I've *always* been homeschooled, but this year, since we've moved, I'm going to go to public school ( ) for the first time in my entire life!! I'm not sure how I should act (or not act) there, and I'm going into 8th grade. Could you guys please help me figure out what to do and not do? Please? Anything would be helpful! |

I live in the UK, and I'm not sure how different school culture is in the US so I don't really have much advice.
Though, on how you should act, I know this sounds so cliched, but really, just act like yourself. I'm sure people will love you for who you are, but if they don't (which I doubt,) they aren't worth impressing anyway.
You'll be fine and after the first few days it'll all feel natural |

There seems to be a lot of home schooled people here. What’s your school life and daily routine like? I’ve always wondered how that differs from someone who attends public school.
Think of starting public school as a new, character-building experience that will reap many rewards, both socially and academically. If you can, try not to be too timid about being around your new classmates and making friends, instead introduce yourself and try to find some common ground with people. That's always good for breaking the ice. From my own experience at school, I found it was better for me in the long run, rather than just keeping myself to myself. It made me seem more approachable to people.
And anyway, I’m sure there’ll be some people in your class who’ll be eager to come up and talk to you and show you around the school. Like Evilmoo said, I think you’ll be absolutely fine; it’s natural to feel nervous at first.
I hope this helps! I'm never quite sure if my advice about these kind of things is ever any good. |

I'm homeschooled too, LadyMarava, and it can be a tough transition between Public School and Home School. I was in a public school until 3rd grade, when I became a Home Schooler.
OK, first, stay calm. Don't be too nervous and try to make friends with some people. Like Evilmoo said, just be yourself. That's the best way to make friends.
It may take a while to get used to things; you'll need to adjust to new school sceduals, remember your locker code, etc. But, in the long run, I'm sure you'll do just fine... and you might want to watch Ned's Declassified School Surival Guide often. Even though it's technically a comedy entertainment, it gives good advice for people going into public middle school and things about it.
I'm sure you'll do fine.

I've got nothing. All I can say is-stay out of trouble, and avoid doing anything that you'll later regret.

I agree with the others. I Also recomend the Ned Declasified School Survival Guide it is helpful and good. I am not experienced in making school friends.

Suck up to the teachers, try to make friends, and try not to get caught in the hallways with an iPod. 'S all I've got.

Remember to smile. When you smile, you become much easier to approach and to talk to.
Be nice to people. Try not to make enemies. Unless you like drama. Ah, but you wouldn't know yet, would you? Woo, I'm excited for ya.
Good luck! |
