| Can't Change Appearance Genes? | |

Ok, so this is actually more convoluted than simply changing the appearance genes in a genome, so I apologize in advance.
To be brief, what I'm trying to do is test a C3/DS genome that uses specific sprites. However, I can't get the Genetics Kit to cooperate with my copy of DS to a point where it'll inject an egg with the genome in it, and I doubt I can get an egg agent creator to work with the game given my Windows 7 setup.
So what I've been TRYING to do, as a last-ditch effort, is save my genome over the pre-existing genome of a pre-existing creature (or breed, depending on what I'm trying) and hoping for the best. However, I'm finding that when I replace the pre-existing genomes the creature's appearance doesn't actually change. Even when I replace the genome for an egg agent (created using this web site), the newly born creature still comes out looking like the originally designated breed.
Before the obvious is pointed out, I can't simply use the aforementioned web site to set the appearance genes to the correct breed because I'm using C12DS sprites, which the web site doesn't list as options for its genomes.
So, two questions:
1) Out of morbid curiosity, what's preventing the game from acknowledging the new genome file?
and
2) How do I actually test this genome in DS? Is there some sort of CAOS command I can use to manually inject an egg carrying it?
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

1) I think some of the newer game versions overwrite genomes every time the egg file or agent is used. Don't know exactly how it works but I'm sure it happens in GOG C2.
2) There must be a CAOS code as there are agents which do this. Probably simpler to just use one of those. Here is a link to download JayD's egg maker for DS. Keep the filenames short. |

Yes, everytime an agent is used it tries to unpack it's self. You can make an egg agent without a genome file being compiled with it, and that would allow you to replace endlessly without it occasionally replacing the file.
But it seems you have it all worked out.

ElasticMuffin's mirror of liveGMS can also create an egg agent from a genome.

As for the failure to inject the genome with the genetics kit, you could try running the editor as an administrator.
The CAOS Tool has a similar problem where it refuses to inject CAOS code directly unless you run it as admin. Most likely this is Windows 7 preventing programs to interact without permission, so the solution could work for the Genetics Kit as well.

Yes. Not sure how Win7 works exactly, but in Vista, you need both programs to be run as admin for them to communicate. If one is and the other isn't, they won't be able to interact.

In Win 7 as far as I know you don't need UAC approval, nor you need to have admin rights for that. At least that's what works for me.

In my experience the genetics kit only injects into C3, not DS.
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |

Um, no, it is supposed to work with DS. I was using it well before I got C3.

Yeah, I was able to inject eggs into DS when I had the programs installed on my laptop running XP, so I know the kit is compatible with that game under the right circumstances.
Thank you to everyone who responded to my OP. I got everything sorted out, but I'll keep the other tips in mind to try to get everything "properly" connected again later on.
