Beata Maria
You know I am a righteous man
Of my virtue I am justly proud
Beata Maria
You know I'm so much purer than
The common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd
Then tell me, Maria
Why I see her dancing there
Why her smold'ring eyes still scorch my soul
I feel her, I see her
The sun caught in raven hair
Is blazing in me out of all control
Like fire
Hellfire
This fire in my skin
This burning
Desire
Is turning me to sin
It's not my fault
I'm not to blame
It is the gypsy girl
The witch who sent this flame
It's not my fault
If in God's plan
He made the devil so much
Stronger than a man
Protect me, Maria
Don't let this siren cast her spell
Don't let her fire sear my flesh and bone
Destroy Esmeralda
And let her taste the fires of hell
Or else let her be mine and mine alone
Hellfire
Dark fire
Now gypsy, it's your turn
Choose me or
Your pyre
Be mine or you will burn
God have mercy on her
God have mercy on me
But she will be mine
Or sheeeeeee wiiiiiiil buuuuuuuuuuuuuurn!
-----------
that is all, carry on.
actually props to people that are not Laura that can tell me where this lovely song is from

This is my favorite song out of Disney. Period. And next to Scar, Frollo's my favorite villain.
I wish I owned the movie. Stupid Disney Vault, separating me from potential DVD purchases. >=(
ETA: Right. Discussion. When I saw this movie in theaters, it... really disturbed me. Even at my age I could tell exactly what Frollo was after from Esmeralda, and it creeped me out at the time that Disney would actually explore that sort of theme. Now that I'm older, though, I really appreciate that Disney took the risks it did with this movie, even if they didn't pay out in the end....
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

Officer-1BDI: Probably a stupid question but have you tried eBay? I've bought a few reasonably priced Disney-Vault DVDs from there before.
One post from a long-time Frollocentric and HoND fan coming right up...
I love this song so much, especially the Confiteor recited at the beginning. The song is powerful, dark, has many undertones, and I think Disney pulled it off very well with the animated Hellfire sequence.
I actually bought 'The Art of The Hunchback of Notre Dame' (which took months to get to me from the US via surface mail! I'm a committed fan... ) just so I could see and drool over the concept art for Frollo and for Hellfire.
As you watch the sequence, you can just see the intensity of the emotions that Frollo is going through, as he's conflicted by the strict disciplines of religion and his impulses - it is religion which I think makes his desire for Esmeralda unbearable. You can just feel it intensified by the urgency in his voice, the unforgiving taunts of the chanting going on and on relentlessly, and the cruel enticing of flames roaring in the background.
Kudos to the remarkable talents of the great, late Mr. Tony Jay. His performance in this never fails to give me goosebumps.
It's a real shame, but I haven't been able to listen to this song properly since he died - I always get a lump in my throat. I still love that man. |

Oh wow. This is a Disney song? O_o 'Course, quite a few "non-child" themes have been explored in many Disney movies.... death for one (Bambi and Lion King come to mind). Many stories supposedly for children have added in adult like themes (Think: Harry Potter) so maybe this isn't all that unusual.
I actually like these older Disney movies. Pity Disney took such a childish turn.
Do not upset the ugly worm, lest it be a dragon in disguise. (>oo)>

I am guessing the Hunchback of Notre Dame? O_O I haven't seen that. You're making me want to try watching this movie. D:
These lyrics sounds like a "bad guy song".

Oh, it is quite the "bad guy" song.
Laura: I've considered ebay, actually, but I'd much rather be able to see the copy I was purchasing before going to buy it, if only so I could ensure the quality the disk's in. =P

While I agree with this, I think THoND took it to a whole new level with Frollo's one-sided obsession with Esmeralda. I mean, he basically wanted her for teh sex; he even offered her "salvation" and freedom in exchange for being with him.
And Tony Jay.... *wistful sigh* Every time a distinct voice from my childhood dies my spirit withers a little.
The animation in this movie, especially in the scene this song is from, is gorgeous. A lot of it is character expression, but there're also the rich background designs, and the creative use of effects, and the little, subtle actions that make certain scenes and dialogue "pop" (i.e., when Quasi's* singing the title lyrics from "Out There," and the Notre Dame Cathedral is in the scene, the front window flashes to reflect the sunlight, etc.). This is the brilliant 2D animation that I desperately miss seeing in theaters.
* Incidentally, Tom Hulce doesn't have a bad voice, either. =)

hehe when i watched it as a kid I was bored and never saw the end. i remember my mum crying cause she felt bad for the gypsy. She cries in movies a lot...
However, a french musical Notre Dame de Paris got me into this stuff again. I picked up the novel as a joke after listening to the musical... and then it was my favorite book ever I watched the Disney again after all that and then I developed appreciation for it.
me = HUGE Frollocentric, both book Frollo and disney Frollo

I just adore how paradoxal this song is.
Even for the barbarous state of the Christian church in the 1400s
He shuns the innocent, turns a blind eye to the needy, his bloodlust, his power hunger, and his desire.
As Laura said, his commitment to his religion makes desire unbearable. He has become unable to love because he is trapped by his religion, and unable to continue following a religious path because he has been trapped by love.
I was rewatching parts of this film recently (youtube edition, I wish I taped it when I was a child) and I was amazed at how much had gone straight over my head as a child. I wasn't particularly innocent, probably about eight by the time I saw it, so of course twigged Frollo wanted Esmeralda for sex. But exactly how horrible that was only dawned on me as I rewatched it just a few months ago. Funny how some things shock you more as you're older, eh?

I was -way- too mature a kid. I skipped childhood basically, and by the time i saw this understood and totally didn't like the creepy old man after the pretty girl thing, but loved this song. And anything the jester guy did, cos i just like jesters =D
Hmm... what other disney songs are good?
I remember... I like two from the lion king 2, maybe more but i don't remember them, and i like some of the music from brother bear, that was a cool film, and pretty original and deep in disney terms.
Off topic greatly: researching PotC led me to discovering that 'yoho, yoho, a pirates life for me' is a disney song. Dunno why, that just surprised me. It's just this generic pirate song, some little stupid part of me decided it must have been a real pirate song XD |

I noticed too... I always viewed movies --Charlotte's Web (1972), for example-- with a childish innocence until now, when I'm starting to mature, and I don't see them the same, enchanting way anymore. *sigh*
