| type | Toy | | author | Laura, Mea | | website | [view] | In the depths of the dark swamps, this ancient statue of a dragon has been found. Covered with moss and still dripping with water, what will your creatures think of this strange relic? Curiously, it snores... Gives thirsty and overheated creatures a small dose of water when pushed. Also included is a toxic swamp dragon for toxic breeds to enjoy!

Ummm.... I can clear this up with one sentence.
I AM Ahkalia from Dragon Cave, & yes I was the one that created the lagmonster for dragon cave during the St. Patric's day lagfest that killed so many dragons.
When the Lagmoster didn't make the cut for the new at that time qualifications for the sprites, I made this version known as the quagmonster so that at least a version of the lagmonster could maybe be on Dragon Caves. It was suppose to the ancestor of the lagmonster, it's original form before it became the cyborg-dragon that is the lagmonster. Once again, it got scrapped & it's creation thread was deleted without warning because it didn't match the at that time, latest update to what could or couldn't be submitted as possible dragon sprites for Dragon Cave. I didn't want the sprites to go to waste (like the rest of the sprites I tried to make for that site) so I decided to use them here.
I still have the sprites for the lagmonster as well. I hope this clears things up.

I tried too. The sprites don't line up. Based on my experiences with artists, they also tend to react badly to unproven accusations of visual plagiarism, therefore it's hugely unfair of you to storm in accusing them without solid proof.
Yes they look rather similar, I agree there, but there is no proof of copying and it is unfair of you to call the artist out in a public forum without having any. By all means find her contact information and hash it out with her, but this isn't right.

The pose is definitely similar but beyond that? I don't think there's any standing here. Dragon Cave has been around long enough to inspire artists and that's perfectly fine. The differences in arm structure, the way the chest curves into the rest of the body and how the dragon coils up should be sufficient to say that it wasn't traced as you seem to be claiming.

The pose is incredibly similar, but other than that, the sprites don't match up at all. Believe me, I tried.

It's not the concept that's the same, it's the actual underlying sprite. She may make her own, but in this case to me it looks very much like either a modified copy of the Lagmonster sprite or so heavily referenced from it as to make little difference. I don't mean to be rude, but the issue isn't the design, it's the actual art. Do an overlay and you'll see what I mean. No, it isn't identical to the last pixel, but it's close enough for me, personally, to be uncomfortable with it, based on my own experiences with artists in general and what they tend to react badly to. The original artist may well consider this art theft if they saw it. It's up to you guys what to do with it, if anything, but I felt I should at least make it known how the Lagmonster's artist would likely react if they knew about it. I am not however going to report it to them. *shrug* Do with the information what you all will.

When you check her blog you can see that she does a lot of own art and especially sprites.
The designs of the dragons are somewhat similar, but to me it seems like more of a coincidence.
And even IF it was inspired by that Lagmonster thing to some degree, the themes are completely changed (digital ghost kinda thing that causes website problems vs watery sea creature) and it looks different enough to pass. The poses are also similar, but definitely not the same.
Afterall, the concept of long thin dragons isn't really a new thing anyway.

It's possible that the Lagmonster strongly influenced mea's design. It's not my place to comment for her though, as I don't know how her creative process works.

The art from this was traced from the Lagmonster art from Dragon Cave... I hope they had permission to use it.
