Does anyone have any recommendations as to what the best software would be to use when recording creatures games?
So far I've tried Camstudio, but it doesn't work properly and the video always stutters when I play it back, and I've also used Camtasia but the trial period ran out and I don't want to download it again. |

I've been using Bandicam for all of my Creatures videos. I highly recommend it! The free version forces you to have a Bandicam watermark across the top of any video and also limits each video to a maximum of 10 minutes, but I haven't run into any issues with this. I use Windows Live Movie Maker to combine clips when I need to go over 10 minutes. There are lots of options when using it, too, and I've been very impressed with it!
The only minor issue I've run into is that sometimes the video recording and/or sound doesn't work when I first start it up. I blame it on my computer, though: A quick 5-10 second test video before I dive in does the trick!
Good luck: I hope this means some Creatures videos from you soon!

Fraps is what I use, and love to death and couldn't live without it, but you have to pay for it if you don't want half-size videos and annoying watermarks. But it's the only game-recording software I've worked with that never has any problem recording the game-sound. Granted, I have a rather complex setup with my videos-- I record the video/game sound with fraps, then record any audio narration in another bit of software so I have the game sound and my narration on two separate tracks for better volume adjustment and easy editing if I decide to rearrange what I'm saying, cut parts out, etc.
But the big thing is that I do all my editing in Adobe Premiere-- that makes it super-easy to crop video too. If I didn't have that, I might forsake fraps for a software option that allowed me to record certain portions of the screen instead of the full game window. I just really dislike having the DS top-left UI thing or the side pull-out menus showing up in my videos, personally (although newer versions of windows movie maker might allow for cropping anyway? I haven't used it in forever).
Jessica's option is going to be your cheapest bet, still, but I figured I'd share my preferences too :>

There's one in DVDVideoSoft. I used to use CamStudio too.
