Nah, I think the grendel thing is fully genetic. You will notice that it is by far not as complex as the ettin one. Grendels only pick up the eggs, really, and simply carry them around as a talisman.

Only the ettins are scripted. And if I recall right, the only scripted part about them is the very last bit of the cycle. Steal gadget, feel homesick, walk home, that is all genetic. The script part is there to force them drop the gadget again and to make them ignore gadgets inside Ettin Home.
Ettin Home is not only a smell as the grendel or norn home, but it is also a room type (like air, soil or saltwater) specifically introduced for the drop bit.

Ah... Since the ettin one was scripted, I figured the grendel one would be too. I did notice some genes for egg and gadget hoarding. I just thought they needed scripting to fully work.

I suppose the breed could go to the norn home to lay eggs and bring any eggs they find around the ship to the norn home (though that could lead to issues if they take eggs containing violent grendels) without any scripting, then.

There is a generic "I hold stuff" instinct, but isn't there a separate one specifically for eggs? The one which makes grendels love eggs even more? Like pregnancy makes them feel homesick, you might be able to make them homesick from holding eggs as well.

Lastly, you might try to give them some kind of additional behavior via neuroemitters and chemical reactions. "if you see creature egg, grab it, UNLESS norn home smell is really high around here, then drop instead".

I can not guarantee that any of this will work out, the last time I did genetics was ages ago. Standard creatures most likely are too stupid to deploy this strategy with more than mediocre results, but CFE of CFF might just be clever enough to figure out what their confusing little instincts want them to do.

There is a separate instinct specifically for getting eggs. Vanilla Grendels have an instinct to get creature eggs when they're bored (of course, one could switch this to another drive). Then, once they've gotten the egg, a stimulus gene decreases their boredom, but increases their comfort drive (homesickness). Then, another instinct tells them to come to the Grendel Home when homesick.

So far, I haven't found a gene relating to dropping the egg after it's picked up. My guess is that that happens when something else (like food) grabs the grendel's attention.

Tying the egg-fetching instinct to boredom would seem a bit odd for the Kai norns... Fear, maybe? It'd make sense that a scared norn would be more likely to move eggs to a safer (or at least more familiar) location.

Generally, giving them a strong instinct to approach home when homesick, a stronger instinct that eggs are good to pick up, reinforced with the corresponding drive reduction on the 'got creature egg' stimulus and also giving them a ton of homesickness in that stimulus, works to get them to want to take eggs home... Make the instinct and stimulus reduce boredom or something, at least boredom is used in jungle grendels to get this behavior... fear is an interesting option though, especially if you remove the normal tendency to get homesick when pregnant... this way if they are feeling safe, they just lay anywhere and leave the eggs around, but if threatened, they start wanting to move the eggs to a safe place.

To drop them, you can go to the stimulus gene for 'I have reached home' (that is, the peak of whichever smell you want your breed to call home), make sure it removes their homesickness, but in that stimulus gene, you can also add a strong tendency to want to drop everything they are holding, by setting the 'reaction' in the stimulus gene to 'drop all' and the 'intensity' to about halfway.

A decently working set of instincts and stimuli like this can be found in Gizmo Norns, and is included in Evo and Dark Banshee genomes (Evos lack the part that gives them any special attraction to eggs, but if one happens to pick an egg up, it will be compelled to take it home, and will drop it once it gets there... The Dark Banshee have a full set of egg-hoarding behaviors, though they don't get homesick when they are pregnant themselves, they just really like hoarding eggs...) As noted, Jungle Grendels have almost all of the behaviors except the part about dropping when they get the 'reached home' stimulus.

One more thing to remember about egg behavior (and this IS scripted) is that only Norn eggs actually emit 'Creature Egg' smell, so creatures will always note Norn eggs as more interesting, and will have an easier time finding them and navigating to them.
