In my feral run, I noticed a creature randomly exclaiming as if she had been slapped, and the hoverdoc showed her as being in pain. Wondering what was wrong, I wanted to look into her genome. I started up gene compare, then realized I had no way to access the genetics of the norn. Exporting her only gives me a creature file. My genetics folder only holds the genetics for the breeds I have, not any individual norns. I recall a program that would turn a creature file into a .gen, but I can't find it anywhere now.
How can I get the .gen of this creature so I can figure out what is wrong with her? |

I assume this is for C3/DS due to the mention of the Hoverdoc? If you have exported her, her file should include a long string of numbers and letters after her name, which is in reference to her genetics file. It sounds like your system has files installed in two different locations: My Documents, and the C : drive. Try navigating to the following location:
Documents\Docking Station\My Worlds\(NAME OF WORLD)\Genetics
Hopefully this helps! I'm not sure of the program you mentioned, but perhaps someone else knows what it is. Good luck figuring out what's wrong!

First of all, thank you for such a quick reply! And... holy fudge, it's you. It seems you're always fixing my problems.
Also, I'm sorry I didn't specify more things (like the game I was using.) I really shouldn't post things at 1am after hours of google searches.
Lastly, my computer sure saves things in weird places. I checked the folders of both the my documents creatures folder and the programs files folder, and it wasn't in either. However, searching my computer for the monkier (that's the numbers and letters thing, right? Hope I'm using that correctly) came up with the .gen. Geez, seeing all the weird places my computer puts the files makes me wonder how the game runs at all! |

No problem! I was actually awake in the middle of the night, thanks to a CO alarm that apparently needed new batteries. Genius me couldn't figure out how to get the battery compartment open... But I digress!
I'm glad you were able to find the genetic file, but that certainly is strange that you have files all over the place! Then again, it seems to be a common thread when installing Creatures on newer systems. If you run into any trouble deciphering the genetic code, there are plenty of genetic experts around who would definitely lend a hand! I'm still a bit rusty after taking a long break, though it's difficult to stay away from the genetics side of the game for long!

Your lessons on genetics actually helped me quite a bit. I'm not sure about everything that's going on, but I know enough to see some of the cooler mutations. For example, many of my feral run creatures get their boredom cured by eating. It's a huge minus to boredom. Some of them with this mutation have also developed an instinct to eat when bored! |
