How do GOG versions compare?

I'm considering buying the Albian Years or Creatures Village from GOG, but I've heard a few people talk about problems relating to crashing, missing music, et cetera, and I'd like to know a little bit about how the GOG versions compare to the original games.

What kinds of problems do the GOG versions suffer from, if any? Did they do a good job of fixing problems in the original game, or just add to them? Is crashing still an issue? With C2 especially, the original game let me play maybe 3-5 hours in a world before completely breaking down. Does the GOG version still do that, or has it been fixed?

I don't have any problems with the GOG.com versions. Actually, the problems with the originals are solved. The only issue I have is the music problem you described, but this seems to be a problem with the new default MIDI controller in Windows which is incompatible. :)

As Far I know,
The G.O.G ones are based on the xp version of the creature series,
yet I heard that there may be some things that may be fixed.

I really can't say much as I don't have the G.O.G ones,
I do have the original ones and the xp version..

On creaturetopia I did list what probs the Xp release have,so
If you manage to get the Gog and find similarness in the probs I had with the Xp,then I guess that tells.. XD

Otherwise if the probs I had with the xp dosn't show up on the GOG ones..then I guess I am going to end up buying it at some point X_x

As for the CA background music *Midi* Is a prob for the Xp version as well ( + missing the parental control wich allowed you to adjust sound and music volym) So Im unsure if thats the case O.o'

I've been running the GOG versions lately, and I haven't noticed any problems. There's a few bugs I've seen, but nothing gamebreaking - and i suspect they might have kept these in for the nostalgia factor ( telekinesis anyone? :P ) I've not run them for an extended time yet, but as none of the worlds have totally imploded on me YET, i'm hoping my Albias won't implode.

If it's relevant, I'm running them on my Windows 7 laptop.

I run Windows Vista and I've only found two issues with GOG's The Albian Years, more specifically Creatures 1:

1.) The Emergency Kit doesn't work. However, the Health Kit, the Breeder's Kit and the Hatchery seem to replenish themselves when the stocks/eggs run out, and you can reset your world by going to the main Creatures 1 directory (Program Files/GOG.com/Creatures Albian Years/Creatures 1), deleting World.sfc and then making a copy of Eden.sfc and renaming it World.sfc.

2.) Trying to open the Health Kit causes an error. However running Creatures 1 in Adminstrator Mode gets it working.

The GOG version of Creatures 2 runs like a dream in my experience, and I've also had no trouble with GOG's Creatures Exodus. I hope this is of some use to you. :)

Okay, I always hated resurrecting two-week-old posts, but it's on the front page, so I might as well not make a second one.

With the GOG version of of Creatures Exodus, do you still have to switch to 16-bit color? Also, do they function on 64-bit versions of Windows 7? Does anyone know any of these things?

I have to switch to 16-bit color when running GOG's Creatures Exodus, and some people have reported it working fine on 64-bit Windows 7 here - if that's any help?

Interesting... In any case, it runs on 7, so that saves me from having to fiddle with VirtualBox. I'll look into grabbing it whenever I get the money to do so; definitely worth $10 to not have to boot a separate operating system every time I want to play. :P

Thank you!
