I've been inspired to start this thread because I've just bought a YoYo and when I was at school YoYo's were, for a while, a very popular toy
I don't know how much fads have changed but:
What fads can you remember from school?
What crazes are currently gripping you and your classmates?
What crazes would you like to see become popular?
Also, any personal obsessions you have, that might not be popular with anyone else, come here and mention them, we'd love to hear
YoYo's
MASSIVELY popular for about a year. All focus was on who had the best YoYo, who could do the flashiest tricks e.t.c. I remember being immensely proud when I acheieved 'Walking the dog.'
Pokemon Cards
Possibly the biggest fad of the 90's. Especially in our school. They had to ban them. It got to breaking point when one boy broke another boy's back just so he could take his cards They threatened anyone who bought them in with permenant expulsion and gave teachers permission to search our bags. It got to the point that it was so forbidden that there was a sort of 'Black Market' of pokemon trade going on secretly at lunchtime. I loved Pokemon cards. I could never played the game, but I loved the gloss and smell of the cards.
Stringy things
Okay. I can't remember the name, but a couple of years ago there was this toy that sudennly became popular. I remember being really proud because I bought one about three months before anybody had even heard of them. They were a jellied sting with a ball on the end and the ball was full of liquid. They got banned because SO many people died playing with them. People got strangled e.t.c. That fad didn't last long because they stopped manufacturing them very quickly and the remaining ones broke very easily too.

Pokemon Cards
Oh, the glory. At my old school, I had the fattest deck, and was famous for having a whopping three ancient mews. Nowadays I just stare in awe at the thrid graders on my bus' cards and try to barter.
Tag
By far the biggest fad ever at my old school. We had two teams; girls and boys. Boys met on the basketball court, and girls met on a blacktop on the side of a hill with a map of the US on it. The leader sat on Texas, and everone else sat on the other states. For a long time, I was deputy and sat on Hawaii. I was eventually promted to leader, but quit to join...
Crazy Bones
Crazy Bones, or GoGos, were a huge hit at my old school, and are begining to pop back up again at my new school. They're little plastic dudes about 3/4" tall. Basicly, they were pokemon cards that can physically attack. A common game was to bowl with them; line up a bunch and flick one (usually your favorite) at the line. If you're interested, some FiveBelow stores have some. I still have a heaping pile of them, in a black drawsting bag in the depths of my closet.
Littlest Pet Shop
This really began to blossom in 5th grade. Everyone brought in their rarest and bragged. I, having 140, was practially a god. It's died down now, but I still collect them.

It'd be interesting to hear about the different playground crazes in other countries, like America and Australia. Every craze ended up getting banned at the schools I went to. To name the most significant ones:
Pokemon Cards
We had these at my secondary school too, they were at their most popular when I was in my first year. As I went up the school they got less and less popular (well, Pokemon just became 'uncool' didn't it? ). I remember most kids going around the school with their cards, either you had them neatly presented in ring binder, or you had them bundled together with an elastic band and stuffed in your pocket. I was one of those kids, sporting a yellow ring binder and a meager collection of cards, I could never collect many. I wasn't collecting them to aid my game however, I just wanted to "catch 'em all"! And it was really exciting to buy a new box of Pokemon cards, because it meant that there might be a rare "shiny" card in there. We all went mad over the sought after "shiny" cards, often trying to rip others off in attempt to get better cards, like you'd try so hard to exchange a Pikachu card for a Charizard "shiny" card, trying to persuade your classmate why this would be a good swap. I remember being involved in a big argument once over a Jigglypuff card, we all wanted it!
Tamagotchis
The Tamagotchi craze happened whilst I was starting middle school. When these first came out in the shops, you couldn't get one for love or money. In order to get one you had to go to a store and put yourself on a waiting list, it was that bad. The idea of being responsible for and looking after a collection of pixel on a screen was so exciting back then, especially if you didn't have any pets at home. In the end, I got the 'Nano Baby' and later on my friend Holly gave me her GigaPet Chimp, on long-term loan. (In fact, Mum still plays with my Nano Baby ) They were eventually banned from my school because people brought them into the classroom and they kept beeping and disrupting the lessons.
Furbies
I was in my last year of middle school during the Furby craze. Like the Tamagotchis, when the original Furbies came out (not like the new, re-modelled ones they have now) you just couldn't find one on the shelves. The idea interacting and looking after something had captured everyone's imagination again - it was a must have! I remember seeing people queuing outside of Woolworths, when they had a new delivery. I eventually got a Furby of my own. I've forgotten its name but it had grey fur speckled with black spots, and pink hair to match a pink belly. I loved to make it communicate with Furbies - I thought that it was fascinating! I think that was the main reason I wanted one really. I could never teach it any words though, which disappointed me hugely. However, I wasn't smitten with the Furby for long - one night it really annoyed me by waking me up, so I threw it out of my bedroom window and it broke. I wasn't allowed another one.
Yoyos
Same case as Evilmoo's really. I remember mine was a red 'Yomega' - people either had a Yomega or a 'Proyo'. It seemed the more tricks you could do, the more impressive you were to other people. If you could do "Around the World" you were royalty. I sucked though, I couldn't do any tricks at all. I could only manage to "sleep" my yoyo. |

