Hello all!
As you may or may not know, I have started a series of genetic analysis on my blog called City 30, based on a wolfing run to test an updated City Norn genome that grew to around Generation 30.
I am still learning about the genetics in Creatures 3 so this thread is going to be me posting various strange and wonderful mutations and asking for help in deciphering exactly what they mean! Any help I get will of course be creditted on my blog (and I am sure that credit will be richly deserved!).
Here is my first confusing mutation:
304 Original 74 0 You B MutDupCut 128 0 Organ# = 17, Creature, Circulatory, Floating receptor/emitter 17, chem=Stress (Anger), thresh=128, nom=0, gain=254, features=Digital (0)
304 Mutation 74 0 You B MutDupCut 128 0 Organ# = 17, Brain, 01: verb, Cell 4 (come) - state 1, chem=Stress (Anger), thresh=128, nom=0, gain=254, features=Digital (0)
Does this mean that this norn gains stress any time they move towards something?

First off, next time you want to ask something about a receptor or emitter you might want to say which one it is - I actually had to look at a norn genome to see which gene you were talking about. Apart from putting them in different categories, Gene Compare doesn't do much to distinguish between the two.
Anyway, this is a receptor you're talking about, so your answer is "no." Instead, a sufficient quantity of "Stress (Anger)" will instead fire the "Come" neurone in the norn's Verb lobe instead. The effect is similar to the norn having the hand say "come" all the time when it's sufficiently stressed.
Will it affect the norn at all? I don't know, since I've never really noticed the effects of stress on C3/DS creatures, but it seems pretty harmless.

Ah sorry, I didn't realise receptor genes and emitter genes look so alike in Gene Compare. I'll remember that for next time.
That's a really bizarre mutation! Now you've explained it, I think I get it.
Thankfully I don't think this mutation will have harmed this norn too badly - it may have been activated but City Norns have few issues with crowding and no grendels or ettins were present (it was a DS-only world). Any danger from following others around should have been mitigated... unless this norn's high anger caused them to lash out a lot in which case he or she may have been something of a pain for the others!
Thank you very much for your help, Grendel Man!

Could anyone help to clarify a few things about pose genes?
I have been using the following Creatures Developer Network page to make sense of pose genes and pose mutations: CDN Link
The norn I am analysing had the following mutation:
594 City Norn 59 0 Emb B MutDupCut 128 0 Pose 36 (Express hunger) = 1 4 0 2 1 2 2 1 2 0 2 0 2 X X X
594 Mutation 59 0 Emb B MutDupCut 128 0 Pose 36 (Express hunger) = 1 4 0 2 1 2 2 1 2 0 2 0 2 X Y X
I am having problems understanding:
- Why are there 16 characters? The CDN post mentions a 15 character string.
- Y is not listed as a character used in poses
- Neither is 4, which has been used here for the head. This 4 has come directly from the Chichi genome (gene 589 on the Chichi) and I have no idea what it means
Information on the pose genes beyond what was listed in the CDN article is rather hard to find so I'm hoping someone will know something about it here!

I have another question and this time it's about a CFE gene edit.
532 CFE 56 0 Emb B MutDupCut 128 0 I have said need (20) causes sig=0 GS neu=0 int=0, Modulate,,,32 => -6*Anger + -4*Crowded + 0*[none] + 0*[none]
This gene shows the edit to creatures expressing. I have a couple of questions:
- What does modulation do?
- The reaction to expressing is set to quiescent. A kind anonymous poster to my blog explained that the quiescent reaction should make a creature lie down and do nothing. Is this correct? When I observe CFE norns who express, they stop and express if I ask them to and otherwise go about their business without obvious pauses when they speak so I am unsure.
Thanks for any help you can give me in clarifying these two points. ![[nsmile] [nsmile]](/images/smilies/emot_smile.gif)

Quiesce as a creature action makes them lie down, but as a modification to a stimuli gene it does something else entirely, which I don't understand. I think it's something about how the stimming is handled if the stimuli is repeated, or something like that.
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |
