A friend of mine that lives in Germany recently went to GC and I personally asked him to look for Creatures 4 while he was there.

Video #2 (Some kind of Creature editor)

Thanks so much for asking your friend to get some footage! It's still early to say, but I'm definitely liking what I'm seeing! Maybe it's a little less like the original Creatures, yet I think there are a lot of possibilities that this opens up. Only thing is that if there is a Creature editor, will that mean that "breeds" will not technically exist? Hopefully there will be some official information from Fishing Cactus/Bigben, but this is an excellent start. Thanks again for sharing!

I really hope that the look of the body is not the only thing editable. Changeing behaviour and reactions to chemicals is the way that makes the most interesting creatures, I think.
And the editor is looking a lot like Spore, so I really hope C4 will keep more of what it promises now than Spore did.

Thank you (and your friend!) for the footage, Hogsy!

I'm... not really keen on what I'm seeing so far. The Spore/Sims 3-esque sliders are a nice addition, but unless I can tweak body shape or hair or that sort of stuff it's not what I was hoping for. And the little gameplay I see doesn't look appealing to me; it basically looks like Catz/Dogz with thought bubbles.

Buuuut, it's only a few moments of footage from an incomplete game, so I'm still trying to keep an open mind.

You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

yeah i still want to be able to type and talk to them, not just a little food though buble for eem hungry for starch...
And yeah if we can do in-depth breed making in game, that would be amazing, as long as we get the genetics aspect...
this will either be wonderful or terrible, I'm just saying that now...
Also we need more videos.

I like the look of the Norns in motion, they're smaller compared to the game world than I expected, but that means they have lots of room to play.

The automatic carrot planter seen in the 1st video seems a bit too Creatures Village-esque though... I'm really hoping for actual plants and stuff.

The fur patterns seem neat, but I don't think Norns will be able to become anything that isn't norn-shaped. (No grendel crossbreeds, for example)
But I hope there will be things like height variations and stuff. That would be awesome.

EDIT: Oh! Did anyone see the chameleon in the 1st video, next to the garden? It moved in all 3 dimensions, so I bet norns can too. Awesome. There were also sparkly purple mushrooms in the second part of that video, though they seemed to be more like an item of sorts...

EDIT 2: There's also butterflies, and a flower growing between the planks. So much to see!

EDIT 3: I'm getting a very big "Creatures Village" vibe, but not in a bad way. Imagine CV as being a proper, polished game. While I'm not too optimistic about the amount of actual genetics and biochemistry and brains going on, I do think the game will be a good one.

Crossbreeding seems to be very unlikely, I'm afraid. The very fact that Norns are now 3D models suggest it. Perhaps if grendels and ettins are a contorted version of the Norn model, that might work.

D: D: D:
But maybe they are contorted versions, and the two parents blend together in a way..? So you wouldnt get a grendel with a norn head, you would get a creature in between the two? But then breeding is a problem as well, will interspecies breeding be possible???
AAAH this needs to be released like now.

Indeed thanks for the clips from your'e friend : D
Hopefuly there be more *prays*

Im going to stick to what I said on the ctopia, that I dunno what to make of the 2 clips I saw - theyre too short to let me judge XD

I still have my head spinn a bit from re-watch them a few times..

I only can say the ingame norns look much better from the c4 prew pic XD

Lets pray for the grendel and ettins return,eh? ;P

Im still curious if the norn editor thingy is a atempt on a crazy splicer..or a ingame genetic kit.
Just hope it's not like the petz paintbrush O.o' *never used it - whats the point to color a pet when the reason you picked it from the start was the color, the personality you fell for (if it comes in many furcoats, that is) O.o? *

also that with heights and weights are a thing listed on my C4 concept (It's in my scraps on DA)
I also hope for thin and chubbby ones too : D

I remember back at C3 - first pic I saw a fat civet norn eating a cheese - I realy belived "wow they get fat now by eating too" sadly,I didn't know it was a preg civet back then XD

I wonder,is the creatures going to be mute o.o I didn't hear a well known norn voice among the the human babble.. O.o

Yeah, after all the money we gave them, and the money they were given to take over the rights to Creatures, they really owe it to us to implement all the things from the previous Creatures games.
Especially if those things are unlikely to add anything to the game that would make it sell better on the general market. It's not like we want more people in the CC anyways.

I'm with AS.

They don't 'owe us' anything. They're not creating it for us, they've taken up the Creatures IP because they believe they can create a game that will perform well and be financially successful.

Honestly, I could live without Ettins and Grendels. I quite like the feel of the game so far, it's pretty much exactly what I expected, and I love how fluid the animation seems to be.

I am guessing that the creature movements are being handled by the Euphoria engine...it is cutting edge game tech and can do some awesome stuff. Fishing Cactus posted a blog about it.

I am impressed with what is there given the time scales involved for the developers. I saw a few bugs (norn dropping through the floor) but it still looked pretty robust.

I didn't see the fur implemented here, but it is pretty hard to see that detail.

