Started last year. Still on a few chapters. I wouldn't be posting often, but I'll try my best.
Please note that I will sometimes double post if I wish to get in more chapters in. Like in the next post.
Introduction
Hi. This is the introduction to the book, and I am listening to another book while I am writing it. I sit, in my computer chair, typing this on my humble word program, and listening to ?The Prestige?.
But this is not about the environment in which I write this, nor is it about what sort of other books I take to my interest. No, this is about this book, and a bit of me thrown in the pile.
?Playing Shee? is my first real creatures book. It is not set in any game, not C1, C2, C3, DS, CV, not even C4. ?Playing Shee? is set in our game, the game of Us, the game called Earth, with its main species of Humans. It is now that two worlds collide, that those little furry critters we call norns hop out from our computer screen and into our lives, and all because of us.
Science, history, and all the matter of the unusual come into my writing, as one may have seen many times before. Stories of dragons, Borg norns acting as Nazis, and Sol 3 norns taking over all of Albia all come into my stories. This one is no different.
This story idea came to me as I was walking about my backyard, thinking about what to do. I had not written a good story in a long time, so I was thinking. It came to me as I sat down on a lawn chair: ?What if I put norns in the real world through science??
Most of my ideas come in this sort of way (other ways are through dreams and general brainstorming). The idea grew slowly, and now I write it down in my words in my effort to clear my cluttered mind.
And so now, I give you a story. This story, word by word, is what I wrote and nothing else. One day this may happen, and that day seems to be getting closer with what sciences we have now and what may come in the future. And so, now the humans are truly playing Shee, and now the story must start

Chapter 1
The Excavation
Mallory sat down and fanned herself with her cap. She was tired. And unfulfilled.
She, as well as 50 others, were at an excavation site, looking for the bones of the past. And so far all they had found were rocks and sunburns.
Mallory sighed. They had been here for three weeks, and still nothing had turned up. It wasn’t as if they hadn’t looked well enough. They were all experienced archeologists, taught in the best collages and otherwise. No, the fact was that there was simply nothing here to find.
Yet, Mallory could still feel the pulls in her mind that something, something was here. Something had to be here, her mind said. Keep looking.
Mallory had always had these sorts of pulls sometimes, and they usually led to an interesting discovery. Once, they found a very complete skeleton of a T-Rex, among others.
Mallory checked her watch. It could show the date as well as the time. The date said “June 29th, 2076”.
She looked over at the oldest of their expedition, who was 70 years old. Because of today’s technologies, he looked no older than 50. She wondered how the world was like when he was born, in the year 2006. How primitive, she thought, their technologies must have been.
A man came up to her. He was sweating and aching from such a long day in the sun.
“We need to give up, Mallory. The others are tired. They want to go home, see their families, and have some time away from this burning heat.”
“Tell them just one more day. I still feel there is something here.”
Then, after a thought, Mallory said “And also tell them I will be away for a little while.”
“Okay.” said the man, uncertain. “But I don’t think they’ll like it.”
And he left.
Mallory went off. Her pulling feeling was suddenly telling her that this was not the place too look, but she was close. She walked to the left, and allowed the pulling to guide her.
She went on, until she came to a forest.
“This is odd.” she said to herself. “A forest in the middle of a desert.”
She went in though, for her pulling feeling was telling her to do so.
She feared she might get lost at first, but that worry was soon gone, for she found that the forest was rather small and easy to get out of.
Deeper into the forest she went, until she came to the largest bush she had ever seen. It was so large that it was taller than she was.
She put a hand out and pushed the leaves aside, going right forward.
And when she stopped, she was amazed.
Right in the center of the forest was a sort of laboratory. It was a smallish black building, with all sorts of wires coming out of it.
On a closer look, she found that it was very rusty and beaten down.
“Looks like nobody’s here.” she said to herself.
She went forward, and found a steel door. She pushed against it, and was surprised and happy to find it flung forward easily.
In she went. The laboratory was only one room, with a single dim light to light the room.
She took out a flashlight from her tool belt, and turned it on.
