Before my younger sister found a medium-sized, black spider with orange markings on it's abdomen attached to her bike. I managed to knock the spider off with a stick, but I am now wondering what species it was.
I originally thought it was a False Widow but it wasn't the right colour. Could it have been a deadly Black Widow Spider? It is also worth noting the weather has been hot these past few days. |

I don't remember exactly, but I think they were small orange blobby stripes going sideways across its abdomen. They weren't big stripes either. |

Black widows generally have a red hourglass on the front of their abdomen, IIRC. |

It was long and thin, not bulbous like that of a Black Widow. |

Did it resemble any of the ones on this site? It lists two kinds of false widows.

I can handle pictures of spiders online... But put me in a room with a live spider, and I don't know what happens to me! I think it stems from an incident when I was around thirteen: I took a nap on the couch with a blanket, and when I got up, a huge spider crawled out of the blanket. Still makes me cringe! There was also the time I was doing homework wrapped in a different blanket, and a big spider somehow crawled up it onto my hand.
Moral of the story: Blankets and spiders don't mix!

@Malkin I'm sorry but none of the False Widows on that page looked anything like the spider I found. Maybe it could be a new species? |

Probably not, but it might be some kind of an exotic spider. Could it have been an Australian Funnel-web? Here's an image of one and it looks sort of like what you described. I don't know how it would have gotten to the UK however. |

I looked at that picture along with a few other Funnel-Webs but it definitely isn't one of those; its body wasn't as fat and its head wasn't as prominent.
Its also worth mentioning that my mum found a black spider with a white marking on its back a couple of years back in some grapes we had bought. After doing some research it turns out it was actually a juvenile Redback Spider. :0 |
