I live and breathe writing. It's become my life other than being a geek who spends too many hours on the computer each day. As such, my mom has found patterns in how I view things when I read: how is the story being laid out? How does this author move from key plot points? Does he or she present the details in a way that makes it clear?

I've become a creative story writer and storyteller over the past several months, and now I find that I truly want to become an author someday. Even my giggly companions at Homeschool Workshop think that I should use writing as a profession. Both they and my mother are recommending OCSHA: a special school for the creative students.

But the hard truth is that I'm absolutely terrified to try out for the writing class.

Seriously, though, very professional writers will be examining my? a panicking thirteen-year-old's?work, and I'm truly mortified at the thought of them actually reading my stories. My mother has the utmost confidence in my work, and my friends keep urging me to give it a go, but the thought is too frightening for me to bear.

I'm doomed. :( I don't feel confident at all. Does anyone know how I can get past all my ridiculous teenage angst (I blame hormones) and find enough assurance that I actually stand a chance to become a student?

I say go for it!! :) I don't know much about OCSHA or your writing skills, but I do know this much: if you want something badly enough, you'll find a way to get it. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it, and I truly believe that.

The final question that it boils down to is: If you were to try and fail, what would you have lost? And if you try and succeed, how much will you gain? I think the answer is clear. :)

Best of luck!! Keep us updated.

On a side note, I have been applying for very competitive internships during the summer and it can be very discouraging. But at the end of the day, it's definitely better to have tried and not succeeded than to have never tried at all! Every time I go to an interview I remind myself that even if I don't get the position, at least I will have more experience in interview performance which will help me be a better candidate at my next interview. Be positive. :)

Yes. Do it. Trust me, it will be the best experience of your life.

This summer, I went off to CSSSA. Sent off the application. Got in. Met some of the best friends I have ever had. It really was a life changing experience for me.

Throughout all the camp, however, I was so worried because, well, a lot of the students were older than me, more "professional" than I was. I was worried I would be seen as some little kid following everyone.

But I slowly grew out of it, when I recieved the great comments on my work and the encouragment from the other students. I really felt happy. I mean, we were all crying when we left.

So go for it! You never know when you might meet your best friend for life, or at least your future publicist. :)

I'm afraid of applying to vet school. The competition is insane, the workload is frightening...

but if you don't apply then they can't pick you, can they?

Besides, isn't your competition students your age who want to get into that program? So don't worry about seasoned professionals going through your work. They're not comparing you to themselves, they're comparing you to people your age and how your work stands out.

Give it a shot. If you don't get in, there are plenty of other programs you can try for. Why the hell not?

Yes, I'm the forum [devil]... Any questions?

This. And I say this as someone who applied to a very competitive screen writing program at a private university and didn't get in. At least I know I tried; I think it would have been much worse in the long run if I hadn't made the attempt at all.

I've seen the stuff you've posted here, and if it's anything to go by, then you definitely have a fighting chance at getting into this writing program.

You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

If I try and fail, I'm likely going to end up going to Woodbridge for at least the first year of my high school education. That's just a plain-old regular school, and I know from experience that I don't mesh well with "normal" kids.

If I try and succeed, I can get over the fact that OCSHA has nine-hour school days, hopefully make a friend or two, and get some help and counseling from artists like me on how I can improve on my writing and accomplish my goal of becoming an author someday.

I feel a lot better after reading this. xD My mother is going to take me to a little "parent-teacher chat" about applying for OCSHA, since my teacher is very experienced at getting homeschooled 8th graders into the high school of their choice.

I quite believe you, KC11. ^^ Are you going to a similar school? (I ask this merely because the link was to a summer school.)

Thank you very much, officer. :') *salutes* And those were from a couple months ago, so I feel especially proud now. x)

My only fear now is the difficulty of this course. The competition (it is told) gets a little worse every year, and usually people who are in 10th or 11th grade apply for Writings. >_> That more recent news has made me a little more panicky.

But I will try. At least I'll have more experience, and OCSHA allows you to try applying once a year; even if I fail this time around, I'll have a second chance for 10th grade. :D

Lol... my mom was reading this over my shoulder. XD I hope you get into the position of your choice, Rascii, and good luck with getting into vet school, angel. :)

I actually just got an e-mail saying I was rejected for the fifth internship that I've applied for. Ah well. I will continue applying until I get one!!! It gets me down sometimes but you have to dust yourself off and keep on trying.

Very true. Good luck, Dreamnorn--and don't worry. They don't expect you to be absolutely perfect or to know everything, that's why they're going to teach you after all!

Once again, I wish you good luck! Hopefully the next one you apply for will accept you. ^^

...Come to think of it, if I really do become an author some day, I'll be rejected hundreds of times until a very generous publisher agrees to make my manuscript public. Applying for OCSHA seems like cake in comparison for getting a script published.

Getting into a school is one thing; having a book revealed to the whole country is on a much larger scale. o.O'

For some reason, I'm now ridiculously happy. x)

...Oh my gosh, I just realized that. XD *stupid*

I guess that's one of the downsides to being thirteen... naivety. Oh, well. They probably don't expect more with my age and all. >.>'

Just go for it- you never know until you give it a go!

There's some great advice in this thread though. I myself have been swithering over applying for a Masters but I don't know if I'm good enough. Won't know until I try I guess.

I agree with everyobdy else in this thread. From my own experience of applying to university and also applying for jobs - you have to keep trying and keep applying to get anywhere. :)

Thanks all. ^^

Okay... I have my folder packed, and my works are starting to be edited. Half of my family AND my writing tutor AND my English teacher will all look at it for edits. I guess I don't have anything to worry about except the interview now. D:

Oh snap... my interview is in a few weeks! :o How do I go there in a way that makes them see me, in my real character, as a potential student?

I'm sorry; when I'm overworked and frazzled, I want a lot of reassurance. >_> *flees*