She looked left, and found a table nearby. She walked over to it to see that it was covered with papers.
She turned her flashlight towards the papers, and read what was on them.
It was an elaborate document. It showed many pictures of strange creatures that she could not recognized. However, at second look, she recognized them with a gasp. They were the creatures in the once popular computer game Creatures. It had been popular before she was born, but her parents had told her a lot about it, and shown her a few pictures.
The creatures were diagrams, with arrows pointing to them at certain places, like in a technical document, or a document that described how to assemble a table or remote control car.
She moved her flashlight to find that there was a small, red book. She opened it to find it was a diary, written in wobbly English, with some of it not written in English at all. She opened it at a random page and read this:
=
Naturally, Mallory could not understand much of this. She turned to a much later entry. This is what it said:
Today I created a new breed. It is a geat, and I still have not figured out what to call them….
Then she went to another entry:
My poor norns are getting rather hungry. I keep telling them that carrots, cheese, and the like will soon be given to them. However, they still complain. I do wonder why my new geat breed eats so much. They are so cute, such cute little babies. But they have grown large, and their appetite larger, and the whole cycle continues.
Then she went to the last entry:
I write this under my desk. The geat breed I created so many years ago has become a monster greater than even a grendel. Most of my norns, ettins, and grendels died at the hands of this creature. The rest I have drowned, hoping to save their genetics. I hope
And it stopped, with a pen line dragging down from “hope”. Mallory realized that whoever had written this diary must have been killed right then. She closed the diary, and then noticed something written on the front. It said:
&
She could not understand what this said. However, when she looked at the back, it said:
Jema
The Female Shee
Mallory gasped. The Shee were the fictional race that was said to have created the norns, ettins, and grendels and geats. They could not be real. Or could they?
Mallory realized that poor Jema had killed to protect, and was killed in the process. But then she looked again, and realized what it had said. “The rest I have drowned, hoping to save their genetics” The rest I have drowned, hoping to save their genetics.
Mallory turned around to find a giant pool in the center of the lab. She moved her flashlight slowly over the water.
She found what she was looking for.
Dozens of norns, ettins, grendels, grenorns, grettins, nettins, and geats floated eerily in the water. Every single breed that had ever been dreamt up was there, from the vicious banshee grendels, to the docile banana norns, to C2 ettins, even a Gaia, among dozens of others.
Mallory yelled, set in a marker, and ran out to tell the others.

Chapter 2
It was quiet in the lab. Nobody seemed to be in the corridors.
This was about a year later. The creatures that had been found in the pool were examined and then some were placed in museums.
However, scientists got a new idea. Cloning had been perfected, and they wondered if they could possibly clone the creatures back.
So now, in this lab, all was quiet.
All, that is, except one room.
There were ten scientists crowded around a table. They were muttering, with the whir of machines coming around them.
One of them suddenly came up to a machine just next to the table, and pressed a few buttons.
Instantly, the machine sprung to life. It made all sorts of noises, beeps, and other things.
It seemed to glow red hot. It shook and sputtered.
Finally, a door at the bottom of it opened, and out rolled…
An egg.
The machine said “Genes successfully injected” and turned off.
The scientists muttered again, and looked at the egg.
It sat there. It was a light blue, speckled green, and large.
The scientists leaned in a bit closer.
Suddenly, they heard a cracking. There seemed to be a shape moving inside the egg.
The egg cracked, and the scientists stood back, ready for anything.
The egg suddenly burst, and out came…
A Pippin Norn Female.
The little baby looked around with wide eyes, then said “Flib Dat!” and pointed at a scientist.
The scientists cheered. From what everything looked like, the baby was perfectly normal.
“Fellow Scientists.” said one man as he came to the front “Today is truly a great day. We have managed to clone back a species once lost to earth. And in the process, we have taken the once popular creatures game and truly brought it to life.”
The news was at the front page of every newspaper, printed in all languages. The headline ran “Creatures Cloned! Video Game Brought to Life!”
The scientists used their technology to bring back more and more norn breeds. Soon, every norn breed that had been found in that pool were now alive and well in the world. And so scientists began on ettins, and sold the rights to sell norns in pet stores and shelters.
