What is with everyone and Harry Potter? It is not all that great of a book. Also, where's the lasting value? Non-exisistent. |

Did I understand you right? LotR is more realistic than HP? I think they books/movies is about the same (only grade of reallity, not the story).

No, you didn't. I simply said that LoTR has more lasting value than HP. There are more things though. |

LOTR has something like a fifty year head start on Harry Potter for the 'lasting value' stakes... It's not really fair to compare them like that yet.
I've recently been re-reading the first volume of the Guin Saga, and it is very swords-and-sandals epic. I would not go so far as to say it's my favourite book, because I can't decide which are my favourites, but it's certainly very enjoyable and satisfying.
I'd also like to add that for all those fans of Tamora Pierce, you might also like to try Isobelle Carmody and Sophie Masson.

I've never been able to understand LoTR. I understand Hobbit though. Mostly, I just see "And Vangurl went to the Auk'Nor in order to retrieve the Sam Sam Suma for his bride Fenven, who had a baby Zeur with her lover Zemga."
Sorry, but I get words mixed up enough as it is. It's just my humble opinion. And I don't feel any reason to care about the characters, whereas with Harry Potter I'm with the same characters throughout the book, they're doing more than just trying to destroy Voldemort, and I can get attached to them. Sorry LoTR fans, but I just can't get into them.
As for my favorite books:
The Bartimaeus Trilogy.

Well obviously your feeble mind can't comprehend the vast writing talent of J.R.R. Tolkien. HP is so negative and repugnant. Like brownies with dog excrement in them, would you eat them?
I'm just kidding about your feeble mind. And I'm glad your back! ^^ |

Hogfather has to be my favorite Terry Pratchett Book.
There's another book, part of a series, that I'm getting into, but my brain is dead and I can't remember the name.... it involves a species called Gars, slaves to a sort of anthropomorphic cat species.... MY BRAIN. D:
Thief Lord
Inkheart
and Dragonspell

KC, I went to a bookshop today and looked at the back cover blurb for Inkheart... I found it singularly ungrabbinating. How come it's one of your favourite books?
A book I re-read annually is The Scarlet Pimpernel... He is the prototypical James Bond and superhero rolled into one, and it's got a healthy dash of romance too.

Well, it's been awhile since I've read it, so maybe I'll have a different opinion of it now. Try reading a few chapters. Sometimes the worst blurbs can be taken.

The blurb was like a summary of the plot, not a quote. I found it ungrabbinating, "magic of reading" kind of stuff, so I thought I'd ask you why you liked it, to find out if it's something I might like enough to borrow from the library.

^Oh.
Well, again, I can't really tell, since I need to read the books again. But I do remember the movie (lol, I saw the book, so I don't need to read the movie! ) and that was very entertaining. They did a nice job on it.
Basically, I'm just a fan of that sort of fantasy stuff.

Fair enough. An early favourite of mine (one that I've managed to keep away from ravages of 'let's give away all your old books!'...) is a version of the Arthurian legends, with a sympathetic Morgan (and a silly-looking Merlin). I read The Mists of Avalon, because I heard it was good, and it is good, addictive even, but it's rather enthusiastic about portraying all Christianity as evil. Also, the sequels are worse.
