Does C1/2 run with Dos?
Not really, you need Windows 95/98 (where it was designed for) in order to run it. Windows 9x versions are technically just MS-DOS systems with an GUI running on the top of it.
For the emulation of them you can use Microsoft Windows Virtual PC (which is only available for Professional editions of Windows), or VMware (which sadly isn't completely free, but you have a limited free version available).
VirtualBox is an Open Source and free visualization suite, but doesn't support very well (yet).
You can try it on a Windows XP machine with all updates applied to the game, or on a old computer with Windows 95/98/Me.
But I have to say personally that the GOG.com version isn't bad, and that I use it frequently when playing Creatures 1/2 or the Albian Years.