The first norn sold was the first norn ever. Little Abigal, the pippin norn, was now a child. It had been three years. Three whole years since the day she was born. And now here she was, sold off to a rich family.
With each norn that was sold, the family was given a norn care guide. When the pool had been discovered, the papers that Jema the Shee had created were saved. Some of the papers were found to have a complete norn care guide, one in English, one in Sheeish. The documents were used to decipher the Shee language, and the English version was copied and sold to every adopting family.
Abigal had a full vocabulary now. She arrived in a crate at the doorstep of her new family’s house.
She heard the door open, and felt the box being lifted up. She squealed with delight as she readied herself to explore the house.
The box opened and she was released into the mansion. She jumped around, looking up at the high ceiling, and down at the painting on the floor, and left and right at the expensive objects that resided there.
She ran around the house, careful not to break anything, lest her owners get made at her.
It was then that she ran smack into something furry.
She fell on her bottom, and shook her head to figure out what she had run into.
She found another norn standing there.
This was a Bruin norn male, a child too. He shook his head, and tried to uncross his eyes.
Abigal heard footsteps behind her, and looked to find a human standing there. She was used to the sight of humans, having been around them all her life in the lab.
This human was a female, made up most lavishly. She had brown hair, high heels, a black dress, and the brightest lipstick Abigal had ever seen.
“Ah, there you are, you little norns!”
She took both their hands, and led them away.
“Come now, you must met your new housemates.”
Abigal looked to her left to see that the bruin norn was terrified for some reason. She looked forward to find that they had been led into the sitting room.
Abigal and the bruin norn were picked up and sat on the couch. They looked around to see three other humans in the room.
“This is my husband, George.” said the lady, pointing to a black haired man with sleek hair, “My son, Jason.” she pointed to a boy with sleek brown hair “And Justina, my daughter.” she waved her hand over to a red haired girl in the corner.
The way she introduced her daughter was quite different from the way she introduced her husband and son. She introduced Justina quite quickly, like she was not that important. Perhaps it was because of her unique hair. Maybe this family prided brown and black?
At this thought, Abigal shuddered. She knew the bruin would be all right. He was brown from his nose to his toes. But Abigal had green hair, and was light green with dark green stripes. What if they didn’t like her?
“George, Jason, and Justina, these are our new norns, Abigal and Kyle. It took a good amount of money to get Abigal, because she was the first norn!”
At this, George and Jason applauded and praised the lady. Justina remained quite, and looked at the norns.
“As for me, my name is Lima.” she said, turning once again to the norns. “We hope you enjoy your life with us.”
And with that, she took the norns down from the couch, then bent down and said to them
“We are going to be having a party tonight. Please be on your best behavior.”
And with that, she walked out of the room, with her husband and son following.
The daughter looked at the norns, and they in turn looked at her. The staring contest went on for a little while, then the daughter got up and left the room.
Abigal looked around. From what she could see, she had the whole house to explore. She began to go out of the sitting room, when she realized that the bruin norn named Kyle was still standing there.
She turned around, and asked, “Why are you still standing there, when you have the whole house to explore?”
Kyle shook a little, then answered in a small voice “I don’t really want to explore.”
“Why are you so timid? There is nothing to fear here.”
Kyle trembled, then said, “I just… don’t trust humans that much.”
“Why not? They give you food, love, and a place to live.”
“That is the side of humans you have seen.” said Kyle. “I have always seen the other side, the side that thrusts you in a cage, starves you for a week, and then when you beg for food, they punish you. I have seen death, anger, hate, and cruelty…”
“STOP IT! STOP IT!” screamed Abigal “I DON’T WANT TO HEAR YOUR LIES! STOP IT!”
And she ran out of the room, crying.

Chapter 3
Evening came, and the party came. The lady came to the norns, brushed them off, and made them look as clean as possible. Then she sat them on the couch.
“The guests will be arriving soon.” she told them. “Please look your best.”
And she went out of the room to get the guests.
