| Guide to running C2 on Vista | |

Well, I searched a whole lot on the internet to try and figure out how to do this, and didn't find much.
So for those who are still having troubles with running C2 on Vista, I thought I would write a step by step guide so those who are not good with computers can follow it.
What this basically does is create a version of Windows 2000 or 98 running IN Vista, so no need to dual boot or anything.
1. Download Virtual PC 2007 (google it) and install it
2. Download a Windows 98 or 2000 VHD (virtual hard drive). I can't tell you where to get one of these, but as a hint, try searching for it on youtube... (don't get windows 95)
3. Run Virtual PC 2007 and you will get a little console window. Press New.
4. Press Next, select Create a virtual machine. Press Next and type a name.
5. In the next few windows, select Windows 2000 and use default ram, then use existing vhd
6. browse and find your vhd you downloaded earlier.
7. If all goes well, select your Windows version in the Virtual PC console and start it.
8. On the top menu, go to Action->Install or update blah blah.
9. Click continue, and the additions should install automatically (if not go into My Comptuer on the Virtual PC and install it from the disk/floppy drive). It will want to restart, that's fine.
9. Put your Creatures 2 disk in the drive.
10. Log in to Windows etc and open My Computer
11. If your Creatures CD does not appear in the virtual disk drive, go to CD at the top menu and select "Use Drive E:"
12. Install Creatures like you would normally.
13. If you want to install the C2 addons, download them in your native Windows (Vista) and put them all in a folder. While your Virtual PC is running, go to the console and click Settings. Go to Shared Folders and add the folder where your addons are saved. Then open My Computer in your virtual PC, go to the drive with that folder in, and install as normal.
14. Run C2 as normal in the Virtual PC through Start->Programs->Creatures 2 (or however you installed it)!
For those using Daemon Tools for the CD, start up DT beforehand, insert the Creatures disk, and the CD menu should have an option to use that 'CD drive' instead.
If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask. Spread this around anywhere you want as well, it makes me sad to think some people can't run C2 (my fav one!) |

sound like a neat guide,i might give it a go (im lucky to have a win xp wich i run my original c2 (and albian years on) (and also a win me (but my dll files on that one have flipped a bit ^^' ),
I do have a win vista (wcih i hate )and, like you said, had no luck with finding any hints of running c2 (without making some risky chances on regediting ^^' )
this might give a light of hope for running c2 on vista, even if it might be a longer progress, rather then put in cd,install and run :3
thanx for the guide ^^
*crosses fingers it will work when trying it out when having time) |

this is so awesome, do you mind if I duplicate it for the CCSF website?
... which I need to fix today? |

VirtualBox does a pretty good job of emulating hardware as well, if you have a spare Windows XP CD laying about but you're not willing to wipe Vista and replace it (or find a virtual drive with XP on it through less scrupulous methods which you shouldn't do because it's not nice!). I used it to emulate Windows 3.1 out of boredom a couple weeks ago. It's also great for playing with Ubuntu on when I get bored :3 The instructions for installing and running it are very similar to Virtual PC 2007--create a virtual drive through its wizard, install the desired OS onto the emulated computer, and then pop whatever you want onto it. |

Starscream and Laura, feel free - I'm glad you both think it's useful!
And yep as Steelfoot says, VirtualBox probably also works, but I've never tried it myself. Looks good on its website though, so people should definitely give it a try if Virtual PC doesn't work very well.
Thanks all |

Meh, C2 under VirtualBox doesn't seem to work with either Windows 98 or XP; in Windows 98 it complains about not having the right drivers, and in Windows XP it complains about running out of video memory even if you configure it to have a huge amount. I know it runs fine under vmware, so I'm off to install that now (no Virtual PC for us Linux users!). Don't know if anyone has any other suggestions? |

Windows 2000 won't let me extract without a password.

VirtualBox is great, I just use C2 (and other titles) without problems.

Just a quick FYI that the Good Old Games version of Creatures 2 runs great under Vista and friends

Will these method work on Win 7?? I have a desktop computer with Windows 7 that can't run C2, but it runs C1 well. Mostly I play C2 on my laptop with XP, but is there any way to play C2 on Win 7?

I'd say that The Albian Years from GOG.com would be the way to go to get C2 working on Windows 7. Their version is compatible with newer operating systems. |

Some people said me that already. GoG is simply too much for me. The only thing I want to know: can I run C2 on Win 7 if I didn't bought them on GoG, but in Croatia?

I think GOG.com is the only place to download those compatible versions, currently. |
