I was jsut wondering.. What do you people think about rats as pets? (not wild rats, Wild rats are different)

( Mods you can shorten this is you think it's too long )

I used to keep mice, which are less intelligent... One of my friends has a couple of rats, both female. my advice would be to make sure that the petshop keeps them in sex-segregated cages, and to get a female - they smell less.

I had two female rats. they were alright. they were given to me as a birthday present.

the only thing is, rats tend to have very frail health. They're extremely prone to cancer (the theory is that laboratories breed rats for cancer research and give the extra babies to pet stores, so many of the ones available for purchase are naturally predisposed to cancer). Indeed, one of my rats died from cancer. Actually it got so bad that i had to have her put to sleep.

They're also prone to myco. That's a bacteria that lives in their lungs that usually doesn't bother them. but as soon as something is out of balance and their immune system is compromised slightly, the bacteria can take over and the rats can come down with pneumonia. My second rat died of myco-induced pneumonia.

its sad. because rats are so common, people think that they're hard to kill and are naturally healthy and stuff and that is just not true. they just reproduce fast.

that said, i loved my rats and miss them every time i pass by the rat tank at the pet store. But I prolly wouldn't get them again. too much heartache.

and they're very attention-demanding. yes you can train them, i guess. i never did. they pee on everything. and the sharp nails irritate skin like hell.

but what i always thought was cool - when you wet them down to give them a bath or whatever, their hair tends to naturally smell like artificial grape.

Yes, I'm the forum [devil]... Any questions?

One of which is the kid of my frist rattie. :3 rat's are very attenion demanding, that is true... I have two boys and one girl.. and 8 babies that were not wanted, my dad decided to put the boys and teh girls in the same cage one day when i wasn't home >>;

Rats. . . Are the most underrated and best of all rodent pets . . Period. That's my thought. I've had many rats in my pet-related life . . Loved and miss them all. I think rats are exceptionally intelligent, very beautiful, and . . Poo on mice! They're overrated, never smell as nice, always breed, bite soo much more, and.. Ech.

The first rat I had was a silver hooded, named Kiran. The last was a threesome of sisters from a lovely mother named Wilamena. The sisters were all different colors, one even being a curly coated.. love curly coated rats. They were Fermosa, Kyramina, and Memyro. After that, I had to and still have to live with only "feeder" rats that come and go.. I hate it, but our pythons have to eat something . . .

-Karias; a bit fruity and gone bananas in the wrong climate! :D

My best friend in kindergarten had pet rats; that's my only experience with them, but they seemed nice enough. My mum hates rats, though, and would have never let us adopt one (let alone a pair) growing up.

You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.