Abigal sat as straight as possible, not wanting to disappoint her owner. Kyle did nothing, but Abigal said nothing. She had not talked to him since he had told her those lies.
“Lies, lies.” she thought “Those were just lies.”
The guests came in. Each was holding a dish full of food, which they placed on a long table in the other room.
The guests came in the sitting room, and squealed with delight over the two norns sitting there.
“Dinner will begin at 6:00” said the lady.
Abigal’s stomach growled. She realized that she had not eaten all day. She looked at the clock. It was 5:00.
Abigal groaned silently. She had been taught the concept of time well, and knew that 5:00 meant that it would be a whole hour before dinner would begin.
She smelled the air, and her face lit up when she smelled the rich smells of pumpkin pie, apple pie, ham, roast duck, and all sorts of pleasant foods.
She looked over at the door that led to the room. She was ever so hungry, and the food smelled so good. She wished she could just eat all the food in the room.
She looked at the guests. Nobody seemed to be looking at her or Kyle anymore. They were chatting amongst themselves, happily engaged in the sort of conversations rich people had.
She looked at the door again. Would it matter if she sneaked in and ate some food? Just enough to keep herself happy until dinner arrived?
She looked at the guests again. Nobody was watching her.
She looked at the door, then made her decision.
Quietly, she slid off the couch, careful not to disturb Kyle, who was now asleep. She was now on the floor, and she tiptoed silently to the door, creeping carefully.
She was at the door. She looked back at the guests. Nobody had noticed her.
She slipped in the door, and quietly ran to the food.
It was then that she heard a small noise, and looked behind her to see that Kyle had followed her.
“What are you doing?” she hissed in a whisper.
“I may ask you the same question.” said Kyle.
“I’m only getting enough food to sustain me for a while, at least until dinner begins!”
She hoisted herself up on the table, and Kyle did likewise.
Before them both was a sea of food, smelling delicious. It seemed to call to both the norns “Eat Me. Eat Me. Eat Me…”
The norns, both rather weak with hunger, obeyed what the food called out. They each ate a pie piece, a ham slice, a turkey leg, and a bit of apple pie. They continued to eat, not knowing that their absence had been noticed.
They did not, and never could have heard the footsteps behind the door. Nor did they see the enraged face of their master, looking at the norns gorging themselves.
They suddenly felt a strong grasp seize them on their necks. Abigal cried out in pain as she was hoisted in the air. The woman was screaming angrily, in words they had not been taught in the lab.
However, they began to understand her a bit.
“Filthy creatures! Disgusting!”
The next thing they knew, they were being flung into a metal shed.
The shed door was slammed shut, and all was plunged into darkness.
“Kyle?” said Abigal.
“What?”
“What happened? We were just eating food, and then….”
“Dya see?” asked Kyle darkly. “I was right after all, wasn’t I? Humans aren’t all nice little scientists eager to serve your every need.”
What happened over the next few days was truly horrific. Everyday, they were given one small meal of whatever was left over. Every evening, they were brought out to be whipped, punishment for what they did that night. If they even cried in the presence of the humans, the whip would crack harder. Abigal went to sleep hungry and sad. She now knew that what Kyle had said was true. Humans had two sides, and now here she was, facing the worse one.
Why had the lab people not told her about this side of humans? Why? What had stopped them?
These questions often circled around in her head every day. Why did they not tell her that humans could love and hate, can both feed and starve a creature, could both tickle and slap?
She trembled every day, shook every day, and each day she grew more distrustful of humans.
Yet she still had some slight trust in them. Maybe they weren’t all so bad. Maybe, like with norns, some were good, some were bad, and most were in between.
Then came the day that changed everything about the way she saw the world, humans, and everything she knew.

Those people are so cruel! Those poor little Norns only wanted a little snack, and they get thrown into a shed and whipped ! You depict really well how cruel humans can be in this story. I hope the Norns are let out of the shed soon! |

Oh, they will. But unfortunatly, it's going to just get a little harder for these poor norns. No worries though, they'll turn out alright.
Gosh, I wrote that chapter years ago. XD Expect a slight shift in writing style as this progresses.
