"A nornchi called Bluegrass, many months ago," say Tazer. "He wrote for creatchis he hadn't met, and it got handed on to a grendelchi called Molly, who added to it; then it got passed on to one of her hatchlings, and so on. It has a lot of useful information in it. Worth reading, if you can." He looks at the sky, and smiles. "Well, time for me to be going. Take care of yourself, and give my love to my hatchlings if you meet them. And don't worry! I have plenty of friends where I'm going." Tazer grins and waves farewell, and wanders away through the trees. | |||||||||||||

Maika is still quite sad about learning that her best friend will die so soon, but she says "Okay. I'll try to find the letter." Then she pauses and asks, "Who wrote it?" | |||||||||||||

Another pause while Tazer checks and double-checks. "Haven't seen it since I was small... I learned to read from it... yes, here we go. Erevu's the only direct descendant of Hallon - he must have it. If he doesn't know what I'm talking about, he's looking for a carved wooden box - it's got some bark on it with his family history, and there's a letter in the box as well. As I understood it, the letter belongs to all creatchis, in a way... see if you can find it. If Erevu doesn't have it, look for the box in the caves where Hallon used to live." | |||||||||||||

"Surely not the first?" asks Tazer, surprised. "Well, most creatchis are approachable - some might have a bad reputation, but you don't have to let that influence you. But it's just a fact of life: creatchis move on. I was introduced to other creatchis as soon as I was out of the egg, and I was barely a day or two old when one of them died - I was so angry! Couldn't work out where they'd gone." He pauses for a moment, remembering. "You know, there's something in The Letter about that. - I wonder who still has it? Erevu, maybe?" | |||||||||||||

"You mean I won't be able to see you again?" Maika asks. "I don't want you to go! You're my friend! You showed me the graveyard! You told me about my parents! You're the very first Creatchi I ever met!" | |||||||||||||

"No," says Tazer, "all creatchis have an allotted span here - 24 days. No-one has ever stayed longer. I don't know where we go afterwards, but it must be good - no-one's ever come back. I've got less than a day left here. But I reckon there's something next. Some of the other creatchis did, too, before they left." | |||||||||||||

"I'll do my best to find your children. As well as learning with them, I will do my best to teach them all that I know. But, what do you mean you won't be here much longer? Are you going on a trip? You can come back and visit, right?" | |||||||||||||

"The Borg were an alien race, part machine - Seven of Nine hatched from an egg found on their space ship. Zetta IV hatched in the medical bay, and had a fascination for internal organs instead of gadgets - and didn't wait until people had done with them first; it's all here, if you know where to look..." He tails off, looking suddenly sad. "It's a shame we didn't meet sooner - I could've taught you to read, and then you could've found all this out for yourself. But I'm not going to be here for much longer." He sighs. "There may be a way. I'd always hoped to meet even one of my children, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen now. But one of them's guaranteed a good future, because Nutter will adopt them. Now, she always teaches her creatchis to read, whether they want to or not!" he laughs. "Will you find my children when they hatch, and tell them about me? And at least one of them will learn to read, and you can learn with them. Handish isn't the easiest thing to learn, but worth the effort." | |||||||||||||

Maika looks confused. "I don't really know who those people are. Why is it unusual to be raised by the Borg? Who or what is the Borg? Why would an internal organ not be safe around Zetta IV? Why was someone named Widget 001?" She continues with many questions, eager to find out who these amazing creatchis were. | |||||||||||||

"Fourth? Tenth, according to this!" Tazer grins. He jumps about from one record to another, getting in quite a state. "Do you realise, you're a descendant of some of the most famous ettinchis - Seven of Nine, raised by the Borg; Peaches; Widget 001 - all the way back to Zetta IV! People still tell stories about her, no internal organ was safe..." | |||||||||||||