I was obsessed with furbies. My first one was brown with black and white specks and I played with it so much it eventually broke. I got a furby baby too which had a bubblegum pink mohawk. It's still here somewhere but Mum hid it a while back.
I was obsessed with Tamagotchis also. I once had one that lived for a hundred days and I was SO proud.
They've TRIED to reinvent all these toys but nothing will ever beat the originals. |

At my summer school the three things really hitting the roof of popularity are...
Boy
Girl
Gender Neutral
Pokemon: _____ Rescue Team was a real hit for the boys at school. They were so busy playing the blue and red versions of the game that the principal literally outlawed it as a game in the hallway.
All three versions of Nintendogs drove the girls nuts! You should've seen them... they were so busy interacting with their virtual pups that some of them missed class. The principal is growing red with fury as the teachers are starting to complain of giggling girls and barking dogs outside their classrooms. Thankfully, I don't have a Nintendogs anymore and I'm not sucked into it.
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl is smashing for both girls and boys as they battle their Pokemon against eachother. This must be more popular than both the Pokemon Rescue Teams and Nintendogs because the students are carefully playing them outside and are trying to keep the volume down when they skip class. They aren't taking any chances with these new games!

Well, for a while there were like, flying dolls... I forget what they were called properly.. dolls with launchers and wing-shaped arms? You'd pull a string on the launcher and the doll would fly off for a short distance. Does anyone else remember this, or know the proper name?

When I was a little kid, it was both Pokemon and Digimon cards everyone was obsessed with. Then at my primary school in NZ it was Yu-Gi-Oh cards. Then it was marbles.
I've always loved marbles, not to play with but because they're so shiny an colourful :3
Now I'm at college, we don't get obsessed with toys. What most of is obsessed with now is either Gerard Way or Pete Wentz |

I am still in school and I never had the pokemon card fad in my school.
Ramen!
At my fifth grade everyday at snack time we brought in ramen. We ate diffrent flavors. Chicken was the most popuar. It got out of control when the Beggers (People who beg for some ramen) accidently weren't careful with the ramen. I was a begger but I didn't make a mess. The day I brought my own ramen it was outlawed temporarily in class. Sadly enough ramen is considered junk food! In AZ which I ive in the junk food is outlawed in Elementry, Middle, High, College schools.

I used to love Sky Dancers. They were relatively cheap for a fad so I had quite a few. They were great fun. |

Nice Danny icon, Drac! Wait... YOU'RE IN COLLEGE??? I thought you were 14!
Furbies were never really a phase at any of my schools, but I'm still obsessed and love all of mine dearly. I have a long dead black and white furby with grey eyes, an all-pink one with brown eyes, a limited edition purple one with the standard blue eyes, and a red and grey one with silver eyes. The latter two were obtained on eBay.
I have a good five Tamas, and, often, I don't get caught with them in class.
I have a Yugioh deck thicker than my waist... Shall I sell it on eBay?