For those worried about the grendels and ettins, I can say that it is perfectly possible to have a re-worked model for these species, and a morph value could be used to blend between the two shapes, though this would require a bit of a design change for the grendels...there is only so far you can push a mesh.

The norns look horribly adorable. It's still a work in progress, but I am hopeful in the direction it'll go. The norn customization really allows for easy updates of skins and models. My hope is that they really go all out on the ability to adjust your norn. From the looks of it there are only two models?

My hope is that we can develop our own skins. But my hopes for development beyond that are slim.

On another note I want the giant norn model on display.

Given that this is only a quick look at the demo, I really doubt we've seen a fair representation of all the features the game will have. They were probably only able to/only had time to put two models in the demo, but given that the option even exists it seems reasonable to assume there will be more.

MNB

MNB

  8/18/2011

Agreed Ghosthande, the two models is likely just because it's a demo. That's why I really have hopes for it to expand before release.

The 3D is like a hybrid of if you were to take C1 and throw it with CV and give it a nice Z axis.

So far they have my attention, as long as they don't make it a 10 hour game where after 10 hours you pretty much rinse and repeat; which was the problem I found with C3/DS (Norn hatches, teach it some vocab, send it to breed with other things, micro manage the ecosystem, and start all over again). WAY to much micromanagement occurred in C3, if something died your ecosystem will collapse or wasn't very maintained, and norns just have a lot of kiss-poppin time with one another. K strategist > r strategist. Was I the only one who enjoyed in C2 and C3 having to take a norn, teach it some vocab and forcing it to find the power-ups?!

It's an abomination that lacks the heart and soul of Creatures. They may have the name, and call their cats norns, but it is simply not Creatures.

You can take that to the papers and print it.

Merboy

  8/18/2011

I have to agree with Moe. It looks like a glorified tamagotchi. It looks adorable on its own but it doesn't seem like it's a follow up to the Creatures series. Obviously we don't know yet a lot of the details and it could have an array of wonderful features, but based on what we've seen so far it looks like it's taken a harsh left turn from the spirit of the games. The world is a cartoon and the items in it look so childish.

I'll be happy to say I'm wrong if it comes out and is actually amazing, but this doesn't look like our game. Like I said in chat, I feel like Fishing Cactus tapped our community to hype up the game for them. I completely understand where the rest of your guys are coming from and I guess it's still worth holding out hope (also I will definitely be playing this) but this isn't the Creatures 4 we all wanted. It's not even close.

So... the tomato thrower and punch gun in C2 weren't childish and silly in any way? :\ There has always been some childishness in Creatures, that was part of its charm. Except maybe C3/DS, but that was missing a lot of the heart of the earlier games.

But of course this isn't what "we all" wanted; I'm not sure why anyone thought that it could be. The "what do you want to see in Creatures 4" at Ctopia thread established one thing: everyone wants something different, and most of the things people wanted were pretty advanced/complicated features. For Creatures 4 to accomplish even a fifth of what the CC has been dreaming of for the past 10 years would be impossible.

Was there anyone who wanted a simple pet game for their phone, though?

There's a difference between there being a few "childish" items and the whole world looking like a rainbow-coloured flash game. (Although my main concern with how it looks is simply that it looks like exactly what I feared it would - an iPhone game.)

Re: Ettins and grendels. I bet they'll release them as buyable addons.

Not running to their defense here but beating on the image of a 'norn' here is slightly silly.

Compare these breeds:
C1 Ron Norns, C1 Forest Norns, to say... Chichi norns, or the Bruin Norns from C3/DS. The game's norns have changed over time. Seriously, forest norns have and will always remind me of clowns.
Did you SEE the CMobile turtle norns?! That was about as norn like as these guys and those came straight from Gameware. They were ugly, and didn't even have ears.

Docking Station and C3 had little soul, in fact the two games were dark and gloomy. Okay maybe they were out in space and it's dark and gloomy out there too. Come on add a splash of color here and there, as long as it doesn't look like a clown vomited all over the place.

Game play wise, none of us know so don't be quick to judge.

How are people making their judgements that this game is or isn't a creatures game based on these videos?
Have people somehow been able to play the game or get a look at the engine to see how things are working? As far as I can see you can only tell a few things from the demo:

1. There is a creature editor.
2. It's 3D.
3. There are agents.
4. This environment is bright and colourful.

We haven't seen any creature interaction. We haven't got any details on genetics. We haven't heard anythings about other metarooms etc. We haven't seen anything even remotely like a finished game...this is an Alpha version rushed together for GamesCom. And I think the work that we have seen has been pretty impressive.
If we wait and this game does turn out to be nothing like a creatures game, then it is resonable to moan and gripe. But the game isn't out yet, so it isn't possible to say if it is true to the spirit or not.

If you want this game to be what we want it to be, whining like a child about things that we don't know wont do it. Constructive and well thought out feedback is. If I were the game developer and saw that people thought the norns weren't quite norn-like, I would think about changing the design a bit.
If, however, I heard that someone thought the game was an abomination...well...what can you do with that?

