I'd like to ask for some advice - what do you do when you're trying to think of a character, trying to make one up so to speak, and you just can't suss them out? Thanks for any tips or techniques.

I start drawing until i think the character i draw is acceptable. I also start making a profile for it.

What's the character for?
If it's for a story, I'd go with Julia's advice: draw until you think "THAT's what my character should look like!" Then you think about it's basic character, like it's allegiance (Good, Evil, Neutral), temperament (does it have a short fuse or long?), and powers (if it has any, like fire breath, acid spit, intangeability, etc.).
Then you can get on to the more complicated (and possibly optional?) details, like where it came from, where does it live, why is it in the allegiance it is, etc.
If it's a character for a Roll Play, or if you aren't comfortable with the advice above, then I'd think of the character as *itself* before thinking about it's appearance. Usually, inpiration just comes when it's ready and then, when the basic details are covered, you eventually come up with it's appearance (and then you're all set! )
I wish you luck!

Well, one thing I always find cool, is to create a name, and use one of those "Name meaning" sites, whilst mixing in smaller traits from other characters you've heard of.
Not really active around these parts anymore. |

Yeah, find a cool name, and think of a character to fit it.
For example, I have an anthro dragon character named Viara. You know it's a cool name.
ps. I haven't played Monster Raannnrrrnnchhdoggy |

This was a really stupid thing for me to do, because now I'm having trouble with certain characters for completely different reasons, but when I was stuck on making a personality for one person in my story, I borrowed bits from a similar character and used them as a base for this one's personality.
Unfortunately, my brain's kind of kept the connection going and now I'm having trouble untangling the two characters. >_< I'm working on it, though. Maybe you'll have better luck than I did.
Also, it may sound silly, but take one of those personality quizzes as the character you're trying to create. I was surprised by how much I honestly didn't know about my own characters, even simple details like their favorite color and their birthday. Most of it is just trivial detail, but every little bit helps, IMO.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

Try writing up character sheets, listing everything from full name, gender, etc to silly little things like favourite colours, animals and likes/dislikes. If you want to have lots of fun while doing this, make a Powerpoint
I just did that today with my DIMENSION characters. |

Wow, thanks everyone! I wasn't sure how much of a response this would get... I'm a bit embarrassed by my character.
Most of my trouble is that she's trying to turn out "gothic"/"emo" - she feels guilty about something she did in a past life, and she's striving to redeem herself (to herself, as she's already been forgiven by those she'd wronged). I don't like writing stuff like that - it feels gratuitous and icky.

Nearly all my characters are gloomy, angry or emo-ish |

I realize this is a mildly old topic, but...
I believe the best stories are those in which your characters can grow, so it helps if you have a plot in mind to build a character around, or vice-versa. In other words, I outline the character's main weaknesses and then build up from there. A character that is blind or deeply afraid of becoming injured in a swordfight is a much more interesting character than a self-insertion! |

I have a book on this.. but i lost it. I'll type up all i remeber form it. This is for story / book charecters though.
If he was stuck on an island, what two objects would she bring with him? (Gender switching becuase they may be ethier gender)
Is she intoverted or extroverted?
What would he do on his day off?
What does she value the most, the least?
Does she have the body of a woman who had 6 kids, or the body of an olympic swimmer?
What does his bedroom look like if she could have anything in it?
Does she have rough skin, or the skin of a pampered man?
What do they fear the most, what experiance caused them to have this fear?
What kind of family does she come form, A poor family, An avusive family, a pampered family, etc.
What are their traditions?

That's all i remember, really. Everyone's commeants should help ya. :3

When I want to create a new character, I usually create the basics, such as species and name. Then I think about them for a little while, letting them grow in my mind.
It's how I made my KC11 char. When I first made her, she was nothing more than a sort of avatar. But over time, as she sat in my mind, I began to create a past and a personality for her. And so she is a more developed character.
