Any idea what makes a Norn (and I mean a C3-DS Norn, since the problems with C2 Norns are well-documented) either lie down or mindlessly walk back and forth in one spot complaining about being extremely hungry and/or bored -- and especially when they've got food and toys right in front of them?!?!? I'm currently working offline in Docking Station with several other rooms attached (Gardenia, Monturrarium, Terra, and Veridia), and the odd thing is that there are one or two areas where several Norns have seemingly become stuck entirely of their own accord -- some eventually snap out of it and leave, but some have remained there and seemingly given up to the point that they starve to death. This is par for the course at present since I'm in the process of conducting a wolfling run to find individuals worthy of exporting to other games to improve the stock -- individuals capable of moving freely, learning the language, and eating/playing regularly entirely on their own. However, it's a bit frustrating when a Norn even in a monitored game just seems to give up and just sits there without eating (I refer to that as "going tharn", a shoutout to Watership Down).

Perhaps they can smell a food or toy in those areas, but can't access it?

Assuming they're CFE Norns, walking back and forth often means "I smell it, but I don't see it anywhere" and sitting down means "I just can't find what I want at all". Usually the best thing you can do is ask them what they're doing--because they'll tell you what's on their minds even if they can't actually do it.

It may turn out that they smell protein, but their instincts tell them to eat critter instead of (for example) fruit, and are ignoring the fruit because they want to eat critter goshdarnit. Other times they get "hung up" on certain behaviors, eg. learning that pushing a button reduces boredom, and you have to train them to pay attention to toys again.

If they aren't CFE Norns, all bets are off. Standard C3/DS Norns are pretty dumb. [ntongue]

In addition, there's also Eat Elevator Syndrome to worry about. If you have creatures that are just lying around, try leading them around with the hand. If they freeze in a standing position after you let them go, they're suffering from EE Syndrome - try dropping some foodstuffs in front of them to snap them out of it, or if that doesn't work slap them.

Actually, considering that none of them are CFE, some of them have proven to be fairly decent (referring primarily to the ones who have "gone tharn" for a while and then somehow managed to snap out of it and go on to lead normal, healthy lives). I'll definitely give the CFEs a try, though.

In response to Grendel Man, when I'm in a closely monitored game (I'm not at present), I usually do make an effort to tickle them when they do what they're supposed to -- especially if it's taken them a while to get on with it -- and sometimes smack them if they're being particularly inattentive since I find that usually will wake them up and get them to comply. The problem with using the Creature Remote Control agent (which I have sometimes used as a last resort) is that sometimes it works a little *too* well and then they get fixated on whatever you wanted them to do to the point that they won't stop.

Well, I installed CFE eggs for all the original breeds I typically like to use (since I can't seem to find the CFE counterparts which Creatures Wiki claims have been created for various third-party breeds I like such as the Dream Norns)...and far too many of the little buggers are still "going tharn" and simply sitting down to passively await death by slow starvation instead of making any attempt to explore another area where they might find food, or worse still remaining in an area where they already have food but just aren't eating it. Grrrrrr...

This is not a problem in my closely-monitored worlds when I can tell them what to do and give them a slap if they don't pay attention...but it's very frustrating during wolfling runs, since I sometimes come across a candidate that seems like a real winner at first which then seems almost determined to starve itself to death. This is especially true since I'm softhearted and tend to do relaxed wolfling runs in which I make certain to fill all the areas with plenty of food and toys so that they have a decent chance of survival (little ingrates!)

The odd thing is that this time around, I took several creatures which I "cloned" because they had done fairly well in previous wolfling runs and then put them together in one place...but the results weren't nearly as good as I had anticipated they would be. Now that I think about it, it's possible that at least some of these are from runs which I conducted prior to installing the CFE eggs -- which would help explain why some of them are so stupid -- but I had "cloned" them originally because they seemed relatively intelligent (or at least able to avoid starving themselves, damn it)...

I would definitely try the Magic Words Room Edits to see if the different levels are smell-linked together properly. If they're not, the smell won't travel down through the lift shaft and norns won't know to go up or down a level to find food. I've posted up a few CFE norns on my TCR page - I hope this helps. :)
