may be disclosed to 3rd parties, includes pseudonymous analytics data such as a users IP address, their web-browser's version and installed add-ons, and their referring pages and exit links. Although this data is referred to by Disqus as "Non-Personally Identifiable Information", such data, when aggregated, has been shown to be usable for de-anonymizing users.
Users wishing to avoid these issues may opt to install a privacy-enhancing web browser extension, such as Ghostery or DoNotTrackPlus, which identify widgets such as Disqus as web-bugs, and allows them to be blocked; this renders Disqus-powered commenting sections unviewable.
Disqus has also been criticized for publishing its registered users' entire commenting histories, along with a list of connected blogs and services, on the publicly viewable user profile pages.

What are the advantages to using Disqus?

You know what the crowd does and thinks. You can aim your marketing at them and hopefully sell more.

In case you want to use it, but feel a bit paranoid...
It is not perfect, but a good start.

Yay, targeted marketing. [nsick] What are the advantages to using Disqus if you're not the site's owner?

...advantages for someone else of the site owner? Hellooooooo? The majority of the website owners are absolutely not like the people here in the CC, such as Mummy, Rascii or Sparkleblue.

Most of them don't give a.... poop about the "advantages" of anyone but themselves.

The only advantage I can see is linking comments across blogs to one profile... Which doesn't really seem like an advantage. If Fishing Cactus made a switch, I almost wish they had gone more the Blogger/Wordpress way. At least there are anonymous options there, and I've never heard of privacy issues with them.

Didn't even realize there were these issues until you brought it up, Malkin. Though I have an account with Disqus, it's now blocked! The old commenting feature on the Fishing Cactus blog was a little dated, but I never had a problem with it.

Disqus is appealing to bigger companies. Disqus sells and uses private data, they are by far no charity organization. But for bigger companies the advantage is that you don't need to hire any forum administrators and moderators - that is done by disqus "for free". For the users there are only disadvantages i think, but for the company it means paying less money and attention and so - hopefully - the money gets into developement (and not into greedy CEOs pockets).

I suspect the advantage to Disqus (and thence to the companies that use them) is that putting all a commenter's history in one place - from everywhere they've commented - will show up trolls, and even patterns of behaviour, a lot faster. Though that, of course, is only any use if someone does something about them. See, also, the potential for civil liberties abuse there.

I've never signed up for Disqus - remember, if you're not paying, you're not the customer. And, on the internet, that usually means you're the product. (I'd recommend installing both Ghostery and disconnect.me though.)

I heard from my best friend irl that Disqus was hacked once

I don't really trust this "Disqus" because if this web bug watches what you do on the internet even when you arn't logged into it then that probably includes passwords. I am already rather paranoid about keyloggers seeing as I always check that there is only one winlogon before I log into anything and Disqus just seems worse. I don't want information that can possibly de-anonymize me being sold online and it annoys me even more that fishing cactus have moved their blog to that.