Thank you, Hogsy and Hogsy's friend! I've just watched the footage, but I think I'll reserve my judgement until I've got the actual game on my computer. :) I did feel a few niggles from seeing how the environment and gameplay looked (I'm generally not a fan of 3D games), but then again, it's hard to know for sure how I really feel about the game until I've actually played it!

I will admit though, that despite my initial reservations about how the Norn looked, when I saw the Hand pick it up in the footage a distinct "Awwww..." did emerge from my lips. :P

I'm currently a bit disgusted by some of the CC's reaction, to be honest... A lot of people seem to have built up expectations that were extremely unlikely to begin with, and as soon as they see the teeniest amount of footage they starts spewing vitriol all over the place.

Creatures 4 was considered DEAD only a few months ago. DEAD. You can be disappointed that the game will be different from the other games, but actually throwing around insulting remarks about a game that will more than likely bring in some new fans and keep the series alive?

For shame...

However Creatures 4 turns out, it'll surely catch the attention of people (even if it is via a mobile app), and then once they've been drawn in, it's likely they'll discover the previous instalments and hype about those, and the community attached to them. ;) That will be very good for us! You only have to look at the response the GOG.com versions have already had to see that...

We have all had plenty of time to decide what our perfect Creatures 4 game will be like and to create an image of how it will look and play. Some people are going to be thrilled with this new C4 demo and screenshot, others are going to be disappointed, and some will be waiting for more information to decide. Don't forget that everyone is talking about how they actually feel about all the news, so there's no need to judge or criticise anyone else's opinions; all views are valid :)

Isn't it sad that I watched that and all I got from it was NORNDOLL! ?

Five stages and five races at the start of the game, but with options to add on...

Can pat and slap norn, can pick up norn, can mate norns and swap norns.

Coins seem like bioenergy?

Did he say that the boxset includes an updated version of 'the three previous chapters' (C3/DS?) to run on current platforms?

The coins seem like bioenergy in that you can use them to buy new toys, but you can also buy more coins online to speed the game up, but it's not required. so that's good. :)

I bet major addons will still cost money though, but who can blame them?

After seeing the gameplay I am somewhat impressed with what they have managed to create so far - when I initially saw the article saying creatures was going to be reborn and went over and had a peek at what fishing cactus previous games were like I was pretty worried that creatures was going to be turned into a downscaled iphone/ipad flash game with very limited graphic etc etc - The fact that its bright colourfull and 3d but still retaining the 2d slide scroller that we have been used to for the past 15 years is great! how else would you like it to look, any more 3d i.e top down would look alot like pets and spore and any more 2d would make the game look primitive giving that we are now in 2011 and technology has come so far - my opinion they have done the best they can to mix the two successfully.

Im glad that the norns look more norn likee than in the first image we we're provided with on the blog - maybe there can be some improvements but if the editor does allow us to change the size of eyes, nose etc then surely we can make the improvements ourselves, that would be pretty satisfactory.

I really hope that we are still provided with seed and baby critters to inject into our worlds and watch them grow, I think the creators owe it to the community to honour the previous options and let every interactable living thing in the world have its own life cycle - if they want to take on the creatures title then its only fair to keep it in line with previous versions and not take away too many things.

Hopefully each stage(metaroom, world) will be full of loads of places to explore and BIG.. one thing with creatures 3 I found that the whole ship was no where near big enough to explore..

The guys and fishing cactus have done a pretty good job at listening to what we want already - hopefully as the game progresses they will add more of our suggestions & at the end of the day they are trying to capture what is already a huge community & I dont think they want to loose out on a large market chunk if they create something that us veteran players are not going to like, and hey if it doesnt work out right, Im a digital artist and will be more than hapy to create all of the artwork to create a whole new world using the creatures3/ds engine.. just need coders :-)

@ malkin and aquashee -
so there finaly I got one of my question answered XD - so there wasn't a second currency you need to buy money but you can still get it ingame - online buy for real money is just a speed up..

but 5 races O.o?
I didn't hear that - hmm most be one of the thing I couldn't hear when the man was talking
(no offence to him - but I felt like he talked to fast XD )

I too kinda come to think of the coins as bioenergy sort of..
but still not sure XD

I also think DanCattDotCome is right. Not that I say the game right now may be shown creature-ish but that it is still not finished and it may have some of us fans influent in it when it's near the final (hopes at least ) .

Also that with the c4 ingame norns looking better compared to the first look of the pic when I said:

"I only can say the ingame norns look much better from the c4 prew pic XD"

also do I agree there must be a way that we can alter more then the fur colors, as I said in the other topics - it maybe will be a bit like how you change a sim - face will be easy altered - or at least with genetics - make a norn uniq in that all dosn't look like clones..

But stages make me a bit worried
(thinks of the gba and ps1 creatures games* O.o'

Im still also confussed about the interveiw clip - so far it make me think spin off then a actual c4,but hey Im not judging right away , just saying what I could get from the clip *is waiting til I know for sure whats going on XD *

Im not going to type all my questions here as I did on Ctopia - just make other peoples head spinn,it's enough with mine doing so alone ^^'
