Live Nornish Action Reboot! 1 | 2 | |

Hey guys, haven't poked around the CC a while. Long story short, real life got in the way (family drama, spontaneous cross-country moves, etc etc), and what with Grandroids (and now to a much lesser extent this new Creatures game that I'm not entirely sure I want to acknowledge the existence of yet) on the horizon, my drive to really delve deep into the inner workings of the game has waned a bit. But there has always been a special place in my heart for my old LNA stream, so over the past several months I've been quietly tweaking it little by little, and I've finally managed to rewrite the FAQ and pull a halfway decent site together so I figure it's time for a sort of official re-launch:

For those of you that weren't around/aren't aware, Live Nornish Action (or LNA) is a live, 24/7 (ideally) video stream of an online DS world. You can send your DS creatures to "LNA" and then watch them interact with others on screen.
It's not perfect; there are occasional crashes that I have to manually fix (such is the nature of DS) and several of the third party breeds have imperfect body data, but there are quite a few improvements over its last incarnation. For one, the creatures have nametags so you can easily see who's who (and who the creature belongs to) at a glance, and a status window at the top makes it easier to tell what's been going on. I'm still working to improve it on a daily basis, fixing the breed errors and bugs and trying to develop agents to allow people to remotely interact with the world a little more. But I've been at this for quite some time now, and I'm realizing that the more I fix and improve, the more I realize needs to be fixed and improved, and at this rate it will never be considered finished or perfect, but I think the stream is in an enjoyable enough state now to let you guys know about it.
I've set up a little twitter account that I'll use for mini-updates or announcements when the stream goes up or down, and if you have some feedback on the stream, there's a support page on the LNA site with links to a feedback form and a little survey. I'd be interested in hearing what you guys think <:
I don't have a whole lot of time to check forums and stuff these days, but I hope you guys at least get a kick out of what's been keeping me busy in the meantime.

This is like Big Brother, but Creatures-style (and probably more entertaining too). I watched a little of the stream this morning, and I happened to catch the Norns in the middle of a slap-fest, haha. I love the fact that you can submit your own Norns as well and join in the fun.
Great idea, Amaikokonut! |

Sam, all you need to do is send them through DS to LNA and they'll show up there :]
I'm glad LNA is back up, I only started wolfling runs two months ago so it's really cool to see all the crazy color mutations norns can get. |

All the norns are sick. I also notice it seems to primarily be DS. I think I saw the C3 Ark at some point. Are you running any other addons, or cutting them out for stability reasons? |

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback (and a huge thanks to Laura for both approving the news post and adding a link on CCaves <: )
Papriko-- as I found out after some paining, outputting pray files and using NET:MAKE works efficiently for sending data-- this is the same method DS uses to send mail, chat requests/messages and so on. I happily have the basic science down (and occasionally send some weird and random test messages to the LNA status window remotely, if anyone's seen them and wonders what the heck is going on, that's why!), it's just all the rest of the coding that's taking some time. Mostly because those projects keep getting sidelined in favor of higher priority fixes. But I'm getting to them, honest!
Jeckunev-- Glad you are enjoying the stream-- I have seen quite a few of your creatures hanging out in my world!
Moe-- The world is docked with the C3 ark; problem is just that all the warp norns arrive in the DS meso and tend to just... hang out there, since all they need for life is there! But I recently changed it so warp creatures are placed somewhere random in the world, so hopefully this will show off more of the C3 ark. Once I get some of the more critical scripts running perfectly I fully intend on making use of other addons and metarooms-- perhaps even inviting developers to use the stream to give a preview of their addons before actual release.
Mousienorn-- you've almost got it right! But it's "wrt+" not "wrtx". I hope that helps!
I've been doing a lot of active development on the stream-- so if you drop by and some weird stuff is going on, (we had some flying eggs earlier) do pardon the mess!

Haha yeah, I send out some norns from time to time to add more people to my contacts. Unfortunately there are a few times when there's nobody online except for you, and they all end up invading! So I do apologize for that.
What are your next big plans for LNA? I noticed that the random norn placement sometimes puts them in the aquatic metarooms and they end up drowning... oof! |

Amaikokonut

|
6/7/2011 | |
Yeah, the random placement isn't perfect-- it's not -supposed- to put them in water but it's hard to test if those checks are working properly. I'm still tweaking it though, so hopefully it shouldn't be an issue much longer, but do report any oddities you see since it is a little difficult to bugcheck randomness.
I think the next thing I'm going to work on is modifying the import script to only allow so many creatures into the world from one breeder at the same time. I hate to put limits on it, especially since the warp is dead most of the time and every creature can provide a spark of interest, but occasionally people flooding the warp with creatures do tend to take over the world, and it's a little unfair to people that are actually watching the channel when their creatures are automatically exported to make room for a flood. So there will be a limit set of four creatures per person in the world at a time-- once a creature dies or is exported you will be free to send another.
Hopefully soon after I'll find time/motivation to work on the agents to allow people to manage their creatures remotely-- get their creatures back if they need to and adopt naturally-born creatures. When that gets underway I will be looking for a few LNA regulars to help me out with testing, so keep an eye out for that <:

The random placement also puts a lot of creatures directly in large corridoor rooms where they will never have a chance to avoid Eat Elevator Syndrome However I don't see a way around this. |

|
6/10/2011 | |
A sending limit per breeder sounds like a good idea, I feel bad when all my norns end up being sent to LNA because nobody else is online I don't want to be kicking anybody else's creatures out of the world.
And yeah, I noticed some Eat Elevator Syndrome too, but I guess that can't be avoided. That's a problem with the game, not with LNA! XD |

Alright, so I finished up a draft of the limit script-- it should reject creatures sent in by people that already have four creatures in the world. But it's still in need of testing, so spam away and report your findings! <:
I've had a few people suggest that I add some food/toys to those big empty spaces to avoid EES, so I may look into something like that next.

