Right-Click Help on Agents

My exploration of CAOS has led to the realization that a lot of COBs have help files built in that are supposed to show up when you right-click on them in "help" mode. Mine never do, even when the README file says they should. The help screen just says,

Sadly we don't know exactly what this unknown agent is! But we do know its classifiers...

Is there something in my setup I can fix to get the help files to show, or am I SOL?

The "unknown agent" message is the default for "no help file exists," essentially. Meaning either the readme lied, or the agent never extracted the catalogue files into the right folders (You might want to test your game for that).

If that's your problem, you can try reinstalling the game to your My Documents folder, or figure out where they're getting extracted to and move them over manually (kind of a pain IMO, I would recommend the former, despite it being annoying, at least it's a one-time annoyance)!

Oh, noooo, moving manually sounds ever so much better--I hate messing with the installation! I'm running in a VMWare Fusion Windows XP installation on my MacBook Air...it took me days to get it all working, and is 'way too easy to break. I've had to coax it back to life every other time I've exited the program, so I just leave it running now and hope nothing crashes it and the system doesn't decide to do a software update/restart when I'm not looking!

I'll check the catalog files, now that I know where to look. I don't think ALL the COB makers could be lying about their help files. ;) Thanks!

With Win7 and Vista all files from inside an agent are placed in MyDocuments, the game can read sounds and sprites from there but not catalogues, so they have to be moved to the install directory (usually C:\Programm Files\Gameware Development\Creatures 3\Catalogue); I have made a shortcut in the catalogue directory inside MyDocuments leading to the catalogue directory inside Programm files, and the first thing I do whenever I inject a new agent is moving the catalogue.

I've never heard of it happening to someone in Vista, actually. Although I started running my game as administrator years ago to reduce issues, it didn't do anything like that before, either.

I'm actually not entirely convinced its a windows thing so much as maybe a weird Exodus thing (or maybe a combo, I dunno). Because I know I never had the issue in C3 or DS standalone, it wasn't until I started using Exodus that the problem showed up-- even when running WinXP (which was -really- strange). But I experienced it through all three versions of Windows, and installing to the documents folder solved the problem for me in all cases.

But I dunno, that's just my experience. I almost want to conduct a massive poll of creatures versions/windows versions to see if we can nail down the exact cause of this; it seems so hit and miss.
