| When is a Half-Life Not a Half-Life? | |

I'm finally back on track with putting together a genetics lesson, and I wanted to touch on the subject of half-lives. It's an interesting concept, especially since all of the half-lives are crammed together in one gene.
My biggest issue is whether or not these half-lives are actually half-lives... To be a half-life, the value would describe the time needed for the chemical to reach half of its original value. I though this was the case, but then I came across the aging chemical in C1. It has a half-life of 136, which equates to approximately 10 hours. The lifespan of my Norns usually falls between 8 and 12 hours, which makes me think that these half-lives are, for lack of a better term, full-lives. If this was truly a half-life, then life spans would be exceptionally longer... Closer to 60-70 hours.
Does anyone know more about half-lives? I've checked several sources, and most state that these are, indeed, half-lives for each chemical to reach half of its original value. I just want to be sure I'm on the right track before posting anything. It helps me better understand what's going on, too! Thanks for any help!

According to Lis Morris's C3 genetics kit tutorial, half-lives in Creatures don't act exactly like they do in the real world, but it's close enough that the title is a good approximation.
I'm not that well-versed as far as C1 goes, but for C3/DS there is support to suggest that the half-life gene does indeed act like a half-life. If one sets the half-life of the Life chemical to 99/15 minutes (the default value for norns), then the standard creature lives for 5 and a half hours (roughly). Setting it to a tenth of that value (1.5 minutes) results in a creature that lives for only a half hour.
Again, though, this is C3/DS - it might be a different story for C1 and C2.

Thanks, Grendel Man! I had a feeling that there might be a different story for C3/DS... Especially since the half-life values are associated with different times for each game. I'll definitely take a look into these differences: Your explanation makes perfect sense for C3/DS. I figured there would be some slight issues with half-lives lining up perfectly, but so long as they're close enough, I'm happy!
I also plan on posting some charts for half-lives in each of the games, since they differ so much. I've seen a few spread around some Creatures sites, but hopefully having them altogether will help show the differences and help other understand what's going on!