This is but a minor nitpick, but I think it's about time you changed the pre-show title to something other than "Invasion of the superbreeding ettins." Right now, a better title would be "Live Grendelish Action" - Grendels are the ones dominating the stream at the moment, and there's absolutely no ettins to be seen.
I also suggest turning off the ingame music if you're just going to have MNGPlayer supply it. Having both playing at the same time just seems redundant.
Other than those two things, I've seen no major problems with the stream (and was lucky enough to see some development in progress last night - 'twas interesting to watch). I had an interesting plan for my contribution to the world, but since there's too many grendels running about now the stream is more in need of a shipment of hardmen. If I don't get distracted by Okami/Brawl this weekend, I'll see if I can get some in there.

Haha, both of those problems are actually things I'm fighting a bit with too -- the title thing is an unfortunate known problem with the site itself, even though it looks changed on my end, half the time it won't actually go through. And for some reason even though I turn the ingame music off, I find it on again later, even when it -says- it's off in the panel. They're both things I'm looking into, just not terribly high priority.
For those of you that haven't seen yet, I have added a new little status bar to the bottom that displays the selected creature's species, age, and highest drive. It's far from perfect, but I'm tweaking it a little at a time.
Something less noticeable I've added is a tiny script that occasionally drops food or a toy in front of creatures that have no food or toys around them. I haven't watched it long enough to see how effective it is, but hopefully it will deter EES a bit without completely killing a creature's desire to wander around. If you guys would let me know how it's working, I would appreciate it <:
Thanks for all the feedback so far guys! I really appreciate it.

Live Nornish Action is currently down, due to the DS Server not working. I imagine it should be up and running in the next few weeks, or so I hope! When the server is working, LNA is almost always working.

Just a bump to mention that, as of typing, the DS server is up for the first time in months! But LNA is rather dreary without all your creatures, so you guys are more than encouraged to send a creature or four!
I've made quite a few alterations, most of which are invisible but the script to randomly teleport creatures -should- be working a lot better now, and there's some scripts that will rescue creatures that end up in water. There's also been a lot of edits to stop some crashing problems and some just to make my side easier, hah.
Probably the most notable change is that creatures are now kept infertile after producing two offspring, in some attempt to stop the world from being overpopulated with eggs just because one superbreeder wanders in. This restriction will likely be changed later on whenever I get around to coding in automatic adoptions (possibly a creature will be able to breed again if their offspring are adopted), but right now it's just a quick fix because I'm sick of seeing the same-looking creatures and messes of eggs everywhere.
Here's to hoping the server stays up and I get to see a lot of your creatures soon! (And also hoping registrations will be fixed eventually so that new and long-lost community members can join in the fun too!)

I feel like I may have been able to get around the 4 creature per person limit by sending LNA some creatures that were sent to me.

Yes, that's possible. Although I don't know if it really counts - the 4 creature limit is meant to ensure variety. So if you send others' creatures, variety will still exist.
Another way is to send a multiply pregnant creature, but that's just mean. ![[devil] [devil]](/images/smilies/devil.gif) |

Amaikokonut

|
11/7/2011 | |
Yeah, the creature limit counts based on original breeder. That'll probably change when I get live adoptions up and running, but that won't be for a while (Until registrations open properly again, I feel like I'm putting a lot of work into nothing), but for now the goal is just to prevent people unknowingly spamming when they decide to share the entire contents of their superbreeder wolfling run with the whole two other people online XD
While we're here, is there anything you guys would like to see done differently on LNA? Anything you find annoying or anything you think would like to see included?

I echo what ylukyun and Malkin have suggested; I have my eye on SquirrelNorn's Norn, Tacky Hands. She's so pretty!
I also wouldn't mind seeing something implemented to stop imbreeding, if possible! Watching Apphia become pregnant by her son, Gifted Slope, made me cringe a little. Not that Classy Birds isn't cute...
Edit: I am SO sorry if Apphia has caused the LNA world to be overrun with Apple Norns! I think she likes keep her extreme friendliness in the family. |

It really bugs me how they get into loops. I like the ability both of C3DS creatures to suggest an action and to vocalize preference for one another, but it always seems to result in endless reiteration of the same thing if they are in large groups.
Any Norn neurologists here have a clue if it would be possible to at least turn down the looping without stopping the sentences altogether? |

ylukyun, I seem to recall the looping is partially scripted, at least with the 'Petal love River' 'River love Petal' etc. loops.
