It might be worth noting that we don't have to reinvent the wheel to get Creatures moving again. There is much to be said for simply updating the engine and sticking with 2D. There are many features that could be implemented to freshen the series. Rotatable sprites, Lighting, Anti-aliasing, Zooming, Proper Transparency, Scaling Sprites, Reintroducing [proper] World Wrapping, New CAs, object classifications, so on and so forth...

And we have a gigantic springboard from which to accomplish this already, which even already has some of these features: OpenC2e

We just need some proper programmers with the skills, ambition, and drive to do it. After that it's simply a matter of picking up where projects and ideas like Edynn, Creatures Orbis, Lifandi, and Freetures left off.

Personally, I'd much rather have Creatures remain in 2d, with updated features like the ones Moe suggests.

Don't forget the sensors for things like temperature, sound, time of day, season etc that were left as unusable remnants in the creature's biology. There is still much to be improved without needing to change up everything.

That sounds good too, I was thinking of 2.5D or this type of 3D that looks 2D but by being 3D is actually easyer to animate and to use particles, realtime lighting, fog and effects and stuff, but yeah this should be discussed with everyone interested(also I heard some of those things are nowadays possible in 2D?).

We should make a list of people who want to join and who want to join on..certain terms I suppose? I mean I guess there's people here who's love to help with 2D but not 3D.

I think 2.5D would suit the creatures series much better than fulll-blown 3D.

I think you can work with planes in 3d and then do uv-animation. I think it's called that. Double Fine used the technique with their point and click game, Broken age. Tossing it into the discussion as a suggestion, nothing more. But it made me think of that when Rha mentioned easy to animate. Then it'll be 3D, but it will look more 2D in style. (Depending on artstyles)

Has anyone given any thought about what the UI should be like?

Edit: Added in a ( )

I actually didn't mention the 2.5D before because I guess I kinda assumed everyone had that in their mind xD like Creatures Online.

UV animation means you animate a texture, I don't really understand how you think that will work on the whole game, can you please explain? Broken age looks full 2D, with 2.5D I meant making the 3D models and such but make the LOOK 2D, like Battlechasers
Here's their website so you can see some gameplay and maybe someone here would like to back them ; ) (I just really dig the style, even if it is not my type of game)

If you'd all prefer full 2D Spriter and Sprite Lamp look really great(they'e both on steam).

I think I should add you guys on steam, maybe that way we can talk about this easier. I believe I have added Doringo before, I'm NarRhaTuyok or RhaT, I'm not sure which one shows up.

Broken age is 3D, they are working with planes and animating the texture on them while moving the planes around. Which is what I thought you meant with maintaining the 2D look while still being in 3D to make some things easier. Or at least that's what I gathered when I looked on the development-videos back in the backer-days of the game. They were working in Maya for the game and manipulating planes and their textures.
Battlechasers look really interesting in their artstyle too! Are they full-on 3d-models?

I'm jcnorn on steam :)

Ah, no I meant actual 3D models that are textured in such a way, and the camera used in such a way that they look 2D. Fez is another example of this.

I don't feel like it's the 'true' definition of 2.5D tho, which to me is and always will be those games that tried to be 3D in the early 90's but were 2D sprites that do some weird and crappy billboarding effect haha. I love them tho they're precious (old shooters like DOOM, wolfenstein and Marathon)

Sims was that as well if I remember correctly :D

2.5D to me is when 3d-models are used but you only see from one angle. Like an endless run game seen from the side. Or a platformer. Like the Super Mario games, that you see from the side, but everything in the game is built out of 3D-models.

Interesting, and definitely something worthy of discussion!

That's the modern definition of it but I think it can be used for both, it's just that what I said pops up first in my mind when I hear 2.5D.

I wonder, with modern day technology how something like that would look. Imitating full 3D with 2D sprites, nowadays you don't notice billboards moving, and the usage of uv animation like you mentioned before could be interesting.

I just love how this game looks. Only the environment (corridors, rooms) are true 3D, like in DOOM. It takes about 50 seconds to start tho, the beginning in the cave is from a different game (I don't know why but they had to include it to make it work on modern pc's? It's strange.)

Edit: I'm just mentioning Marathon because I love it and in no way think we should try and make such a thing, just got a bit off topic.

Edit 2: Yo, adding some videos here of things I 'programmed' in UE4, a year ago.

A floating orb following the player.

Here it followed very linearly.

First person view, it also has some random delay so it doesn't follow as if it's stuck to you

A short game we had to make for class, I worked with 2 others on this but basically most things are mine except some props and blueprints but I had to adapt them at some point so I know how to make them. Back then the widgets were still very wonky, just look at that awkward text floating off-center xD It should work perfectly now tho.

I was so proud of it back then but wow it looks bad haha ;_;

Hi all. My first post here. Creatures 2 was the first PC game I bought back when I was 12. Would love to help out if I can. Got a computer science with games development degree I obtained 6 years ago. Not coded properly for a while but did recently start playing with Monogame (essentially what the XNA framework now is). Would love to help out if I can. I prefer C# but do know C++ too. Limited knowledge of Unity.
