Hi!
I used to play Creatures Exodus a while ago on a computer with Windows XP, but I recently changed to a Windows 7 computer.
I first installed the game and had a problem with the update that prevented me from running the game. I found the solution to use engine.exe, but I still decided to reinstall the game.
Though, the problem is that now, it doesn't even ask me anymore if I want to make an update, but rather tell me that maybe I'm not connected to the Internet or the server isn't working, so I can't connect to play in my worlds online. However, I still have my old computer and the server seems to be working fine on it, so I don't understand why it can't work on my new computer. I tried to replace the server.cfg file, but it doesn't work neither.
I would like to know if there is a solution to this problem or if the server is really down (which it does not seem to be on my other computer).
Thanks in advance! |

Is this in the actual game or in the Installshield.exe that asks to update? |

Welcome to the forums Tirose
You can download the working version of the game (unless you have the more up the date, paid version from GOG.com), and a patch to play offline when the server is down from www.creaturesdockingstation.com.
Deleting server.cfg should allow the game to replace it with an up to date copy, if the server is online at the time.
If that still doesn't work you'll have to let us know each step the game gets to when loading.

Thanks for your answers!
I finally was able to make my game work again.
Deleting the server.cfg file didn't seem to have any effect, but since everything worked well on my other computer, I opened its own server.cfg file with notepad and copied its content into the server.cfg file on my new computer. It worked perfectly! I still don't know why I needed to do that since I had never needed to touch this file on my old computer, but it worked perfectly and that's the only thing that matters. It now seems that I can now access the server correctly.
Thanks anyway for trying to help me! It's really appreciated. |

I'm having the same issues you were having Tirose, except I don't have an old computer/install to fix my server file with. I'm also on Windows 7 and I can't seem to log in to register a world, even though the servers appear to be working for other people.
Could you, or someone else who has an older server.cfg file, upload it somewhere so I can test it out to see if a faulty config file is to blame? |

Mine, when dragged into Notepad, is:
"Server 0 FriendlyName" TweedleDee
"Server 0 Host" 81.174.139.142
"Server 0 ID" 1
"Server 0 Port" 49152
"Server 1 FriendlyName" Virtual
"Server 1 Host" 81.174.139.142
"Server 1 ID" 11
"Server 1 Port" 49152
"Server 2 FriendlyName" Virtual
"Server 2 Host" 81.174.139.142
"Server 2 ID" 50
"Server 2 Port" 49152
"Server Count" 3

Thank you very much! I replaced the text in my config file with this and now I can register worlds.
My server.cfg file was pointed at heart.creatures.net, which afaik has the same IP address as these here but there is other information in your file that mine didn't have. Whatever the difference once, it was fixed by copying this information. |

Hm, I don't appear to even have a server.cfg file. I don't know how to make one either. |

It is a simple text file you can create with Notepad.
Open Notepad, copy-paste the stuff Don posted and save the file.
Afterwards you rename it from .txt to .cfg
Lets play plants! Photosynthesis... Photosynthesis... Photosynthesis... |

Sounds simple enough. Thanks. |

Wow, that was awesome. I've been thinking there's something wrong with the servers, and I couldn't get online with the game. But you saved me, Don. My hero! Thank you.
ETA: Step-by-step
I got it to work on my computer, and perhaps this step by step "tutorial" will help someone else:
I opened my DS folder, found a file named "server.cfg" and opened it with wordpad (notepad works just as well or even better). And then I replaced all the text with
"Server 0 FriendlyName" TweedleDee
"Server 0 Host" 81.174.139.142
"Server 0 ID" 1
"Server 0 Port" 49152
"Server 1 FriendlyName" Virtual
"Server 1 Host" 81.174.139.142
"Server 1 ID" 11
"Server 1 Port" 49152
"Server 2 FriendlyName" Virtual
"Server 2 Host" 81.174.139.142
"Server 2 ID" 50
"Server 2 Port" 49152
"Server Count" 3
and saved. Then I started a new world in DS, and clicked the orange button at the top left corner (right underneath where you get the selected norn's face) and got connected.
If you can't find the server.cfg file, I've uploaded mine so you can get it from here: http://www.winterblades.org/server.cfg
Just save it right into your DS folder (if asked to replace another file, click "Yes" .
Hope it helps. If it does, we'll see each other through the warp. |

When I try to save the server file, I get the error that "Word cannot save or create this file. Make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected, or damaged. (C ...\Docking Station\server.cfg.cfg)
Also, do not understand what to do after following the link of the above post..."just save it right into your DS folder"? How? |

Hey, so, I've done everything that's listed here, followed the step-by-step, and I still can't seem to make a new world. I go into the DS folder, delete the old server.cfg, make a new one in notepad using -exactly- what was posted here, this
"Server 0 FriendlyName" TweedleDee
"Server 0 Host" 81.174.139.142
"Server 0 ID" 1
"Server 0 Port" 49152
"Server 1 FriendlyName" Virtual
"Server 1 Host" 81.174.139.142
"Server 1 ID" 11
"Server 1 Port" 49152
"Server 2 FriendlyName" Virtual
"Server 2 Host" 81.174.139.142
"Server 2 ID" 50
"Server 2 Port" 49152
"Server Count" 3
and when I go to make a register my new world by entering my un and pw, it seems to instantly overwrite the new server.cfg that I made with the same old one, this
"Server 0 FriendlyName" Heart
"Server 0 Host" heart.creatures.net
"Server 0 ID" 1
"Server 0 Port" 49152
"Server Count" 1
anyone have a possible explanation for this? |

I got that, too. Does anyone know why the InstallShield has a new dsbuild. I know it doesn't work but it went from being: "" to "<html>". Are they doing work to the server due to the revival of the Creatures series or is that just a glitch.

It sounds like an issue with you running C3/DS via installblast.exe, and not engine.exe. Grendel Man answered this perfectly in a previous thread:
Grendel Man wrote: The best idea, I think, is simply ignore any messages about updates (there isn't any, obviously) and change your shortcuts so they bypass the update check.
To do this, right-click on your desktop shortcut/main menu link/whatever and select "properties." Underneath "target," you'll see a file path - it should read something along the lines of "X: \Program Files\Docking Station\InstallBlast.exe." Change "InstallBlast.exe" to "engine.exe" (without quotations, of course).
Hope this helps you out!

Well that certainly fixed my issue! Now I don't have to deal with that installer every time I try to play!
