Hey guys, I've been wanting to start making cobs for a while. Preferably for Creatures 1, Creatures 2 would be second choice. I figured I'd dabble in BobCob and just get used it while doing some tutorials. This is where my issues begin. BobCob won't even work on my OS. I have windows 7 and I'm unable to run it. If I try I get this error: Component 'COMDLG32.OCX' not correctly registered: File is missing or invalid.
I browsed some help forums of people with similar issues but it seems programs like this for XP only work 5% of the time for win7, I tried some suggested fixes, manually registering it, all failed. I even tried the BoBCoB 1.44 from AmberCreatures but to no avail. I then went to try the microsoft virtual XP program they have available to try and run it through that, but unfortunately its only available to people with Win7 Professional or higher. BLEH!
If anyone could give me ANY advice at all. A fix? A different Cob program that would run on Win7? I have seen some people out there who still make C1 Cobs and if you guys could throw me a bone, I'd be super thankful! :') Maybe a little briefing on sprite editors or cob editors that are in working order for windows 7? because I also couldn't find Creatures 2 Sprite Workshop, which seems to have been deleted from Gameware's website -_- *cries* I've spent days trying to figure out how to start making cobs, but I keep hitting walls.
Thanks so much in advance guys, looking forward to any advice. ;_; |

You might find the replies in this topic useful (Jessica asked the same question recently): C1 COB Creator Programs & Questions
I wish I could help more, but I've only developed for C3/DS so far. Good luck! |

Okay. oh jeez, where do I start. (Keep in mind I have the GOG version of Creatures one as my original creatures disc wont install on windows 7, which i just tried again in desperation) Here's what happens.
Double click Creatures Editor32
"Unable to read key SOFTWARE\Millennium Interactive\Creatures\Hatchery\0.1."
What? Close that out.
"Warning, the Eggs Manipulator was unable to detect the version of creatures needed for this. Please ensure that the update pack to 1.0.2 has been applied."
I am pretty sure the updates were included with the GOG version, as well as the first life kit.
Close that out.
"File not found."
What file? Close that out.
"Unable to open Creatures Key in the registry. Possible reasons include that you have not got creatures installed on your computer. If you have creatures installed then export the creatures branch of the registry and e-mail to: Daniel@farstar.demon.co.uk"
I doubt that e-mail is still in use.. >_> close that out.
Maybe has something to do with permissions?
"Failure reading Creatures Registry Information"
..sigh...close that out.
Then a loading screen for the editor pops up, but freezes and never gets past "Loading Creatures Palette."
Yikes.
I also tried finding CobCom with no luck and COE is apparently older (one of the first cob creator programs) along with CobCom so I am hesitant to even bother with all the troubles I'm having with even newer programs. |

Hmm, I'll have to look into it some more when I have some time. I know that I get the same error message about the hatchery, but everything else works. Have you tried moving the file mentioned in the original Readme? I'm absolutely swamped with CCSF stuff and other things lately, but I'll be glad to try to help you troubleshoot it soon! I haven't tried out the COB editing side of it very much, though. Hopefully things get worked out soon!

Hi Jessica! Thank you so much for your help! I didn't even notice the readme told me to put a file into the windows system folder. However when I did nothing changed
I think I see a major issue with the GOG version of creatures and it's big problems with older creatures utilities like this. It looks like it's trying to pull from the registry, and it used to be that the creatures registry files were under:
HKEY_USERS/.Default/Software/Millenium Interactive/Creatures/1.0
With the GOG version it's under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Gameware Development/Creatures1/1.0
It's having problems connecting with that.
Also there's a bunch of junk under there that I don't remember being there way back when I used to apply registry edits to creatures.
here's a screenshot of what it looks like: registry
and also another lovely screenshot of what pops up when I start Creatures Editor32:
I get a box of creatures resources information and the loading screen stuck. What's this resources box? o__O
Creatures Editor32 forever loading
Anyway, thank you so much guys I'm so happy to have a little bit of guidance here. I would really love to start making cobs, it just seems that I'm over a decade late to be using most of these programs! haha. Jessica, don't worry about it too much, I understand we're all working on our own things. I don't want to hog anyone's time. Hopefully I can get this figured out soon enough and start working on some cool stuff too! |

Have you tried CobCom yet? It may work, but only on 32-bit Windows. |

Ah, alas I am running 64-bit windows This seems to be a problem for me most of the time. haha. I'll give it a try just in case and see what happens. I'll have to go looking for CobCom and COE because I first glance I couldn't find either, but I shall continue the search! I AM DETERMINED! Thanks Ylukyun |

Yeah, I can't seem to find any downloads for CobCom and COE after searching around for a bit, and I am doubtful they would run in the first place. I wonder if I could somehow get the original creatures installed if only to run CrEd32 or BobCob since those seem to be the more recent ones that have a chance to run on windows 7. It just seems they have issues with the GOG version of creatures since the directories and registry paths are different.
Very disheartening. If only I could code! I'd make a Cob program for the GOG win 7 version! ;p ha. |

Can you download and unzip the archived copy of CobCom from The Norn Underground?
COE's archived link is broken, not sure where you'd get it these days.
EDIT: You can get version 1.4 from an archive of the official Cyberlife website.

Alright guys, for now I am going to partition my drive and install XP on that. From there I should be able to install my original creatures disc and then run most of these programs. I'll let you guys know if it works and end this thread. |
